Apple sues Canadian company that stole its waste and sold it again where it remanufactured 100 thousand devices

Doha: Amid the trend of companies to remanufacture and use electronics, Apple inc. sued a Canadian company for stealing, recycling and selling nearly 100,000 iPhones and iPads from the U.S. company’s waste.

The story began when Apple contracted with the Canadian company GEEP to get rid of Apple’s remnants of damaged iPhones, iPads and Apple watches, and Apple supplied the company with technical waste from January 2015 to December 2017. As The Logic report indicates.

But Apple recently carried out an audit, discovering that there are at least 18% of those devices connected to the Internet via a SIM Card, which means that there are at least 100 thousand iPhones and iPads sold through the Canadian company, out of half a million iPads, iPhones and Apple Watches delivered by Apple to GEEP over two years.

Apple is seeking 31 million Canadian Dollars in damages, or nearly $22 million, for the devices, but the Canadian company denies any illegal practices, but says two of the company’s employees may have stolen the waste, according to The Logic report.

On the other hand, technology companies such as Apple rely on a fast product cycle by introducing new models of their phones every year, which means that used devices and their recycling will negatively affect the company’s profits.

But Apple and other technology companies are trying to introduce new solutions to this problem by offering phone disposal programs and replacing them for less money, and tech companies such as GEEP of Canada are helping Apple recover reusable valuables and precious metals.

For its part, Apple defends its position in the case, saying that it is not against the principle of recycling and the use of electronics, but the company believes that the repair and reuse of the company’s devices through non-specialists, may have negative effects on public safety, and devices may explode for example, which harms the image that Apple is trying to keep for its products as safe.

الدوحة: في خضم توجه الشركات لإعادة التصنيع واستخدام الإلكترونيات،  قامت شركة آبل الأمريكية بمقاضاة شركة كندية بسبب سرقة قرابة 100 ألف جهاز آيفون وآيباد من مُخلفات الشركة الأمريكية، وإعادة تصنيعها وبيعها.

بدأت القصة حين قامت شركة آبل بالتعاقد مع شركة GEEP الكندية؛ وذلك للتخلص من مُخلفات آبل من أجهزة آيفون وآيباد وساعات آبل المعطوبة، وقامت شركة آبل بإمداد الشركة بالمخلفات التقنية من يناير/كانون الثاني 2015 وحتي ديسمبر/كانون الأول 2017. كما يشير تقرير موقع The Logic.

ولكن شركة آبل قامت بإجراء تدقيق مؤخراً، لتكتشف أن هناك على الأقل 18% من تلك الأجهزة متصلة بالإنترنت عبر شريحة SIM Card، مما يعني أن هناك على الأقل 100 ألف جهاز آيفون وآيباد تم بيعها عبر الشركة الكندية، من أصل نصف مليون جهاز آيباد وآيفون وساعات آبل والتي سلَّمتها آبل لشركة GEEP على مدى عامين.

وتطالب شركة آبل بتعويضٍ قدره 31 مليون دولار كندي أو ما يقارب 22 مليون دولار أمريكي مقابل تلك الأجهزة، في المقابل تنفي الشركة الكندية أية ممارسات غير قانونية، لكنها تقول إنه ربما قام اثنان من الموظفين في الشركة بسرقة المخلفات، وفقاً لتقرير The Logic.

على الجانب الآخر تعتمد شركات التقنية مثل آبل، على دورة منتجات سريعة عبر طرح موديلات جديدة من هواتفها كل عام، مما يعني أن الأجهزة المستعملة وإعادة تصنيعها ستؤثران بشكل سلبي على أرباح الشركة.

ولكن تحاول آبل وغيرها من شركات التكنولوجيا تقديم حلول جديدة لهذه المشكلة عبر تقديم برامج التخلص من الهواتف واستبدالها مقابل مبلغٍ أقل من المال، وتقوم الشركات التقنية مثل شركة GEEP الكندية، بمساعدة آبل على استعادة القطع والمعادن الثمينة التي تصلح لإعادة الاستخدام.

من جهتها تدافع آبل عن موقفها في القضية، بأنها ليست ضد مبدأ إعادة التصنيع واستخدام الإلكترونيات، ولكن الشركة تظن أن إصلاح وإعادة استخدام أجهزة الشركة من خلال غير مختصِّين، ربما تكون لهما آثار سلبية على السلامة العامة، وقد تنفجر الأجهزة على سبيل المثال، مما يسيء إلى الصورة التي تحاول آبل الحفاظ عليها لمنتجاتها على أنها آمنة.
