Fire Station Artist in Residence Presents “The Present The Future of the Past” Exhibition

Doha: The Fire Station: Artist in Residence opened on Wednesday “The Present: The Future of the Past,” a unique exhibition showcasing the practices of 31 talented alumni of Qatar Museums Artist-in-Residence (AIR) programme. The exhibition will remain on view until Dec. 16, 2023, at the Fire Station’s Garage Gallery, Gallery 3, and Gallery 4.

The Present: The Future of the Past, comprises artworks created during residencies for the years 2021-2022 (AIR 6) and 2022-2023 (AIR 7). It offers visitors a glimpse into inner workings of artists’ studios and artists’ unique processes, from concept to realization, resulting in provocative artworks in varied media. The Fire Station’s AIR programme is a nine-month residency for artists across all disciplines in Qatar, empowering them to nurture and grow their talents through production support, curatorial guidance, and expert mentorships. Artists are provided with well-equipped studio spaces and unrestricted access to the building’s facilities, which include a fabrication lab, woodshop, and exhibition spaces. Upon completing their residency, artists are given the opportunity to showcase their transformative artworks in a public exhibition at Fire Station.

Khalifa Ahmad Al Obaidli, Director of Fire Station, commented, “The Present: The Future of the Past exhibition truly embodies the essence of our Artist in Residence programme at the Fire Station. Our residency program plays a vital role in supporting Qatar’s art scene, fostering local talent, and cultivating a thriving creative community. As an integral component of Qatar Museums Creative Hubs, we actively contribute to the vision of creating a strong and sustainable cultural infrastructure, which is instrumental in shaping the future of art in our nation. We invite everyone to join us at Fire Station to explore the captivating works of these artists.” Saida Al Khulaifi, Exhibition Curator of the Fire Station, added: “This exhibition embraces the power and potential of the artistic process. From what is often a seemingly simple beginning, a concept can undergo a wondrous transformation, from an intangible thought to a concrete visual or audio presentation that can connect profoundly with the viewer. During their tenure from September to June, artists had the invaluable opportunity to explore this phenomenon and wholeheartedly embrace its transformative power. The exhibited artworks represent diverse experiences, nurtured through numerous stages, and lovingly embraced within the artist’s studio – a realm teeming with imagination, often defying the constraints of physics and reality.” The artists featured in this exhibition are: Abdulaziz Yousef, Abdulrahman Almuftah, Arman Mansouri, Aya Battiri, Charlene Kasdorf, Fatima Javed, Hind Alobaidli, Lucy Martin, Noor Alkharaan, N&LS, Sharefa Al Mannai, Simon Mortimer, Yousef Fakhroo, Amna Almuftah, Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Voyyyd, Abir Zakzouk, Ali Al Naama, Farah Al Sidiky, Fatima Al Yousef, Hazim Hussain, Hemanth Madupu, Johnatan Machado, Mohammed Abdullah Al Hamadi, Luke Webb, Maha Al Sulaiti, Noof Al Theyab, Noor Al Kuwari, Sarah Jayyousi, Sheikha Al Khulaifi, and Wadha Al Mesalam.

الدوحة: افتتح في /مطافئ:‏‎ ‎مقر الفنانين/، اليوم، معرض /الحاضر: مستقبل الأمس/، بمشاركة 31 من خريجي برنامج الإقامة الفنية بمتاحف قطر. ويستمر إلى السادس عشر من ديسمبر المقبل في جاليري الكراج وجاليري 3 وجاليري 4 بمطافئ.

ويتضمن المعرض، الأعمال الفنية التي ابتكرها الفنانون أثناء برنامجي الإقامة الفنية في الأعوام 2021 – 2022 (برنامج الإقامة الفنية 6) و2022 – 2023 (برنامج الإقامة الفنية 7).

ويقدم المعرض لزواره لمحة عن طريقة العمل الداخلية المتبعة باستوديوهات الفنانين وما يباشرونه من أعمال فريدة، بدءا من ابتكار المفهوم وحتى تنفيذه، وما يفرزه ذلك من أعمال فنية جذابة بخامات متنوعة.

ويمتد برنامج الإقامة الفنية على مدار تسعة شهور ويستضيف الفنانين من كافة التخصصات في دولة قطر، حيث يعمل البرنامج على تشجيعهم على صقل مواهبهم من خلال دعم إنتاجهم وإتاحة التوجيه من جانب القيمين الفنيين وإرشادات الخبراء، حيث يحصل الفنانون على مساحات استوديوهات فنية مجهزة بما يلزم ويحق لهم استخدام مرافق البناية بشكل غير محدود، ويشمل ذلك مختبرات التصنيع وورش النجارة ومساحات العرض. وبمجرد انتهاء الفنانين من إقامتهم، تتاح لهم فرصة عرض أعمالهم الفنية التي أبدعوها لتعبر عن مفهومهم الفني في معرض عام بمطافئ.

وقال السيد خليفة أحمد العبيدلي مدير مطافئ في تصريح له اليوم، إن معرض /الحاضر: مستقبل الأمس/، يجسد بالفعل جوهر برنامج الإقامة الفنية بمطافئ. حيث يؤدي البرنامج دورا حيويا في دعم المشهد الفني في قطر، كما أنه يرعى المواهب المحلية ويعزز من نشوء مجتمع مبدع وناجح.

وأضاف: “نظرا لكوننا عنصرا أساسيا في المراكز الإبداعية التابعة لمتاحف قطر، فإننا نسهم بشكل فعال في رؤية إنشاء بنية تحتية ثقافية قوية ومستدامة، الأمر الذي يعد شديد الأهمية في تشكيل مستقبل الفن في أمتنا. ندعو الجميع للانضمام إلينا في مطافئ لاستكشاف الأعمال الرائعة لأولئك الفنانين.

من جهتها، أوضحت سعيدة الخليفي – قيم المعارض بمطافئ، أن هذا المعرض يحتضن قوة وإمكانات رحلة العملية الفنية، مشيرة إلى أن مفهوم العمل الفني قد ينبع من نقطة تبدو وكأنها بسيطة ويمكن أن يتطور بعد ذلك بشكل كبير، حيث يولد المفهوم كفكرة غير ملموسة ليتحول بعد ذلك لعرض مرئي أو سمعي قادر على التواصل العميق مع الجمهور.

ولفتت إلى أنه أثناء فترة الإقامة الفنية من سبتمبر وحتى يونيو الماضيين، حصل الفنانون على فرصة غير مسبوقة لسبر أغوار ظاهرة تطور المفهوم الفني والانغماس العميق في فكرة الطاقة التحولية (قدرة الفنان على تحويل الفكرة إلى عمل فني)، منوهة بأن الأعمال المعروضة تعكس خبرات متنوعة تشكلت خلال العديد من المراحل وتم تبنيها بشغف في استوديوهات الفنانين – وهي مساحات تفيض بالخيال وتمكن الفنانين من تحدي القيود المادية والواقع.
