Doha: Doha is currently hosting a renowned art installation that’s worth a visit if you’re looking for a unique and artistic experience. Head over to Northwestern University in Qatar to witness the mesmerizing Gaia, a world-famous art piece created by Luke Jerram, a distinguished British installation artist.
Gaia is a massive, internally lit inflatable globe with a diameter of six meters, prominently displayed in the university’s forum. This stunning structure was crafted using highly detailed NASA images of Earth’s surface, sourced from the Visible Earth series. While Gaia is 2.1 million times smaller than our planet, it offers visitors an up-close, 3D perspective of Earth. Every centimeter of this inflatable orb represents 21 kilometers of our planet’s surface. So, if you stand 181 meters away, you’ll see Earth as it appears from space, resembling the view from the moon.
Gaia rotates slowly, completing one full rotation every four minutes. To enhance the experience, it is accompanied by an immersive surround-sound composition composed by the celebrated British musician, Dan Jones.
You can catch this captivating installation until December 7th. The exhibition is open from Sunday to Thursday, 10 am to 8 pm, at Northwestern University in Education City.
