World Leaders Rally Around Morocco After Catastrophic Quake

Doha: World leaders and diplomats from various countries have expressed condolences and support for Morocco following a devastating earthquake near the popular tourist destination of Marrakesh. The earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, occurred late on Friday and has resulted in the loss of at least 632 lives, with 329 others injured, including 51 in critical condition, according to Moroccan authorities.
Leaders worldwide, including Qatar, have extended their sympathies and support to Morocco. Qatar’s Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani conveyed sincere condolences to HM King Mohammed VI of Morocco and the Moroccan people for the earthquake’s victims across the country. He prayed for the mercy of Allah Almighty upon the victims, the speedy recovery of the injured, and the safety of Morocco and its people.
In Europe, leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and others expressed their condolences and readiness to assist Morocco in this time of crisis.
Leaders from Russia and Ukraine also offered their sympathies, with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressing solidarity and condolences to Morocco.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan conveyed their sorrow and support, while leaders from the Middle East, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, expressed condolences and offered assistance.
World bodies, such as the African Union Commission and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, expressed condolences and prayers for the victims. The World Health Organization also pledged support for the immediate health needs of those affected by the earthquake.
