Qatar’s Ambitious Solar Power Goal: 30% by 2030

Doha: In order to advance the shift towards renewable energy for sustainability, Qatar aims to have solar power account for 30 percent of its total electricity production by 2030, according to a senior official.
Although Qatar currently relies primarily on gas-fired thermal plants for electricity generation, the journey towards renewable energy began with the Al Kharsaah Solar PV Power Plant (KSPP), stated Mohammad Saleh Al Ashqar, Senior Engineer at the National Control Center (NCC) within Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).
During an interview with Qatar TV, Al Ashqar explained that KSPP, operational ahead of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, currently fulfills approximately 7 percent of the total energy demand.
He further added, “There are ongoing plans, including collaborations with partners like QatarEnergy, to expand solar energy production. We are exploring options to increase this percentage in alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to achieve 30 percent of the country’s total electricity production.”

وخلال مقابلة مع قناة قطر التلفزيونية مؤخرًا، أوضح الاشقر أن محطة KSPP، التي تم تشغيلها قبل بطولة كأس العالم لكرة القدم في قطر 2022، تلبي حاليًا حوالي 7 بالمائة من الطلب الكلي على الكهرباء.
وأضاف قائلاً: “بالطبع، هناك مشاريع مستقبلية بالتعاون مع شركاء مثل قطر إنرجي لإنتاج المزيد من الطاقة الشمسية. نحن ندرس سبل زيادة هذه النسبة لتحقيق رؤية قطر الوطنية لعام 2030 والتي تعادل 30 بالمائة من إجمالي إنتاج الكهرباء في البلاد.”
