QatarEnergy Unveils Plans for Groundbreaking QR1 Billion Salt Plant in Um Al Houl

QatarEnergy has revealed its intention to construct a state-of-the-art salt production facility in the Um Al Houl region of Qatar. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving Mesaieed Petrochemical Holding Company (MPHC), Qatar Industrial Manufacturing Co. (QIMC), and other key partners. As an integral component of QatarEnergy’s TAWTEEN localization program, the forthcoming plant is anticipated to require an investment of approximately QR1 billion.
The primary objective of this venture is to bolster Qatar’s self-reliance by catering to the domestic demand for both industrial and table salts, while also facilitating their export to regional and international markets.
Moreover, the facility will manufacture industrial salts essential for the petrochemical sector, alongside bromine, potassium chloride, and demineralized water. This diversification of products is expected to foster economic growth and promote the principles of the circular economy.
In his statement regarding the announcement, H E Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs and the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, emphasized the project’s significance in advancing industrial localization and sustainable practices within Qatar’s energy landscape. He underscored that this initiative embodies Qatar’s commitment to innovation and economic prosperity, in alignment with the National Vision 2030.
Furthermore, H E Al Kaabi highlighted QatarEnergy’s endorsement of the project through its TAWTEEN program, which aims to enhance local industrial capabilities and foster environmental sustainability. By converting waste into a valuable resource, the initiative sets a precedent for industrial efficiency and economic resilience. This endeavor represents a pivotal stride in QatarEnergy’s overarching strategy to fortify local supply chains and bolster industrial self-sufficiency.
The project’s innovation extends to its utilization of reject water recovery from reverse osmosis (RO) desalination units, thereby repurposing reject water from desalination processes into a valuable asset.
With an annual production capacity of one million tons, the project is poised to augment Qatar’s economy and industrial landscape by reducing dependence on imported raw materials. Currently, Qatar imports approximately 850,000 tons of table and industrial salts annually. As part of the TAWTEEN program, the project stands to benefit from initiatives aimed at enhancing local content and nurturing the growth of indigenous industries.
This collaborative endeavor exemplifies a robust public-private partnership aimed at realizing strategic national objectives. To date, TAWTEEN has allocated 78 investment opportunities out of its stated goal of 100, aimed at fostering the localization of services and industries within Qatar’s energy sector.
Since its inception in 2019, TAWTEEN has generated 7,000 white-collar jobs, further underscoring its role in driving economic growth and employment opportunities within the country.

وأضاف سعادته أن قطر للطاقة تؤيد هذا المشروع من خلال برنامج TAWTEEN الخاص بها ، الذي يهدف إلى تعزيز القدرات الصناعية المحلية وتعزيز الاستدامة البيئية. من خلال تحويل النفايات إلى مورد قيم ، تُعد هذه المبادرة مثالًا للكفاءة الصناعية والمرونة الاقتصادية.
