Seven Doha Film Institute Supported Films Make Global Splash at 74th Berlin International Film Festival

Doha: Highlighting the global impact of films supported by the Doha Film Institute, seven DFI Grantees have been selected to screen in key programming sections of the 74th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) including the official in competition.

Regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals showcasing the best of art house cinema, this year’s representation of DFI-supported films is another testament to the Institute’s success in nurturing independent voices in cinema from the Arab world and beyond.

Among the films selected this year, two are in the Competition section the centrepiece of the Berlinale that features only 20 exclusive titles from all across the world. Three films will screen in the Panorama section of extraordinary international cinema to the festival’s largest jury. One film will be screening in Encounters, a platform for daring and innovative independent filmmakers, and one in Generation, the section that illustrates the many complexities of youth.

Through our various initiatives, we continue to support compelling voices and powerful stories that have the potential to shape world cinema.” Films in Competition: Who Do I Belong To (Tunisia, Canada, France, Qatar) by Meryam Joobeur, is about a Tunisian mother gifted with prophetic dreams who lives in a rural farm with her husband Brahim and three sons. Their lives are completely changed after the departure of their eldest sons to the violent embrace of war.

Shambhala (Nepal, France, Norway, Hong Kong, Turkey, Taiwan, USA, Qatar) is a feature narrative by Min Bahadur Bham. Set under the Himalayas in the highest human settlement, about three brothers one of whom departs for trade. This weaves an unbreakable bond between the two others, transcending their roles in a tale of intertwined fates.

Films in Panorama: Brief History of a Family (China, Denmark, France, Qatar), by Jianjie Lin, explores an incident on the playground that brings two high school boys together who are worlds apart. But their middle-class existence is soon shadowed by unspoken secrets, unmet expectations, and untended emotions.

Diaries from Lebanon (Lebanon, France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar), a feature documentary by Myriam El Hajj, is set in 2018, when Joumana, a fiery feminist writer, poet and activist runs for election defying a political system that has been suffocating Lebanon for 40 years. She gets elected, only to be ousted the very next day through fraud, leaving her supporters furious. In 2019, the people’s rage turns into a revolution.
Rising Up at Night (Democratic Republic of Congo, Belgium, Germany, Burkina Faso, Qatar) by Nelson Makengo, is set amidst the background of Congo relaunching plans to build Africa’s largest power plant on the Congo River, while Kinshasa, the capital of 17 million people, is plunged into darkness and insecurity with its people struggling to gain access to light.

The film in the ‘Encounters’ section is Demba (Senegal, Germany, Qatar), by Mamadou Dia, is about a 55-year-old man, who is about to retire after 30 years of service at the city hall in his small town in Northern Senegal. But as his mental health deteriorates, he discovers a new connection with his once-estranged son.

Screening in the ‘Generation’ segment is Disco Afrika: A Malagasy Story (Madagascar, France, Mauritius, Germany, South Africa, Qatar), by Luck Razanajaona, is about 20-year-old Kwame, who struggles to make a living in the clandestine sapphire mines and is taken back to his hometown by an unexpected turn of events. As he reunites with his mother and old friends, he finds himself confronted with the rampant corruption plaguing his country.

الدوحة: اختيرت سبعة أفلام حاصلة على منح من مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام لعرضها في أقسام البرمجة الرئيسية لمهرجان برلين السينمائي الدولي الـ74 (برلينالي)، بما في ذلك قسم المسابقة الرسمية.

ويعد مهرجان برلين السينمائي الدولي واحدا من أرقى مهرجانات السينما في العالم التي تعرض أفضل الإنتاجات، وستقام دورته المقبلة خلال الفترة من 15 إلى 25 فبراير الجاري.

وتشكل الأفلام المدعومة من مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام في هذا العام شهادة أخرى على نجاح المؤسسة في رعاية الأصوات السينمائية المستقلة من العالم العربي وخارجه، وتأكيدا على الحضور العالمي للأفلام التي تدعمها مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام.

ومن بين الأفلام المختارة لهذا العام، سيعرض اثنان في المسابقة الرسمية، وهي القسم الرئيسي لمهرجان برلين الذي يضم فقط 20 فيلما حصريا من مختلف أنحاء العالم. وستعرض ثلاثة أفلام في قسم بانوراما، الذي يشمل الأفلام الدولية الاستثنائية، أمام لجنة التحكيم الأكبر في المهرجان. كما يعرض فيلم واحد في قسم “لقاءات”، وهي منصة لصناع الأفلام المستقلين الجريئين والمبتكرين، وفيلم واحد في قسم “الجيل” الذي يتناول تعقيدات جيل الشباب.

