Georgetown Qatar’s Global Energy Cultures Forum Kicks Off at Msheireb Museums

Doha: The interconnections between energy, culture, and society in the pursuit of equity and sustainability was one of the themes on the first day of Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q)’s engaging public forum on “Global Energy Cultures” being held in collaboration with Msheireb Museums.

Experts and scholars, artists and filmmakers, are exploring how diverse cultural practices and energy, its consumption, production, and distribution, intertwine with everyday life all around the world, from the Global South to the Global North.

“Energy is the essence of every aspect of life: science, technology, communications, economy. Its significance goes beyond the physical and extends to culture and society. It guides our understanding of the world and binds human communities while driving collaboration as well as conflict. This edition of the GU-Q’s Hiwaraat series takes energy in all its representations as its main theme, proposing to reflect on the profound, manifold meanings of energy and our changing relationships with it as we strive for equity and sustainability,” said Dr. Safwan Masri, dean of GU-Q.

Keynote speaker, Victor Ehikhamenor, a prolific Nigerian-American visual artist and GU-Q’s first Artist-in-Residence, created an original artwork for the forum titled For Those Who Slept in the Dark with Identifiable Ghosts.

Explaining the impact of current events on the artwork, he said: “When we planned this residency months ago, nobody knew there would be these multiple wars being fought around the world. Here were are now, having this conversation about energy but somewhere in the world, there are people who no longer have a roof over their heads or ground to stand on. And some of these abnormal realities began to inform where the work took me and shifted my initial theme and perspective. It’s more about humanity now.

“We humans, whatever we touch, we exchange energy in them. From that perspective, what is the intersection between energy and culture? There’s one thing that ties all of us together is that energy is necessary, and it’s not something we can ignore, whether human energy or electrical energy or any other form,” Ehikhamenor said, adding, “We need to begin to embrace peace as much as possible. In the same way, people who believe in war are very vigorous in their advocacy for war, we need the same level of energy to ask for peace.”

Academic sessions ranged from discussions on household energy use to the spatial dynamics of energy. “Youth Voices for Sustainable Futures” amplified perspectives from the next generation.

Adding to the conference’s diverse lineup, a session titled “Heritage Spaces and Energy Futures” explored the dynamic interplay between heritage spaces and the unfolding energy future. Chaired by Nouf Al-Thani, GU-Q, the panel featured insightful contributions from Dr. Hafiz Ali Abdulla, Msheireb Properties, Dr. Hiroki Shin, Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow, Queen’s University Belfast, and Astrid Kensinger, Chair and Associate Professor of Graphic Design, VCUarts Qatar.

Sharing lessons on linking heritage conservation and energy conservation, Dr. Hafiz said: “Msheireb Downtown Doha was designed to exist in harmony with the local environment. It uses technology, old and new, to achieve maximum comfort with minimum energy use, reduce reliance on cars, reverse hi-rise trends in line with the region’s traditional architectural practices, minimizing heat gains and harnessing the natural forces of the sun and wind, while protecting the natural habitat and plants native to the region. We used this traditional wisdom in combination with modern technology to create a model for what the city of the future should be.” He added: “Economic and urban development and demographic growth have changed Qatar dramatically over the last fifty years. However, we cannot move into the future without honoring, preserving, and celebrating the traditions of the past.” The public conference, which runs through December 10 at Msheireb Museums, will include a session titled “Decolonizing Energy: Palestine and Beyond” with Dr. Muna Dajani, London School of Economics and Political Science, and Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh, founder and director of the Palestine Natural History Museum. Other sessions are an “Artist Talk: Conversation with Omar El Akkad” and a dialogue with practitioners on “Architecture and Energy”.

It will conclude with a unique music performance by Daniel Crawford, scientist and artist, the University of Alaska, and the Doha String Quartet, a member of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. The music is composed using scientific data from the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Goddard Institute for Space Studies’ Surface Temperature Analysis (GISTEMP v4), which is an estimate of global surface temperature change.

الدوحة: انطلقت أعمال منتدى جامعة جورجتاون في قطر بعنوان: /ثقافات الطاقة العالمية: كيف تشكل الطاقة حياتنا اليومية/، والذي يأتي تنظيمه بالتعاون مع متاحف مشيرب، ويستمر إلى يوم غد /الأحد/.

وألقى المشاركون خلال المنتدى، الضوء على علاقات التأثير والتأثر المتبادلة بين الطاقة والثقافة والمجتمع سعيًا لتحقيق العدالة والاستدامة.

كما ناقش الخبراء والباحثون والفنانون وصانعو الأفلام كيف تتشابك الممارسات الثقافية المتنوعة وممارسات استهلاك الطاقة وإنتاجها وتوزيعها مع مختلف جوانب الحياة اليومية في جميع أنحاء العالم، من شمال الكرة الأرضية إلى جنوبها.

وقال الدكتور صفوان المصري، عميد جامعة جورجتاون في قطر، في تصريح خاص لوكالة الأنباء القطرية /قنا/، إن هذا المؤتمر يتماشى مع ختام سلسلة مؤتمرات /حوارات/ لهذا العام التي تم إطلاقها في سبتمبر الماضي، والذي يهدف إلى جمع الباحثين والخبراء والجمهور لاستكشاف التحديات العالمية والإقليمية المشتركة واستشراف مستقبل أفضل من خلال الحوار والمناقشة، وإشراك المجتمع القطري في اثراء النقاش، مما يشجع على المشاركة المجتمعية وخلق المعرفة والبحث عن حلول مبتكرة للتحديات الحالية والمستقبلية.

