The Art of Dan Flavin & Donald Judd: A Doha Debut

Doha: This autumn, Qatar Museums will unveil the largest museum exhibition outside of the United States, marking the first comprehensive showcase of the work of American artists Dan Flavin (1933-1996) and Donald Judd (1928-1994) in nearly two decades. It’s also the first major presentation of Flavin and Judd’s artworks in the MENA region.

These artists were pivotal figures in the Minimalism movement, which revolutionized traditional notions of painting and sculpture by emphasizing the experience of real space and materials. Flavin and Judd crossed paths in 1962 in New York, becoming central figures among artists like Lee Bontecou, John Chamberlain, Yayoi Kusama, Sol Lewitt, Claes Oldenburg, and Frank Stella, who were exploring the new frontier between painting and sculpture.

Opening to the public on October 25, 2023, at QM Gallery Al Riwaq, “Dan Flavin | Donald Judd: Doha” is organized by Qatar Museums in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and curated by Michael Govan, LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director, along with Jennifer King, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at LACMA. This exhibition is part of Qatar Creates, a year-round national cultural initiative that promotes and celebrates Qatar’s diverse cultural activities while connecting residents and global audiences with Qatar’s creative industries.

The exhibition, featuring 34 works by Flavin and 25 by Judd, focuses on their shared exploration of material, color, and form. Spanning the 1960s to the 1990s, it will showcase pieces from Qatar Museums’ collection as well as significant loans from other museums, private collections, the Dan Flavin Estate, and the Judd Foundation.

Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, expressed gratitude to Michael Govan and their partners at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for bringing this landmark exhibition to Qatar, introducing the works of contemporary art icons Dan Flavin and Donald Judd not only to Qatar but to the entire region. She emphasized the lasting influence of these artists, extending beyond visual arts into fields like architecture, design, and furniture.

Michael Govan remarked, “Dan Flavin and Donald Judd are often regarded as the pioneers of American minimalism, comparable in innovation to European painters Picasso and Braque in the early 20th century. In 1960s New York, they envisioned a new art form created from common industrial materials prevalent in modern culture. Far from being ‘minimal,’ the works in this exhibition from all stages of their careers demonstrate their mastery of color, form, materials, and their integration with the surrounding architecture.”

The exhibition features works by both artists displayed in three central galleries, showcasing their shared interests and practices. Separate galleries on each side are dedicated to Flavin and Judd. Highlights of “Dan Flavin | Donald Judd: Doha” include:

• Flavin’s early lightwork “the diagonal of May 25, 1963 (to Constantin Brancusi),” 1963, inspired by Constantin Brancusi’s sculpture “Endless Column.”
• Works from Flavin’s “monument” for V. Tatlin series using cool white fluorescent lights of different lengths in various arrangements.
• Several works from the landmark exhibition “dan Flavin: fluorescent light in 1964” at New York’s Green Gallery.
• A large-scale Flavin installation, alternating pink and “gold,” in 1976.
• A significant Judd work, “untitled,” 1964, representing the artist’s transition from painting to sculpture.
• A group of metal progression works intended for buildings designed by Judd in Marfa, Texas, at the Chinati Foundation, which have never been exhibited together outside Marfa.
• Judd’s vertical stack works, including one in galvanized iron and one in brass and green plexiglass, showcasing his mastery of material and color.
• Judd’s “untitled,” 1986, the artist’s largest wall work in plywood and plexiglass, composed of thirty units.

This exhibition is a legacy project of the 2021 Year of Culture between Qatar and the United States, a yearlong cultural exchange aimed at deepening mutual understanding. The Year of Culture Qatar-United States also featured exhibitions of the works of Jeff Koons and Virgil Abloh in Doha, along with an exhibition of extraordinary textiles and portraits on loan from the Museum of Islamic Art at Washington, DC’s Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a robust public program, including in-person and digital panel discussions, lectures, special tours, and more. Qatar Museums and LACMA have a history of collaboration dating back to 2012, and their partnership has expanded over the years, including joint collaborations with the Yuz Museum in Shanghai in 2018.

• أعمال من سلسلة “النصب التذكاري” لفلافين للفنان V. Tatlin باستخدام أضواء الفلورسنت البيضاء الباردة بأطوال مختلفة في ترتيبات متنوعة.
• العديد من الأعمال التي عرضت في معرض “دان فلافين: ضوء الفلورسنت في عام 1964” في معرض Green Gallery في نيويورك.
• تثبيت كبير لفلافين بألوان متناوبة وردي و”ذهبي” في عام 1976.

سيتم مرافقة المعرض ببرنامج عام غني يشمل مناقشات لوحات الحائط، ومحاضرات، وجولات خاصة، والمزيد. تشترك متاحف قطر وLACMA في تاريخ تعاوني يعود إلى عام 2012، وتوسعت شراكتهما على مر السنين، بما في ذلك التعاون المشترك مع متحف Yuz في شنغهاي في عام 2018.