وفي هذا السياق، أعربت السيدة فاطمة حسن الرميحي الرئيس التنفيذي لمؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام، في تصريحات اليوم، عن فخر المؤسسة باختيار هذه الأفلام التي حظيت بدعم من مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام لتعرض في مهرجان برلين السينمائي هذا العام، قائلة “هذه الإنتاجات تحتفل بالأصوات المستقلة ودور الإنتاج الفنية، وغالبا ما ترسي معايير جديدة تحدد توجهات السينما المعاصرة”.

ونوهت إلى أن تنوع الأفلام المختارة يؤكد على رسالة مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام في دعم الأصوات المهمة، خصوصا المواهب الناشئة من المنطقة والعالم، لافتة إلى تميز الأفلام السبعة بمحتواها المؤثر والتقنيات المبتكرة للسينمائيين الذين سيلهمون الجماهير بسرد قصصي حافل بالإنسانية.

كما أكدت الرميحي استمرار المؤسسة، من خلال مبادراتها المتنوعة، في دعم الأصوات المؤثرة والقصص القوية التي تتسم بالقدرة على تشكيل السينما العالمية.

وتتمثل الأفلام التي تم اختيارها للعرض في هذا المحفل السينمائي الدولي في: /إلى من أنتمي/ من إنتاج (تونس، كندا، فرنسا، قطر) ومن إخراج مريم جوبور، وفيلم /شامبالا/ من إنتاج (نيبال، فرنسا، النرويج، هونج كونج، تركيا، تايوان، الولايات المتحدة، قطر) وهو عمل سردي طويل من إخراج مين بهادور بام.

وتدور أحدث الفيلم في سفح جبال الهيمالايا في أعلى مستوطنة بشرية، ويحكي قصة ثلاثة أخوة يرحل أحدهم للتجارة، مما يبني رابطا لا يمكن كسره بين الاثنين الآخرين، متجاوزا أدوارهم في قصة من الأقدار المتشابكة.

أما الأفلام التي سيتم عرضها في قسم /بانوراما/، فهي: /تاريخ موجز للعائلة/ (الصين، الدنمارك، فرنسا، قطر) من إخراج جيانج لين. يستكشف الفيلم حادثة في ساحة المدرسة تجمع بين طالبين شابين ينتميان إلى عوالم مختلفة. لكن وجودهما ضمن الطبقة الوسطى يتخلله أسرار لم تكشف، وتوقعات لم تلبى، ومشاعر غير مرغوب فيها، و/يوميات من لبنان/ (لبنان، فرنسا، السعودية، قطر)، وهو فيلم وثائقي طويل من إخراج ميريام الحاج، تدور أحداثه في عام 2018، حين تترشح جمانة، وهي كاتبة وشاعرة وناشطة، للانتخابات، و/النهوض في الليل/ (جمهورية الكونغو الديمقراطية، بلجيكا، ألمانيا، بوركينا فاسو، قطر) من إخراج نيلسون ماكينجو، تجري أحداثه في ظل إطلاق الكونغو مخططا لبناء أكبر محطة طاقة في إفريقيا على نهر الكونغو.

وفي قسم /لقاءات/، سيعرض فيلم /ديمبا/ (السنغال، ألمانيا، قطر) من إخراج مامادو ديا، ويدور حول رجل يبلغ من العمر 55 عاما، يستعد للتقاعد بعد 30 عاما من الخدمة في دار المدينة في بلدته الصغيرة في شمال السنغال. لكن مع تدهور صحته العقلية، يكتشف اتصالا جديدا مع ابنه الذي لم يكن على وفاق معه في السابق.

وسيعرض في فقرة /الجيل/ فيلم /ديسكو أفريكا: قصة ملغاشية/ (مدغشقر، فرنسا، موريشيوس، ألمانيا، جنوب إفريقيا، قطر)، من إخراج لاك رازاناجونا. يروي الفيلم قصة كوامي البالغ من العمر 20 عاما، الذي يواجه صعوبات في كسب لقمة عيشه في مناجم الياقوت السرية. يعود إلى مسقط رأسه بسبب تطورات غير متوقعة، حيث يلتقي مع والدته وأصدقائه القدامى ويجد نفسه مواجها للفساد المستشري الذي يعاني بلده منه.