وأوضح أن المنتدى يركز على الطاقة بمختلف صورها كموضوع رئيسي، ويحث على التفكير في معانيها العميقة والمتعددة وعلاقاتنا المتغيرة معها بينما نسعى جاهدين لتحقيق العدالة والاستدامة.

ونوه الدكتور صفوان، بأن هذا الحدث الذي يناقش (الطاقة) من منظور مختلف باعتبارها جوهر كل جانب من جوانب الحياة من علوم وتكنولوجيا واتصالات واقتصاد، وتتجاوز أهميتها الجانب المادي وتمتد إلى الثقافة والمجتمع والفنون.

من جهته، قال السيد عبدالله النعمة، المدير العام لمتاحف مشيرب بالوكالة، في تصريح مماثل لـ/قنا/، إن التعاون مع جامعة جورجتاون قطر لتنظيم منتدى /ثقافات الطاقة العالمية/، يعد تتويجًا لانفتاح متاحف مشيرب على محيطها الأكاديمي والبحثي، بهدف تعزيز الوعي المجتمعي بالقضايا ذات الأولوية.

إلى ذلك، تناولت النقاشات خلال جلسات اليوم الأول، عددا من المواضيع، أهمها / في كل مكان غير مرئي:استخدام الطاقة المنزلية/، /الديناميكيات المكانية للطاقة/.. كما ساهمت جلسة /أصوات شبابية لمستقبل مستدام/ في بسط وجهات نظر الجيل القادم.

وتأتي جلسة /المساحات التراثية ومستقبل الطاقة/ لتثري البرنامج الزاخر للمنتدى، حيث ناقش المشاركون فيها التفاعل الديناميكي بين المساحات التراثية ومستقبل الطاقة. وشهدت الجلسة، التي ترأستها الشيخة نوف آل ثاني من جامعة جورجتاون في قطر، نقاشات معمّقة شارك فيها الدكتور حافظ علي عبدالله، مدير أول الاتصالات المؤسسية في مشيرب العقارية، والدكتور هيروكي شين، زميل نائب المستشار جامعة كوينز بلفاست، أستريد كينسينغر، أستاذة مشاركة ورئيس قسم التصميم الجرافيكي، جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث كلية فنون التصميم في قطر.

وتحدث الدكتور حافظ علي عبدالله، مدير أول الاتصالات المؤسسية في مشيرب العقارية، عن الدروس المستفادة من الربط بين الحفاظ على التراث والطاقة، منوها بأن مشيرب قلب الدوحة، صممت بحيث تكون متناغمة مع البيئة المحلية، وتستخدم التكنولوجيا القديمة والحديثة لتحقيق أقصى قدر من الراحة مع الحد الأدنى من استخدام الطاقة، وتقليل الاعتماد على السيارات، وتفادي البنايات الشاهقة بما يتماشى مع الممارسات المعمارية التقليدية في المنطقة، وتقليل ارتفاع الحرارة واستغلال الطاقة الطبيعية للشمس والرياح، وفي الوقت نفسه، حماية المواد الطبيعية والنباتات المحلية في المنطقة.

وأضاف: استخدمنا هذه المعرفة التقليدية مع التكنولوجيا الحديثة لإنشاء نموذج لما يجب أن تكون عليه مدينة المستقبل، مشددا في الوقت نفسه، على أنه لا يمكننا الانتقال إلى المستقبل دون احترام تقاليد الماضي والحفاظ عليها والاحتفاء بها.

بدوره، قام الفنان البصري فيكتور إهيكامينور(نيجيري-أمريكي) وهو حاليا الفنان المقيم لدى جامعة جورجتاون في قطر، ومتحدث رئيسي، بإبداع عمل فني بمناسبة المنتدى بعنوان /لأولئك الذين غفوا في الظلام مع أشباح يمكن التعرف عليها/، حيث تم عرض فيديو قصير عن عمله خلال الجلسة الافتتاحية الرسمية المسائية.

وقال إهيكامينور: “عندما خططنا للإقامة في الجامعة منذ أشهر، لم يكن أحد يعلم أنه ستكون هناك هذه الحروب القائمة حول العالم، ها نحن الآن نجري هذا الحوار حول الطاقة، ولكن في مكان ما من العالم، هناك أشخاص لم يعد لديهم بيت يؤويهم أو وطن يحميهم، وبدأت صور هذا الواقع المأساوي ترسم الاتجاه الذي أعمل عليه، وغيرت موضوعي ومنظوري الأولي، فأصبح الأمر الآن أكثر ارتباطا بالإنسانية”.

وأضاف: “نحن كبشر نتبادل الطاقة مع كل شيء نلمسه، وإن كان الأمر كذلك، فكيف يتسنى لنا تعريف طبيعة التقاطعات والتداخلات بين الطاقة والثقافة؟ ثمة أمر واحد يربطنا جميعا معا ألا وهو أن الطاقة ضرورية، وهي ليست شيئا يسعنا أن نغامر بتجاهله، سواء كانت طاقة بشرية أو طاقة كهربائية أو أي شكل آخر، فنحن بحاجة إلى تبني السلام بنفس القدر، وبقدر ما يدعو مناصري الحرب إليها، فإننا نحتاج إلى نفس المستوى من الطاقة للمطالبة بالسلام”.

وسيتضمن المنتدى، غدا في متاحف مشيرب، جلسة بعنوان /إنهاء استعمار الطاقة: فلسطين وما بعدها/ تشارك فيها الدكتورة منى الدجاني، كلية لندن للاقتصاد والعلوم السياسية، والدكتور مازن قمصية، مؤسس ومدير متحف فلسطين للتاريخ الطبيعي. بالإضافة إلى الجلسات الأخرى منها /حديث فني: حوار مع عمر العقاد/ و/العمارة والطاقة: حوار مع الممارسين/.
