Qatar Museums to Launch Fashioning an Empire: Textiles from Safavid Iran on October 23

Doha: Under the patronage of HE Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani, Qatar Museums will present Fashioning an Empire: Textiles from Safavid Iran, an exhibition featuring a selection of extraordinary textiles from its collection, on view at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) from October 23, 2023 through April 20, 2024. The exhibition, to be displayed in MIA’s Sheikh Saoud Gallery, highlights the importance of silk in the vibrant social, economic, and artistic life of the Safavid empire (1501-1736).

HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani said, “The presentation of Fashioning an Empire in Washington, D.C. was a great highlight of the Qatar-USA 2021 Year of Culture, and a shining example of how cultural exchange brings people together and fosters mutual understanding. Nothing could have been more appropriate since cultural exchange is the very theme of this abundantly fascinating exhibition. We are now exceptionally proud to showcase magnificent works from the Qatar Museums collections, and amplify their presentation, in this enhanced version of the exhibition, for the enjoyment and education of our public in Qatar and our many visitors from around the world.”

MIA Director Dr. Julia Gonnella said, “Fashioning an Empire: Textiles from Safavid Iran illuminates a particularly significant period of Iranian history, during which Iran acquired a very distinctive visual identity. Artwork originating from Iran represents the largest holding in MIA’s collection, and until now, we have not had the opportunity to display many of these pieces. Through the presentation of our collection, we hope to deepen the understanding and appreciation for Islamic art and demonstrate the vast diversity of Islamic culture across the world.” Fashioning an Empire: Textiles from Safavid Iran opens just more than one year since MIA’s reopening to the public following an extensive facilities enhancement project that saw the reimagination and reinstallation of the museum’s permanent collection galleries.

This exhibition begins with a presentation of the geographical and historical setting of the silk and textile industry. The second part focuses on Isfahan, the capital at the time, and the empire’s marketplace. The third part explores the art and practices of self-representation in Safavid society through fashion, pairing historical textiles with contemporary illustrations and paintings. The fourth and final section, Fashion Forward, bridges the past with the present, displaying a selection of specially commissioned pieces, garments, and handbags by Qatar-based designers inspired by Safavid textiles from MIA’s collection.

Fashioning an Empire has been planned under the direction of MIA curator Nicoletta Fazio, expanding on the original concept of the exhibition as organised by the Smithsonian. The more than 100 works on view, drawn from MIA and Qatar Museums’ permanent collections as well as loans from the Qatar National Library, includes a wide selection of artefacts, among them 20 precious brocade silk textiles and 12 carpets from the Safavid period. Powerful intermediaries for new artistic ideas that stimulated a new visual language, such textiles were among the most desirable luxury commodities traded across the globe at the time. The exhibition is further enriched by a set of four full-length portraits which provide a glimpse into the diverse population that characterized the Safavid imperial capital.

For the display at MIA, the exhibition’s narrative has been expanded to include a new section that embraces contemporary fashion designs. M7, Qatar’s epicentre for innovation and entrepreneurship in fashion and design, has engaged a group of local artists to create garments inspired by the exquisite textiles showcased in the exhibition. This part of the exhibition is supervised by MIA curator Tara Desjardins.

The exhibition is part of Qatar Creates, the year-round national cultural movement that curates, promotes, and celebrates the diversity of cultural activities in Qatar and connects residents and global audiences with Qatar’s creative industries.

الدوحة: تحت رعاية سعادة الشيخة المياسة بنت حمد آل ثاني، رئيس مجلس أمناء متاحف قطر، تدشن متاحف قطر معرض /أناقة إمبراطورية: منسوجات من إيران الصفوية/، والذي سيقام في قاعة الشيخ سعود في متحف الفن الإسلامي، في الفترة من 23 أكتوبر 2023 وحتى 20 أبريل 2024 القادم ويتضمن مختارات متنوعة من المنسوجات الفريدة الحريرية خلال الحقبة الصفوية (1501-1736م).

وقالت سعادة الشيخة المياسة بنت حمد آل ثاني، رئيس مجلس أمناء متاحف قطر بهذه المناسبة: “كانت إقامة معرض أناقة إمبراطورية في العاصمة واشنطن من قبل علامة بارزة في فعاليات العام الثقافي قطر – أمريكا 2021، ومثالا ساطعا عن قدرة التبادل الثقافي على مد جسور التواصل بين الشعوب وتعزيز التفاهم المشترك بينها، وما كان لشيء آخر أن يأتي بثمار أفضل، لأن التبادل الثقافي هو موضوع هذا المعرض فائق الروعة”.

