Doha: In a significant initiative aimed at fostering environmental consciousness, Qatar University (QU), through its College of Arts and Sciences, organized a pivotal event on National Environment Day 2024.
With the theme “Together to Protect Qatar Rodhat,” the event took place at the prestigious Congress Center, Expo Doha, and drew notable figures.

The event served as a platform to underscore the critical role of Qatar’s Rodhat in maintaining ecological balance and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.

Dr. Fatima Al Khayat, assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, stated that the university’s annual celebration of National Environment Day each year reaffirms the College’s commitment to national priorities in the field of environment and sustainability. She added that the College of Science and Science at QU supports such events that directly engage community members of all ages by inviting experts in the field to enrich the audience with their experiences, as well as activities aimed at spreading environmental knowledge and culture and instilling them in the community.

She explained that the college focuses each year on a specific environmental theme, and this year the focus was on preserving the rodhat due to its vital role in Qatar’s desert life, particularly during periods of rainfall.

Prof. Mohammed Al Ghouti, Acting Head of the Biological and Environmental Department Sciences at QU, highlighted the significance of preserving the country’s green spaces, emphasizing their vital contributions to air purification, biodiversity, and overall environmental sustainability.

In his speech, Dr. Mohammed Al Ghouti, Head of the Biological and Environmental Sciences Department at QU, said, “I am pleased to celebrate with you today on the National Environment Day on an important topic, which is the subject of Qatar’s Rodhat and their biodiversity, and how to make them a sustainable environment. Qatar has given great importance to environmental issues and their conservation, making them a key focus of the Qatar 2030 vision. Greenhouse projects and the rehabilitation of environmental systems are among its priorities and strategies as a leading step towards a sustainable Qatari environment.” He added, “Qatar’s Rodhat are essential components in the country, forming wonderful green spaces that contribute to air purification and improve the quality of life. They provide an environment rich in biodiversity, serving as a habitat for many plant and animal species. They are one of the most productive green ecosystems after the winter rains.” Prof. Al Ghouti outlined the challenges facing Qatar’s Rodhat, including urbanization-induced reduction in Rodhat areas, overgrazing causing soil erosion, and pollution endangering both the environment and human health. Prof. Al Ghouti emphasized the need for collective action and unity to address these challenges, urging individuals and institutions to play their part in safeguarding Qatar’s natural heritage.

“To ensure the sustainability of Qatar’s Rodhat, we must implement strategic plans, promote scientific research, and involve the community in conservation efforts. Events like these play a pivotal role in enhancing environmental awareness and fostering a collective commitment to preserving our precious green spaces and Rodhat in Qatar,” Prof. Al-Ghouti declared.

The event featured educational activities, where university students engaged in activities facilitated by QUs Center for Sustainable Development (CSD), QUs Agricultural Research Station (ARS), and QU Students’ Environmental and Sustainability Club. These initiatives included educational competitions on animals and plants conducted by students from the Biological and Environmental Sciences Department. Additionally, the Biology Education Association, a chapter of the QU Alumni, emphasized the importance of education in spreading environmental awareness and achieving sustainable development. This was demonstrated by different educational activities and their modern educational strategies, which provided students with the opportunity to sense the importance of environmental protection.

It is worth mentioning that the event showed a symbolic commitment ceremony where all participants pledged to protect and preserve plants in the desert environment. This collective commitment underscored the shared responsibility of individuals and institutions in ensuring the long-term sustainability of Qatar’s Rodhat.

الدوحة: احتفلت جامعة قطر بيوم البيئة الوطني 2024، في مركز المؤتمرات بالمعرض الدولي للبستنة إكسبو 2023 الدوحة، تحت شعار معا للمحافظة على روض قطر، بحضور مسؤولين من الجامعة، وممثلين عن الوزارات والجهات المعنية، وعدد من الطلبة والمهتمين.

وتأتي هذه الفعالية، التي نظمتها كلية الآداب والعلوم، بهدف نشر الوعي بين أفراد المجتمع حول أهمية المحافظة على البيئة القطرية واستدامتها، وأهمية المحافظة على روض قطر وتنوعها الحيوي، وكيفية جعلها بيئة مستدامة.

وقالت الدكتورة فاطمة الخياط العميد المساعد لقطاع العلوم والعلوم التطبيقية بالكلية، إن احتفال الجامعة السنوي بيوم البيئة الوطني في كل عام، إنما هو تأكيد على اهتمام قطاع العلوم والعلوم التطبيقية بالأولويات الوطنية في مجال البيئة والاستدامة، مضيفة أن قطاع العلوم والعلوم التطبيقية بجامعة قطر يدعم مثل هذه الفعاليات التي تخاطب أفراد المجتمع مباشرة باختلاف أعمارهم من خلال دعوة المختصين في هذا المجال لإثراء الحضور بخبراتهم، فضلا عن الأنشطة التي تهدف إلى نشر المعرفة والثقافة البيئية وغرسها في أبناء المجتمع.

وأوضحت تركيز الكلية كل عام على محور بيئي معين، وتم هذا العام اختيار المحافظة على الروض لما لها من دور حيوي في الحياة الصحراوية في دولة قطر والتي تدب فيها الحياة مع هطول أمطار الخير على البلاد.

بدوره، أكد الدكتور محمد الغوطي رئيس قسم العلوم البيولوجية والبيئية بجامعة قطر، أهمية الاحتفال بيوم البيئة القطري، مشيرا إلى اهتمام دولة قطر بالبيئة والمحافظة عليها، حيث تجلى هذا الاهتمام في جعلها واحدة من الركائز الأربع لرؤية قطر الوطنية 2030، كما تعد مشاريع الاستنبات وإعادة تأهيل الأنظمة البيئية من ضمن أولوياتها واستراتيجياتها كخطوة رائدة نحو بيئة قطرية مستدامة.

وحول تركيز احتفال الجامعة على الروض، أبرز الغوطي أن الروض تعد من أهم المكونات الطبيعية في دولة قطر، فهي تشكل مساحات خضراء رائعة تساهم في تنقية الهواء وتحسن من جودة الحياة، وتوفر بيئة غنية بالتنوع البيولوجي، فهي موطن للعديد من أنواع النباتات والحيوانات، وتعد واحدة من أكثر النظم البيئية الخضراء إنتاجية بعد هطول الأمطار في فصل الشتاء، مشددا على أهمية الخطط الاستراتيجية لحمايتها والتوعية بأهميتها والحفاظ عليها وتشجيع البحث العلمي في مجالها، بالإضافة لإشراك المجتمع في جهود حمايتها.

كما بين أن مثل هذه الفعاليات تساهم في زيادة الوعي البيئي، وبخاصة العمل على تأهيل الروض والمحافظة عليها، معتبرا أن حمايتها مسؤولية الجميع، أفرادا ومؤسسات، الأمر الذي يتطلب عملا وتكاتفا لتحقيق ذلك.

من جانبه، تطرق الدكتور هايل الواوي، خبير نباتات برية وطبية في وزارة البيئة والتغير المناخي، في عرضه إلى أهم النباتات البرية في روض قطر، وطرق المحافظة عليها واستدامتها.
