“Dialogue of Papers” Opens in Jakarta as Part of Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture

Jakarta: The Years of Culture initiative opened the “Dialogue of Papers”exhibition at the Emiria Soenassa Gallery, Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) in Jakarta, a remarkable artistic endeavor that encapsulates the deep cultural connection shared between Qatar and Indonesia.

On view from November 25 to December 16, 2023, the exhibition is organized as part of the Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture and delves into the intricate relationship between the two countries through the medium of papermaking. This cultural dialogue is portrayed through collaborative artworks that brought together two exceptional artists: Qatari artist, Yousef Ahmad, and Indonesian artist, Widi Pangestu.

Attending the opening of the exhibition, HE Qatar’s Ambassador to Indonesia Fawziya bint Edrees Al Sulaiti, said, “For nearly 50 years, Qatar and Indonesia have shared positive diplomatic relations – but our cultural connections run deeper. We share similar values – family as a pillar of society and the strength that diversity brings to nations and people. In fact, Indonesia is the first country from the ASEAN region to be selected as a Year of Culture partner. The Dialogue of Papers is a beautiful embodiment of our powerful connection.” Curated by Years of Culture Senior Museums Expert Dr. Aisha Al Misnad, the “Dialogue of Papers”exhibition showcases the results of a collaborative workshop held in Qatar, where Yousef Ahmad and Widi Pangestu combined the unique natural elements of both countries. This collaboration involved the fusion of palm tree pulp from Qatar with abaca and mulberry pulps from Indonesia, resulting in 36 artworks that will be on display at the Emiria Soenassa Gallery.

“The Dialogue of Papers concept is a legacy borne out of Year of Culture’s partnership with Japan. We were thrilled to be able to host Widi Pangestu in Doha for workshops with Yusuf Ahmad. The resulting artworks offer a captivating exploration of concepts such as fullness and emptiness, differences and similarities, and the power of dialogue through shared creativity. It is a visual representation of the profound connection between Qatar and Indonesia, transcending geographic boundaries through art,” said Dr. Aisha Al Misnad.

At its core, this exhibition delves into the ways in which distinct environments, landscapes, and climates have influenced the lives and experiences of people in Qatar and Indonesia. Indonesia, an archipelago of lush, green islands, boasts dense forests teeming with plants of diverse shapes and hues. The contrast is stark when compared to Qatar, a peninsula characterized predominantly by a desert landscape, a region initially appearing devoid of flora. However, the desert has generously gifted the palm tree, which has thrived in the face of harsh conditions and limited water resources.

Yousef Ahmad is one of the most prominent Qatari artists and he is amongst the first generation of Qatari artists to have studied abroad. He started his artistic career in the 1970s creating artworks by experimenting with different shapes and structures, with the ambition to form new narratives. His interest in working on paper started in the 1980s, and he has since experimented with many types of papers that originate from different places. This influenced him to make his own paper twenty years ago, using Qatar palm trees. Since then, he has come to understand that handmade paper gives his work a more profound meaning and a different visual quality. For him, it is a way to connect with the land of Qatar, his roots, and his personal memories.

Widi Pangestu is a pioneer Indonesian artist, whose work is characterized by his use and exploration of papermaking in his artistic practice. Throughout his career, he has focused on paper as the central medium for his productions and reflections, researching and experimenting with its possibilities as a vehicle for meaning making. He sees the potential of paper beyond its historical and traditional function as a medium for writing and painting. For him, papermaking offers a unique, timeless connection that extends from the past all the way to the present, and even towards the future. His unique artworks explore human connections and experiences through the continuous development of papermaking throughout history.

جاكرتا: افتتحت مبادرة الأعوام الثقافية معرض /حوار الورق/ في غاليري أميريا سويناسا، تامان إسماعيل مرزوقي (TIM) بجاكرتا، وهو جهد فني يجسد عمق العلاقات الثقافية المشتركة بين قطر وإندونيسيا.

يقام المعرض في الفترة من 25 نوفمبر إلى 16 ديسمبر المقبل، ويأتي ضمن فعاليات العام الثقافي /قطر ـ إندونيسيا 2023/، ويستكشف التفاصيل الدقيقة للعلاقة بين البلدين من خلال ممارسة صناعة الورق. ويظهر هذا الحوار الثقافي في أعمال فنية تعاونية جمعت بين اثنين من الفنانين الاستثنائيين هما الفنان القطري الرائد يوسف أحمد، والفنان الإندونيسي ويدي بانغيستو.

