Commercial Outlets Must Offer Electronic Payments: MoCI Regulation

Commercial outlets failing to offer electronic payment options to customers face temporary closure, lasting up to 14 days, according to a recent report by “The Peninsula” on April 17, 2024. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) mandates all businesses to provide electronic payment services without additional charges.

During a Qatar TV interview, a MoCI official stated that failure to comply could lead to a 14-day closure or until rectification. This requirement, in line with Decision No. 70 of 2022, aims to streamline cashless transactions, reducing risks associated with cash handling, such as counterfeiting and theft.

Outlets must offer various electronic payment methods, including bank cards, payment wallets, and QR codes. MoCI issued a circular urging businesses not to impose extra fees for card transactions.

Qatar’s efforts to enhance electronic payment infrastructure include initiatives by the Qatar Central Bank (QCB) to develop advanced financial transfer systems, aligning with global trends.

يجب على المحلات توفير طرق دفع إلكترونية متعددة، بما في ذلك بطاقات البنوك ومحافظ الدفع ورموز الاستجابة السريعة (QR). أصدرت وزارة التجارة والصناعة دائرة تطالب الشركات بعدم فرض رسوم إضافية على المعاملات بالبطاقات.
