Qatar Museums Presents ‘Dan Flavin – Donald Judd: Doha’ at QM Gallery Al Riwaq

Doha: Qatar Museums recently opened the first in-depth presentation worldwide in nearly two decades of the work of the closely linked artists Dan Flavin (19331996) and Donald Judd (19281994). The exhibition is also the first major presentation of Flavin and Judd’s works in the MENA region.

Dan Flavin and Donald Judd were considered two of the founders of minimalism, the widely influential art movement that broke free from traditional notions of painting and sculpture to focus on experiencing real space and materials. Flavin and Judd met in 1962 in New York, and quickly became central figures among a cohort of artists including Lee Bontecou, John Chamberlain, Yayoi Kusama, Sol Lewitt, Claes Oldenburg, and Frank Stella, who were charting the new terrain between painting and sculpture.

Dan Flavin – Donald Judd: Doha is organised by Qatar Museums in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and is curated by Michael Govan, LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg, Director, and Jennifer King, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, of LACMA.

Featuring 37 works by Flavin and 25 works by Judd, Dan Flavin – Donald Judd: Doha focuses on the artists’ shared engagement with material, colour, and form. Spanning the 1960s through the 1990s, the exhibition will highlight works from the collection of Qatar Museums, as well as important loans from other museums, private collections, the Dan Flavin Estate, and the Judd Foundation.

The exhibition is organised with works by both the artists installed in the three central galleries, demonstrating their intersecting concerns and practices.

The galleries ?anking this central section are dedicated separately to each artist. Highlights of Dan Flavin – Donald Judd: Doha include: Flavin’s early lightwork the diagonal of May 25, 1963 (to Constantin Brancusi), 1963, was related to the Constantin Brancusi sculpture Endless Column; Works from Flavin’s “monument” for V. Tatlin series using cool white florescent lights of different lengths in varying arrangements; A number of the works that were shown in the landmark exhibition dan flavin: fluorescent light in 1964 at New York’s Green Gallery; A large-scale installation by Flavin, alternating pink and “gold,” 1976; A landmark Judd work, untitled, 1964, that marks the artist’s transition between painting and sculpture; A group of metal progression works intended to be shown in buildings Judd designed, but never completed, in Marfa, Texas at the Chinati Foundation, which have never been exhibited as a group outside Marfa; Judd’s untitled, 1986, the artist’s largest wall work in plywood and plexiglass comprised of thirty units.

The exhibition is a legacy project of the 2021 Year of Culture between Qatar and the United States, a yearlong cultural exchange designed to deepen the understanding between two nations and their people. The Year of Culture Qatar-United States also featured exhibitions of the works of Jeff Koons and Virgil Abloh in Doha and an exhibition of extraordinary textiles and portraits on loan from the Museum of Islamic Art at Washington, DC’s Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art.
A robust public program will accompany the exhibition and include in-person and digital panel conversations and lectures, special tours, and more.

Qatar Museums and LACMA share a history of collaboration and professional exchanges going back to 2012 with the presentation of the LACMA’s exhibition, Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts at the Museum of Islamic Art. In 2018, the partnership was later expanded through a joint collaboration with the Yuz Museum in Shanghai. The exhibition will run until February 2024.

الدوحة: افتتحت متاحف قطر أول معرض متعمق على مستوى العالم على الإطلاق خلال العقدين الماضيين، يجمع أعمال الفنانين دان فلافن (1933 – 1996)، ودونالد جد (1928 – 1994) اللذين التقيا عام 1962 في نيويورك.

ويعد المعرض أيضا أول استعراض شامل لأعمال فلافن وجد في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا.

ويضم هذا المعرض، الذي يستضيفه جاليري متاحف قطر – الرواق، أعمال اثنين من أبرز الشخصيات في عالم الفن التبسيطي، وهي حركة فنية مؤثرة على نطاق واسع، تحررت من المفاهيم التقليدية للرسم والنحت، للتركيز على تجربة الفضاء الحقيقي والخامات.

