QU Launches 4th International Sustainability Conference

Doha: Qatar University (QU), launched today, the 4th International Sustainability Conference (ISC2023), which brings together for two days, researchers, academics, policymakers, and business experts to discuss the latest research and technologies to address global challenges.

The conference, organized by the College of Arts and Sciences and the Center for Sustainable Development (CSD), will showcase scientific advancements in sustainable development were covered through four dedicated sessions focused on: Climate Change and Sustainability, Food and Water Security, Bioenergy and Renewables & Waste Management & Circular Economy.

Each session focuses on innovative sustainable approaches to overcoming resource depletion, biodiversity loss, and waste reduction, reuse, and recycling. The conference aims to expand the scope of exchange of experience and identify innovative solutions to achieve integrated management of available resources to achieve the concept of sustainable development.

In her speech on the occasion, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences , Dr. Fatima Al Kubaisi, said that this conference represents a real and effective opportunity to present and discuss the latest developments in the areas of research related to the axes of “food and water,” “waste,” “alternative energies,” and “climate changes,” aimed at to achieve sustainable development goals.

She noted the State of Qatar’s commitement for their work towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since 1971, stemming from the belief that the best way to achieve this is through achieving social progress, economic growth and food security, without compromising the sustainability of the environment and the ocean.

she added, Since then, Qatar has made significant progress in many areas and contributed to the achievement of many of the SDGs set by the United Nations. Sustainability is one of the key sectors, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, to build a strong economy that takes into account the social and environmental aspect.

She stressed that food and water security, renewable energies, waste management and climate change are among the most important challenges that must be addressed to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development Fatima Al Kubaisi emphasized the essential to integrate the efforts of all stakeholders, decision-makers and academic researchers in order to find urgent and effective solutions to achieve these priorities.

Associate Dean for Sciences and Applied Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Khalifa Al Hazaa, stressed in his speech that organizing this conference comes at a time when the State of Qatar is celebrating Qatar Sustainability Week 2023, as well as organizing the International Horticultural Expo 2023. The State strives to achieve a balance between economic and human development while preserving natural resources and sustaining production systems.

He highlighted the CSD’s role in this context, as a platform for knowledge and advanced technologies in sustainable development, through applied research in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the scientific research priorities of QU.

CSD Director, Prof. Sami Sayadi said in his speech that the center focused on areas that are very important not only for the State of Qatar but also for the whole world, starting with food and water security, energy transition, waste recycling, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, climate change and studying the impact of pollutants on biodiversity.

In her speech at the conference, Head of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences,Dr. Fatima A. Al Khayat, said: “Through this conference, we seek to expand the exchange of experiences in teaching and research to identify innovative solutions to achieve the concept of sustainable development.”

الدوحة: بدأت بجامعة قطر أعمال المؤتمر الدولي الرابع للاستدامة (ISC2023)، الذي يجمع على مدى يومين باحثين وأكاديميين وصناع قرار وخبراء أعمال؛ لمناقشة أحدث الأبحاث والتقنيات لمواجهة التحديات العالمية المتعلقة بالتنمية المستدامة.

ويشهد المؤتمر، الذي ينظمه مركز التنمية المستدامة وقسم العلوم البيولوجية والبيئية بكلية الآداب والعلوم، عرض التطورات العلمية في مجال التنمية المستدامة من خلال 4 جلسات أساسية تتمحور حول تغير المناخ والاستدامة، والأمن الغذائي والمائي، والطاقة الحيوية والطاقة المتجددة، وإدارة النفايات والاقتصاد الدائري.

كما يركز المشاركون على الأساليب المستدامة المبتكرة للتغلب على استنفاد الموارد وفقدان التنوع البيولوجي، وتقليل النفايات وإعادة الاستخدام وإعادة التدوير، في مسعى لتوسيع نطاق تبادل الخبرات، والتعرف على الحلول المبتكرة لتحقيق إدارة متكاملة للموارد المتاحة في سبيل تحقيق مفهوم التنمية المستدامة.

