Msheireb Properties to Launch “Gulf Sustainable Urbanism” Book

Doha: Msheireb Properties and Qatar Foundationare are set to launch the ‘Gulf Sustainable Urbanism’ Book, researched and written by Harvard University, during a virtual event to be held on Oct. 7.

Harvard University was commissioned by Msheireb Properties and Qatar Foundation to undertake a multi-year research study to establish a holistic framework documenting, analyzing and deciphering the principles of urban sustainability of selected case study cities in the region. The launch of the book will bring together experts and professors from Qatar and the wider region, in addition to professors from Harvard University and guests. A unique blended in-person and virtual event will be hosted by Msheireb Properties and held simultaneaously at Msheireb Museums and on a dedicated on-line virtual platform.

The launch event will be followed by on-line panel discussions on Oct. 14 and 21 (with two sessions each day) to discuss different topics related to ‘the historic environment, culture, and economy of the Gulf region’, ‘the development of urbanism, and public health of the Gulf region’, ‘the traditional neighborhoods and architecture of the Gulf region’, and a special session titled ‘The study of the past informs future sustainable urbanism in the Gulf.’

The Gulf Sustainable Urbanism book is available in an electronic version and a special print edition of 900 pages, with nearly 1,000 illustrations/analytical diagrams in high-quality graphics.

The GSU book results from more than nine years of research; it started in 2011, with the first phase completed in 2020. The study covers three periods: past, present, and the future. Harvard University has completed the first phase, “The Past,” and released the first part of the book, which covered eight countries and ten cities bordering the coastal zone of the Gulf.

الدوحة: تدشن مشيرب العقارية ومؤسسة قطر كتاب “الاستدامة العمرانية في الخليج” الذي أعدته كلية التصميم بجامعة هارفارد الأمريكية، وذلك في مؤتمر افتراضي خاص يعقد في 7 أكتوبر الجاري.

وقد أعدت جامعة هارفارد هذا البحث بالتعاون مع مشيرب العقارية ومؤسسة قطر بهدف إعداد مرجع توثيقي معمق لتأسيس إطار عمل شامل يوثق ويحلل مبادئ العمران المستدام لمدن مختارة في منطقة الخليج، ويأتي تدشين الكتاب في مؤتمر خاص يقام في متاحف مشيرب وعلى منصة افتراضية ليجمع باحثين وكتاب ومختصين من جامعة هارفارد ومن الدول التي شملتها الدراسة.

ويستكمل هذا التدشين بأربع حلقات نقاشية عبر الإنترنت تقام في 14 و21 أكتوبر الجاري وتتناول مواضيع متنوعة منها الوضع البيئي والثقافي والاقتصادي للمنطقة تاريخيا والتطور العمراني والصحة العامة، وكذلك الأحياء التقليدية الشائعة في هذه الدول والتصميم المعماري المتبع فيها، بالإضافة إلى جلسة خاصة حول أثر الدراسات عن الماضي في تحديد خيارات المستقبل.

ويعكس رعاية ودعم هذا الكتاب جهود مشيرب العقارية ومؤسسة قطر في دعم التطوير العمراني المستدام والمحافظة على البيئة من خلال تمويل البحث الميداني وبناء علاقات مهمة مع مؤسسات علمية وبحثية رائدة في العالم تتمثل بجامعة هارفارد، ودعم البحوث والدراسات التي تعود بالفائدة على قطر والمنطقة بشكل عام، كما يعد الكتاب مصدرا لمختلف المؤسسات التعليمية والجامعات والمكاتب والباحثين في مجال الاستدامة والتطور العمراني الحضري في المنطقة كما يشكل مرجعا لبناء السياسات المستقبلية المتعلقة بالاستدامة.

ويتوفر الكتاب بنسخة إلكترونية وأخرى مطبوعة مؤلفة من 900 صفحة مقسم على جزأين ويحتوي على أجزاء لكل بلد ومدينة محل الدراسة، ويحتوي الكتاب أيضا على أكثر من 1000 صورة ورسم توضيحي ورسم بياني بدقة عالية الجودة.

ويأتي الكتاب نتيجة عقد من الدراسة والبحث حيث بدأ في عام 2011 وأنجزت المرحلة الأولى منه في عام 2020، ويغطي الدراسة ثلاث مراحل زمنية: الماضي والحاضر والمستقبل، وقد أنجزت جامعة هارفارد الدراسة على المرحلة الزمنية الأولى “الماضي” وأصدرت الجزء الأول من الكتاب الشامل الذي غطى مرحلة “الماضي” وشمل 8 بلدان و10 مدن مختارة تقع في المنطقة الساحلية للخليج العربي.
