Samsung to Offer More Than 5 Years Security Update Support

Seoul: Samsung is planning on supporting its devices security updates for over five year. Currently, Samsung provides up to five years of security updates and up to four years of Android OS updates.

According to principal engineer and technical program manager of the security team in Samsung’s Mobile eXperience division Shin-Chul Baik, the company plans to support its devices with long-term security updates in line with its vision and in the light of the upcoming new regulations.

Samsung offers updates to a tremendous amount of devices that exceeds a billion device a month, and over 10 billion a year.

Google has recently announced its commitment to provide all updates to the new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones for a full seven years, which may encourage other companies to follow suit or at least improve their policy of issuing updates to make their devices more sustainable than they are currently.

وقال شين شول بيك، مدير البرنامج الفني لفريق الأمان في قطاع تجربة الهواتف المحمولة في سامسونج، إن الشركة تخطط لدعم أجهزتها بالتحديثات الأمنية على المدى الطويل تماشيا مع رؤيتها وفي ضوء القواعد التنظيمية الجديدة القادمة.

وتقدم سامسونج التحديثات لعدد هائل من الأجهزة يزيد على مليار جهاز شهريا، وأكثر من 10 مليارات جهاز سنويا.

وتمتلك الشركة حاليا أكثر من 150 جهازا مختلفا في الأسواق، تصدر لها تحديثات أمنية على أساس شهري أو ربع سنوي أو نصف سنوي.

وكانت جوجل قد أعلنت حديثا التزامها بتوفير كافة التحديثات لهواتف بكسل 8 وبكسل 8 برو الجديدة لمدة سبعة أعوام كاملة، وهو ما قد يشجع باقي الشركات أن تحذو حذوها أو تحسن على الأقل سياسة إصدار التحديثات لديها لجعل أجهزتها أكثر استدامة مما هي عليه.
