QF’s Earthna Joins the Global Mangrove Alliance

Collaboration coincides with World Mangrove Day 2024 and connects Qatar to international network of experts and organizations committed to preserving and revitalizing mangrove ecosystems.
Doha, Qatar, July 24, 2024: In support of efforts to protect and enhance Qatar’s mangroves, Earthna Center for a Sustainable Future (Earthna), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF), has joined international conservation coalition, the Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA). The membership will enable Earthna to collaborate with other organizations who collectively strive to advance mangrove conservation initiatives, share expertise and resources, and collaborate on projects that preserve these vital coastal ecosystems worldwide.
Earthna’s membership of the GMA coincides with the upcoming World Mangrove Day (WMD), which will take place on 26 July 2024. Celebrated annually, WMD was established by UNESCO in 2015 to highlight the critical importance of mangrove ecosystems and promote their sustainable management and conservation.
On the importance of Earthna joining GMA, Dr Gonzalo Castro de la Mata, Executive Director of Earthna, said: “Mangrove forests play an incredible role in advancing global sustainability and the fight against climate change. They absorb high-levels of carbon, buffer against the impacts of climate change like storm surges and sea level rise, support biodiversity, improve water quality, and prevent coastal erosion. By working closely with the Global Mangroves Alliance and its partners, Earthna will leverage collective expertise and resources to help safeguard these critical coastal habitats here in Qatar, and worldwide.”
The GMA unites technical experts, civil society organizations, governments, local communities, businesses, funding agencies, and foundations to accelerate coordinated global action to conserve and restore mangroves, with an aim to expand the global mangrove habitat by 20 percent by 2030. The alliance includes leading international organizations such as Conservation International, The International Union for the Conservation of Nature, The Nature Conservancy, Wetlands International and World Wildlife Fund, among many others.
Earthna’s membership of the Global Mangrove Alliance, and involvement in local restoration projects, highlights its ongoing efforts towards sustainability and reinforces its commitment to creating lasting environmental solutions.

الدوحة، قطر24 يوليو،: أعلن “إرثنا: مركز لمستقبل مستدام”، عضو مؤسسة قطر، انضمامه للتحالف العالمي للمانغروف، وذلك في إطار جهوده الرامية إلى حماية غابات المانغروف في دولة قطر.
وتتيح هذه العضوية لمركز إرثنا التعاون مع مجموعة رائدة من المؤسسات الدولية المعنية بدعم المبادرات البيئية حول العالم، عبر تبادل الخبرات والموارد، والمشاركة في مشروعات عالمية تهدف إلى الحفاظ على النظام البيئي الفريد لغابات المانغروف، التي تؤدي دوراً بالغ الأهمية في حماية المجتمعات الساحلية.
ويأتي انضمام مركز إرثنا للتحالف بالتزامن مع اليوم العالمي للمانغروف الذي يوافق 26 يوليو من كل عام. ويسلط هذا اليوم، الذي أطلقته منظمة اليونسكو عام 2015، الضوء على الأهمية البالغة لأشجار المانغروف وضرورة الحفاظ عليها والعناية بها باستمرار.
وفي هذا السياق، أشارك الدكتور جونزالو كاسترو دي لا ماتا، المدير التنفيذي لمركز إرثنا، إلى أهمية غابات المانغروف قائلاً: “تؤدي غابات المانغروف دورًا جوهريًا في تعزيز الاستدامة حول العالم والتصدي للتغير المناخي؛ نظراً لامتصاصها كميات هائلة من غاز ثاني أكسيد الكربون، ومكافحتها لآثار التغير المناخي كالعواصف الشديدة وارتفاع مستويات البحر، فضلاً عن دورها في تعزيز التنوع الحيوي، وتحسين جودة المياه، والحفاظ على الشواطئ من التآكل”.
وأضاف: “إن انضمام مركز إرثنا إلى التحالف العالمي للمانغروف والعمل مع أعضاء التحالف عن كثب سيعزز الاستفادة من الخبرات والموارد المشتركة لحماية بيئات المانغروف الساحلية بالغة الأهمية في دولة قطر والعالم”.
ويجمع التحالف العالمي لغابات المانغروف تحت مظلته خبراء فنيين ومنظمات من المجتمع المدني وحكومات ومجتمعات محلية وشركات ووكالات تمويل ومؤسسات، تعمل جميعها على تسريع وتوحيد الجهود العالمية المشتركة للحفاظ على غابات المانغروف واستعادتها.
ويهدف التحالف إلى زيادة غابات المانغروف حول العالم بنسبة 20 في المائة بحلول عام 2030. ويضم التحالف العديد من المنظمات الدولية الرائدة، من بينها “المؤسسة الدولية للحفاظ على الطبيعة”، و”الاتحاد الدولي لحفظ الطبيعة”، ومؤسسة “الحفاظ على الطبيعة”، و”المؤسسة الدولية للأراضي الرطبة، و”الصندوق العالمي للطبيعة”.
يُشار إلى إن انضمام مركز إرثنا للتحالف العالمي للمانغروف ومشاركته في مشروعات إحياء غابات المانغروف في قطر تسلط الضوء على الجهود الحالية التي يبذلها المركز في دعم الاستدامة وتؤكد التزامه بالتوصل لحلول دائمة للمشكلات البيئية.
