Doha: The world will celebrate Teachers’ Day with the theme “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future” on Thursday, Oct. 5, amid the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) celebrates this occasion annually since 1994, commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This Recommendation sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

World Teachers’ Day is co-convened in partnership with UNICEF, the International Labour Organization and Education International.

This day will be an opportunity to celebrate the teaching profession all over the world, conduct a comprehensive assessment of what has been achieved, and to draw attention to the teachers who represent the core of the efforts made towards achieving the global education goal of leaving no one behind. UNESCO estimates the need to recruit sixty-nine million teachers to achieve universal education by 2030.

The State of Qatar will participate in celebrating this occasion through a remote ceremony organized by the Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture and Science (QNCECS) in cooperation with the UNESCO Office in Doha, Qatar University, the College of the North Atlantic, and the UNESCO-affiliated schools.

The event will be inaugurated by a speech delivered by QNCECS Secretary-General Dr. Hamda Hassan Al Sulaiti, and a speech for the Director of UNESCO Office in Doha Dr. Anna Pollini.

Video clips will be displayed later for a number of teachers and educational leaders talking about their active role as teachers and leaders in the educational process, and about the measures taken with students during the coronavirus (COViD-19) crisis in partnership with the schools. In addition, students of UNESCO-affiliated schools will display videos to deliver speeches expressing their gratitude and appreciation for the efforts of their teachers.

On the sidelines of the event, an educational seminar will be organised on the concept of the World Teachers’ Day 2020 logo, in which a number of educational leaders will take part.

Qatar’s celebration of the World Teacher’s Day reflects the great observance of teaching profession and its appreciation for the teachers and the role they play in educating the generations. It also reflects Qatar’s loyalty to teachers and their hard and great effort, and its keenness that teachers occupy the position that befits them and their message, as the role of the teachers is not only teaching, but also teaching moral and values as a guide for their students.

Most countries in the world have temporarily closed their educational institutions to reduce the spread of the epidemic, affecting more than 60 percent of the world’s students.

UNESCO works to provide support to all countries to mitigate the immediate impact of school closures, especially the impact on the most vulnerable and disadvantaged groups and seeks to facilitate the continuity of education for all through distance learning.

The pandemic has increased the size of the difficulties experienced by the already stressed educational systems across the world, and there is no exaggeration in saying that the world stands at a crossroads, requiring more work than ever before, with teachers to protect the right to education and apply it in light of the new circumstances imposed by the pandemic.