وقالت الدكتورة فاطمة الكبيسي عميدة كلية الآداب والعلوم بالجامعة في كلمة خلال الافتتاح: إن هذا المؤتمر يمثل فرصة حقيقية وفاعلة لطرح ومناقشة آخر التطورات في مجالات البحث المتعلقة بمحاور “الغذاء والمياه” و”النفايات” و”الطاقات البديلة” و”التغيرات المناخية”، الرامية لتحقيق أهداف التنمية المستدامة.

ونوهت إلى التزام دولة قطر بتحقيق أهداف التنمية المستدامة منذ سنة 1971، وقالت: إن ذلك ينبع من إيمانها بأن السبيل الأمثل لتحقيق التنمية يكمن في إنجاز تقدم اجتماعي ونمو اقتصادي وأمن غذائي دون المساس باستدامة البيئة والمحيط.

وأضافت: “منذ ذلك الوقت، أحرزت قطر تقدما كبيرا في العديد من المجالات، وساهمت في تحقيق العديد من أهداف التنمية المستدامة التي حددتها الأمم المتحدة”.. مشيرة إلى أن قطاع الاستدامة يعد أحد القطاعات الرئيسية التي تتماشى مع رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030 لبناء اقتصاد قوي يأخذ بعين الاعتبار الجانب الاجتماعي والبيئي.

واعتبرت الدكتورة فاطمة الكبيسي أن الأمن الغذائي والمائي والطاقات المتجددة وإدارة النفايات ومواجهة التغيرات المناخية من بين أهم التحديات التي يجب معالجتها من أجل تحقيق التنمية الشاملة والمستدامة.

وأكدت على أهمية دمج جهود جميع أصحاب المصلحة وصناع القرار والباحثين الأكاديميين من أجل إيجاد حلول عاجلة وناجعة لتحقيق هذه الأولويات الملحة، منبهة إلى أهمية نشر الوعي، وإنشاء روابط اتصالية وثيقة وفعالة بين جميع الجهات الفاعلة المعنية لتحقيق هذه الأهداف في أسرع الآجال.

بدوره، أكد الدكتور خليفة الهزاع العميد المساعد للعلوم والعلوم التطبيقية بكلية الآداب والعلوم أن تنظيم هذا المؤتمر يأتي في وقت تحتفل فيه دولة قطر بأسبوع الاستدامة، وكذلك بتنظيم معرض /إكسبو 2023 الدوحة/ للبستنة، مشيرا إلى أن الدولة تسعى جاهدة إلى تحقيق التوازن بين التنمية الاقتصادية والبشرية، مع الحفاظ على الموارد الطبيعية واستدامة نظم الإنتاج.

ولفت إلى دور مركز التنمية المستدامة كمنصة للمعرفة والتقنيات المتقدمة في التنمية من خلال البحوث التطبيقية المنسجمة مع رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030 وأولويات البحث العلمي لجامعة قطر.

وعرض الدكتور سامي الصيادي، مدير مركز التنمية المستدامة بجامعة قطر، دور المركز في تعزيز الجهود في العديد من المجالات، وعلى رأسها الأمن الغذائي والمائي، والتحول في الطاقة، وإعادة تدوير النفايات، وتخفيف انبعاثات الغازات الدفيئة، والتغيرات المناخية، ودراسة تأثير الملوثات على التنوع البيولوجي.

إلى ذلك، أكدت الدكتورة فاطمة الخياط، رئيس قسم العلوم البيولوجية والبيئية بكلية الآداب والعلوم، أن الجامعة تسعى من خلال هذا المؤتمر إلى تبادل الخبرات والتجارب بين مختلف الفاعلين؛ لمواجهة التحديات التنموية وتحقيق التطلعات في تنمية مستدامة لجيل اليوم والمستقبل.