وقالت سعادة السيدة فوزية بنت إدريس السليطي، سفيرة دولة قطر لدى إندونيسيا خلال حضورها افتتاح المعرض: “تقاسمت قطر وإندونيسيا علاقات دبلوماسية متميزة لفترة تناهز الـ 50 عاما، لكن روابطنا الثقافية أعمق بكثير. فقيمنا واحدة، أهمها الأسرة باعتبارها ركيزة للمجتمع، والقوة التي يمنحها التنوع للأمم والشعوب. وفي الواقع، إن إندونيسيا هي أولى دول رابطة دول جنوب شرق آسيا /أسيان/ يتم اختيارها كشريك للعام الثقافي”.

ظهر معرض /حوار الورق/ إلى النور بتقييم فني من الدكتورة عائشة المسند، خبير متاحف أول بمبادرة الأعوام الثقافية‏، ويستعرض نتائج ورشة عمل تعاونية عقدت في قطر، حيث جمع يوسف أحمد وويدي بانغيستو بين العناصر الطبيعية الفريدة لكلا البلدين. وتضمن هذا التعاون دمج لب شجرة النخيل من قطر مع لب الأباكا ولب شجر التوت من إندونيسيا، مما أدى إلى إبداع 36 عملا فنيا ستعرض في غاليري أميريا سويناسا.

وفي هذا السياق، قالت الدكتورة عائشة المسند في تصريح لها بالمناسبة: “ولدت فكرة حوار الورق نتاج إرث شراكة العام الثقافي قطر – اليابان. وسعدنا باستضافة الفنان ويدي بانغيستو في الدوحة لحضور ورشات عمل مع الفنان يوسف أحمد”.

وأشارت إلى أن الأعمال الفنية الموجودة في المعرض، تقدم استكشافا آسرا لمفاهيم مثل الامتلاء والفراغ، وأوجه الاختلاف والتشابه بين الثقافتين القطرية والإندونيسية، وقوة الحوار من خلال الإبداع المشترك. إذ يعد المعرض تجسيدا للعلاقة العميقة بين قطر وإندونيسيا، التي تتجاوز الحدود الجغرافية من خلال الفن.

يتطرق المعرض، إلى الطرق التي أثرت بها البيئات والمناظر الطبيعية والمناخات المتميزة على حياة وتجارب الناس في كل من قطر وإندونيسيا. حيث تتميز إندونيسيا، وهي عبارة عن أرخبيل من الجزر الخضراء الوارفة، بغابات كثيفة تعج بالنباتات ذات الأشكال والألوان المتنوعة. في حين أن قطر تتميز في الغالب بمناظر طبيعية صحراوية، وهي منطقة تبدو في البداية خالية من النباتات. إلا أن هذه الصحراء تتزين بالنخلة التي صمدت في مواجهة الطبيعة القاسية وشح الموارد المائية.

جدير بالذكر، أن الفنان الرائد يوسف أحمد، يعد من أبرز الفنانين في قطر وهو من الجيل الأول من الفنانين القطريين الذين درسوا في الخارج. بدأ مسيرته الفنية في سبعينيات القرن الماضي بإبداع أعمال فنية من خلال تجربة أشكال وبنى مختلفة، مع طموحه بتشكيل سرديات جديدة.

بدأ اهتمامه بالعمل على الورق في الثمانينيات، ومنذ ذلك الحين قام بتجربة العديد من أنواع الورق من مصادر مختلفة. ودفعه ذلك إلى صنع ورقه الخاص قبل عشرين عاما باستخدام أشجار النخيل القطرية. وهنا أدرك أن الورق المصنوع يدويا يمنح معنى أكثر عمقا وجودة بصرية مختلفة. وبالنسبة له، فهي وسيلة للتواصل مع أرض قطر وجذوره وذكرياته الشخصية.

أما الفنان ويدي بانغيستو، فهو فنان إندونيسي رائد، تتميز أعماله باستخدام تقنية صناعة الورق في ممارسته الفنية. طوال حياته المهنية، ركز على الورق باعتباره الوسيط الأساسي لإنتاجاته وتأملاته، حيث قام بالبحث والتجريب في إمكانات الورق كوسيلة لإنشاء المعنى. وهو يرى أن تلك الإمكانات تتجاوز وظيفته التاريخية والتقليدية كوسيط للكتابة والرسم. فبالنسبة له، توفر صناعة الورق ارتباطا فريدا وخالدا يمتد من الماضي إلى الحاضر، ويستشرف المستقبل. وتستكشف أعماله الفنية الفريدة الروابط والتجارب الإنسانية من خلال التطوير المستمر لصناعة الورق عبر التاريخ.
