Qatar’s Bank Assets Rise by 1.4% in June 2023: A Closer Look

Doha: Qatar’s banking sector witnessed a 1.4% month-on-month increase in total assets in June 2023, reaching QR 1.906 trillion.

During the same period, the total loan book of Qatar’s banking sector grew by 0.3% month-on-month, and deposits increased by 0.1% month-on-month but declined by 4.4% in 2023. Both public and private sectors contributed to the overall credit growth. As deposits rose by 0.1% in June, the Loan-to-Deposit Ratio (LDR) increased to 131.5%, compared to 131.2% in May 2023.

In June 2023, the overall loan book saw a 0.3% increase. Total public sector loans went up by 0.6% month-on-month, while the semi-government institutions’ segment witnessed a substantial 42.9% month-on-month surge. However, the government segment, which represents approximately 28% of public sector loans, increased by 0.7% month-on-month, but the government institutions’ segment, representing about 65% of public sector loans, saw a decline of 2.5% month-on-month.

For June 2023, domestic private sector loans increased by 0.2% month-on-month and 0.9% in 2023. The main driver behind the private sector loan increase was the “Consumption & Others” segment, which contributes approximately 20% to private sector loans and rose by 1.3% month-on-month and 1.5% in 2023. Meanwhile, the “General Trade” segment, contributing about 21% to private sector loans, increased by 0.4% month-on-month and 3.0% in 2023. The “Services” segment, accounting for around 30% of private sector loans, saw a marginal increase of 0.05% month-on-month and 1.8% in 2023. However, the “Real Estate” segment, contributing about 22% to private sector loans, declined by 0.7% month-on-month and 1.8% in 2023. Outside Qatar, loans increased by 0.2% month-on-month but decreased by 0.9% in 2023.

In June 2023, non-resident deposits increased by 1.5% month-on-month but declined by 7.1% in 2023, partially supporting the overall increase in deposits for the month.

Private sector deposits edged up by 0.1% month-on-month but decreased by 1.4% in 2023. Among private sector segments, the “Consumer” segment increased by 0.3% month-on-month and 4.1% in 2023, while the “Companies & Institutions” segment declined by 0.2% month-on-month and 7.0% in 2023 during June 2023.

Public sector deposits decreased by 0.7% month-on-month and 6.8% in 2023 for June 2023. The main contributor to this decline was the “Government Institutions” segment, representing approximately 57% of public sector deposits, which decreased by 6.0% month-on-month and 5.3% in 2023. Meanwhile, the “Government” segment, representing about 28% of public sector deposits, decreased by 2.0% month-on-month and 13.8% in 2023. In contrast, the “Semi-Government Institutions” segment increased significantly by 29.7% month-on-month and 2.3% in 2023 in June 2023.

The loan provisions to gross loans ratio for Qatar’s banking sector remained at 3.8% in June 2023, similar to May 2023. Moreover, the banking sector’s liquid assets to total assets ratio increased to 31.1% in June 2023, compared to 30.4% in May 2023.