ويأتي هذا المعرض بالتعاون مع متحف مقاطعة لوس أنجلس للفنون، وبتقييم فني من مايكل جوفان، الرئيس التنفيذي لمتحف مقاطعة لوس أنجلس للفنون ومدير مركز واليس أننبرغ للفنون، وجنيفر كينغ القيم المساعد للفن المعاصر في متحف مقاطعة لوس أنجلس للفنون.

‎ ويضم المعرض 37 عملا لفلافن و25 عملا لجد، ويركز على تفاعل الفنانين المشترك مع الخامة واللون والشكل، كما يضم أعمالا تمتد منذ فترة الستينيات وحتى التسعينيات من القرن الماضي، ويستمد معروضاته من مجموعة متاحف قطر، وغيرها من المؤسسات والمجموعات الخاصة، ومؤسسة جد ومجموعة فلافن.

ويتكون المعرض من 3 قاعات عرض مركزية تعرض أعمال الفنانين، بشكل يدل على اهتماماتهما وممارساتهما الفنية المتلاقية، كما تم تخصيص صالات عرض محيطة بهذا القسم المركزي لعرض أعمال لكل فنان منهما على حدة.

وتشمل أبرز الأعمال الفنية في معرض /دان فلافن – دونالد جد: الدوحة/‎ ‎عمل دان فلافن الخفيف من بداياته /ضوء 25 مايو 1963 المائل/ المستوحى من تمثال قسطنطين برانكوسي “العمود اللانهائي”، وأعمالا من سلسلة /النصب التذكاري/ لفلافن باستخدام مصابيح فلورسنت بيضاء باردة بأطوال مختلفة في ترتيبات مختلفة، فضلا على ‎عدد من الأعمال التي تم عرضها في المعرض التاريخي /دان فلافن: ضوء الفلورسنت/ في عام 1964 في جاليري غرين بنيويورك.

‎ كما تتكون الأعمال أيضا من عمل تركيبي ضخم للفنان فلافن، يجمع فيه بين اللونين الوردي و”الذهبي”، 1976، وعمل بارز لجد، “بدون عنوان”، 1964، يؤرخ لانتقال الفنان بين الرسم والنحت، ثم مجموعة من التتابعات المعدنية من أعمال صممت للعرض في مبان صممها جد، ولكن المجموعة لم تكتمل أبدا، في مارفا، تكساس في مؤسسة تشيناتي، والتي لم يتم عرضها أبدا كمجموعة خارج مارفا. ‎ ويعد العمل الفني “بدون عنوان”، 1986، أضخم منحوتة جدارية للفنان دونالد جد من الخشب الرقائقي والبلكسي جلاس، وتتكون من 30 وحدة. ‏ جدير بالذكر أن المعرض يعد مشروع إرث للعام الثقافي /قطر ـ أمريكا 2021/، وهو عبارة عن تبادل ثقافي يستمر لمدة عام، ويهدف إلى تعميق التفاهم بين بلدين وشعبيهما.

كما شهد العام الثقافي /قطر ـ أمريكا/ معرضين لأعمال كل من جيف كونز وفيرجيل أبلوه في الدوحة، ومعرضا للمنسوجات والصور الاستثنائية المعارة من متحف الفن الإسلامي في المتحف الوطني للفنون الآسيوية التابع لمؤسسة سميثسونيان في واشنطن العاصمة.

وسيرافق المعرض برنامج ثري من الفعاليات يشمل ندوات ومحاضرات تعقد حضوريا وعبر الإنترنت، وجولات خاصة.

وتتشارك متاحف قطر ومتحف مقاطعة لوس أنجلس للفنون تاريخا من التعاون والتبادل المهني يعود إلى عام 2012 من خلال تقديم معرض /هدايا السلطان: فنون الإهداء في البلاط الإسلامي/ بمتحف مقاطعة لوس أنجلس للفنون في متحف الفن الإسلامي، وفي عام 2018 تم توسيع نطاق الشراكة من خلال التعاون المشترك مع متحف يوز في شنغهاي. ‎ تجدر الإشارة إلى أن معرض /دان فلافن – دونالد جد: الدوحة/ سيستمر في استقبال زواره إلى فبراير 2024.
