Qatar Olympic Committee submits bid to host Olympic and Paralympic Games from 2032 edition

QNA – Doha:

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) today announced it has formally submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) its request to join the non-committal “Continuous Dialogue” to host a future edition of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, as early as 2032. Qatar delivered the request via an official letter to the IOC’s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland

Commenting on the announcement, QOC President His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani said:

“Never before has an Olympic Games been held in the Middle East. The Olympic rings are a symbol of peace, unity and hope for people around the world, including the people of our region. Today’s announcement marks the beginning of a meaningful dialogue with the IOC’s Future Host Commission to explore our interest further and identify how the Olympic Games can support Qatar’s long-term development goals.

“For many years, sport has been a major contributor to our nation’s development. From athletics to cycling, gymnastics to football, tennis to volleyball, Qatar has earned the reputation of a world-class destination for major sporting events. It is this proven track-record and wealth of experience, along with our desire to use sport to promote peace and cultural exchange, that will form the basis of our discussions with the Commission.”

Over the last decade, Qatar has undergone a rapid transformation as part of National Vision 2030. Qatar has developed state-of-the-art sporting venues and transportation networks as part of its preparations to host the FIFA 2022 World Cup. Hosting a future edition of the Olympic and Paralympic Games would further accelerate Qatar’s human, economic, social, and environmental development.

As part of the IOC’s Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms, the IOC instituted a new approach to hosting future Olympic Games through the establishment of a permanent Future Host Commission. This approach is based on partnership, flexibility and sustainability, ensuring that future Games will fully align with the long-term development plans of host cities/regions and leave lasting legacies. These reforms have encouraged the Qatar Olympic Committee to express their interest in hosting future Olympic Games.

 أعلنت اللجنة الأولمبية القطرية اليوم، أنها تقدمت رسمياً بطلب إلى اللجنة الأولمبية الدولية للانضمام إلى “الحوار المتواصل” وغير الملزِم حول استضافة إحدى النسخ المقبلة من دورة الألعاب الأولمبية والبارالمبية اعتباراً من نسخة العام 2032، وسلمت دولة قطر طلبها عبر خطاب رسمي إلى المقر الرئيسي للجنة الأولمبية الدولية في مدينة لوزان السويسرية.

وتعليقاً على ذلك الإعلان، قال سعادة الشيخ جوعان بن حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني رئيس اللجنة الأولمبية القطرية: “لم يسبق لمنطقة الشرق الأوسط أن استضافت الألعاب الأولمبية من قبل، وترمز الحلقات الأولمبية إلى السلام والوحدة والأمل لجميع شعوب العالم بما في ذلك شعوب منطقتنا”.

وأضاف “أن إعلان اليوم، يعتبر الخطوة الأولى في حوار بناء مع اللجنة الدائمة المعنية باستضافة الدورات المقبلة التابعة للجنة الأولمبية الدولية، لطرح رؤيتنا حول الكيفية التي يمكن من خلالها للألعاب الأولمبية أن تدعم الأهداف التنموية طويلة المدى في دولة قطر”.

وتابع سعادته “للعديد من السنوات، تلعب الرياضة دوراً محورياً في تطور بلادنا، فقد حظيت دولة قطر بشهرة واسعة كوجهة رائدة لكبريات البطولات الرياضية في مختلف التخصصات من ألعاب القوى إلى الدراجات الهوائية والجمباز وكرة القدم والتنس والكرة الطائرة، ويشكل هذا الإرث الكبير والخبرات المتراكمة بالإضافة إلى سعينا الدؤوب للاستفادة من الرياضة كأداة لتعزيز السلام والتبادل الثقافي، الأساس لمناقشاتنا مع اللجنة”.

وشهدت دولة قطر على مدار العقد الماضي نقلة حضارية كبيرة في ظل رؤيتها الوطنية 2030 ، فقامت ببناء العديد من المرافق الرياضية الحديثة، بالإضافة إلى شبكة مواصلات عصرية في إطار استعداداتها لاستضافة بطولة كأس العالم لكرة القدم 2022، لذلك سيساهم الحصول على حق استضافة إحدى النسخ المقبلة من دورة الألعاب الأولمبية والبارالمبية في تسريع وتيرة التطور الذي تشهده البلاد في كافة النواحي البشرية منها والاقتصادية والاجتماعية والبيئية.

وفي إطار أجندتها الأولمبية للعام 2020، تبنت اللجنة الأولمبية الدولية توجهاً جديداً بشأن استضافة الدورات المقبلة من الألعاب الأولمبية، وذلك من خلال تأسيس لجنة دائمة لاستضافة الدورات المقبلة، ويقوم هذا التوجه على التعاون والمرونة والاستدامة ويؤكد على أن ترتبط الدورات المقبلة بصورة وثيقة بالخطط التنموية طويلة المدى للمدن والمناطق المضيفة، وعلى أن تترك إرثاً دائماً لتلك المدن، وقد شجعت هذه الآليات اللجنة الأولمبية القطرية على الإعلان عن رغبتها في استضافة إحدى الدورات الأولمبية المقبلة.