وأضافت سعادتها: “تغمرنا مشاعر الفخر لعرض هذا الأعمال البديعة من مجموعة متاحف قطر، والتوسع في إبرازها، في هذه النسخة المحدثة من المعرض، وذلك يثري تجربة المتعة والثقافة لدى جمهورنا القطري وزوارنا الكثيرين من مختلف أنحاء العالم”.

من جهتها قالت الدكتورة جوليا غونيلا، مدير متحف الفن الإسلامي: إن معرض “أناقة إمبراطورية: منسوجات من إيران الصفوية” يلقي الضوء على فترة مهمة من التاريخ الإيراني، اكتسبت إيران خلالها هوية بصرية غاية في التميز، وتمثل الأعمال الفنية التي أنتجت في إيران الجزء الأكبر في مجموعة متحف الفن الإسلامي.

وأضافت: “لم تتح لنا حتى الآن فرصة عرض العديد من هذه القطع، من خلال تقديم مجموعتنا في هذا المعرض، نتطلع لتعميق فهم وتقدير الفن الإسلامي، وإظهار تنوع الثقافة الإسلامية الهائل في جميع أنحاء العالم”.

وتأتي إقامة معرض “أزياء إمبراطورية: منسوجات من إيران الصفوية” بعد أكثر من عام على إعادة افتتاح متحف الفن الإسلامي أبوابه للجمهور في حلته الجديدة بعد مشروع واسع النطاق لتحسين مرافقه وإعادة تصور وتركيب قاعات عرض مجموعته الدائمة.

ويبدأ المعرض بتقديم السياق الجغرافي والتاريخي لصناعة الحرير والمنسوجات في تلك الحقبة، ويركز الجزء الثاني على أصفهان التي كانت عاصمة الإمبراطورية وقلبها التجاري في ذلك الوقت، أما الجزء الثالث فيستكشف فنون وممارسات التمثيل الذاتي في المجتمع الصفوي من خلال الأزياء، وربط المنسوجات التاريخية مع الرسوم التوضيحية واللوحات المعاصرة لها، بينما يشكل القسم الرابع والأخير شغف الأزياء وهي نقطة وصل بين الماضي والحاضر من خلال تقديم مجموعة مختارة من القطع والملابس وحقائب اليد كلف بها مصممون مقيمون في قطر واستوحوا تصميماتها من المنسوجات الصفوية في مجموعة متحف الفن الإسلامي.

كما يضم المعرض مجموعة واسعة من التحف بلغت أكثر من 100 قطعة اختيرت من مجموعة متحف الفن الإسلامي ومتاحف قطر الدائمة، وقطع فنية معارة من مكتبة قطر الوطنية، بالإضافة إلى 20 قطعة من منسوجات البروكار الحريري النفيس، و12 سجادة تعود إلى الحقبة الصفوية، ونظرا للدور القوي الذي لعبته هذه المنسوجات كوسائط تجسد الأفكار الفنية الحديثة وقتذاك، والتي حفزت مبدعيها على تبني لغة بصرية جديدة، فقد كانت من بين أكثر السلع الفاخرة تداولا في جميع أنحاء العالم في ذلك الوقت، كما يزدان المعرض بمجموعة من أربع صور زيتية بالطول الكامل تقدم لمحة عن التنوع السكاني الذي تميزت به عاصمة الإمبراطورية الصفوية آنذاك.

وقد أضيف قسم إلى سردية المعرض يركز على تصاميم الأزياء المعاصرة، وقد قام /M7/ مركز قطر الإبداعي للابتكار وريادة الأعمال في مجالات الأزياء والتصميم، بتكليف باقة من الفنانين المحليين لتصميم أزياء مستوحاة من المنسوجات الخلابة التي يقدمها المعرض، ويشرف على هذا الجزء من المعرض تارا ديجاردان، القيم الفني في متحف الفن الإسلامي.

يشار إلى أن هذا المعرض يأتي في إطار مبادرة “قطر تبدع”، وهي حركة ثقافية وطنية على مدار العام ترعى وتروج وتحتفي بتنوع الأنشطة الثقافية في قطر وتربط المقيمين والجمهور العالمي بالصناعات الإبداعية في قطر.
