Rally Argentina: Al Attiyah Maintains Lead Despite Tough Stage

Doha: Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah from Qatar held onto his top position in the Rally Argentina (Desafio Ruta 40), even though he secured third place in the second stage yesterday.

This event marks the second-to-last round of the World Rally Raid Championship (W2RC).

Together with his co-driver Mathieu Baumel, Al Attiyah currently leads the W2RC rankings following their victory at the Sonora Rally in Mexico earlier this season.

They maintain a comfortable 30-point lead over their closest competitor in the W2RC standings. A strong performance in Argentina might allow them to secure their second consecutive W2RC title, building on their victory from the previous year’s debut season.

However, during yesterday’s stage, Al Attiyah and Baumel, who had previously triumphed in the prologue and first stage in Argentina, faced difficulties in a segment with exceptionally soft dunes spanning from 250 to 270 kilometers. This section included a challenging 10-kilometer stretch where the Toyota team of Al Attiyah, Saudi driver Yazeed Al Rajhi, and young Argentinean Juan Cruz Yacopini encountered difficulties.

Ultimately, Yacopini emerged as the victor, finishing 10 minutes and 42 seconds ahead of Al Attiyah. The reigning world champion, Al Attiyah, who revealed that this race would be his final one with Toyota, managed to retain his overall lead by a narrow margin.

Yacopini is now just 17 seconds behind Al Attiyah, while Al Rajhi trails in third place, 16 minutes and 31 seconds behind. Three more stages remain in the Argentina Rally.
