The United States has officially designated Qatar as a member of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), making it the first Gulf country to enter the program. The VWP allows for easier travel between the U.S. and Qatar while enhancing security through comprehensive information sharing.
Qatar’s Achievement
Qatar has successfully met the stringent security and counterterrorism requirements needed for VWP membership. As a result, Qatari citizens and nationals will soon be able to travel to the U.S. for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa, using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). This move is expected to boost trade, tourism, and diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Increased Security Cooperation
Secretary Mayorkas emphasized the importance of the Visa Waiver Program as a tool for strengthening U.S. security. Qatar’s involvement ensures increased collaboration and information sharing in one of the world’s busiest travel hubs. “Qatar has been an exceptional partner for the United States,” said Mayorkas. “Their commitment to meeting these high standards reinforces the strategic relationship between our countries.”
Benefits for Both Nations
The VWP will offer easier travel for U.S. citizens visiting Qatar. Starting October 1, 2024, Americans can stay in Qatar for up to 90 days, an extension from the previous 30-day limit. Qatar’s entry into the program reflects its ongoing efforts to enhance national security and develop international relations.
Citizens of Qatar can expect to apply for ESTA authorization starting no later than December 1, 2024. For travelers holding valid B-1/B-2 visas, these will remain valid for U.S. travel. The Visa Waiver Program’s rigorous requirements mean that participating countries are reviewed biennially to ensure continued compliance.
Qatar now joins 41 other countries in the program, strengthening its global diplomatic ties and facilitating smoother travel for its citizens.
