Calligraphy Artwork in Qatar National Library Embodying Islamic Heritage

Doha: A Calligraphy contemporary artwork by Iranian calligrapher, abstract artist and architectural, Ramin Shridal, embodies the essence of Islamic heritage in Qatar National Library (QNL).

This artwork, which is inspired by the Islamic Arabic calligraphy and the geometric patterns formed from it, is one of the valuable and varied artworks displayed throughout Qatar Foundation.

These artworks inspire creative thinking, encourage cultural dialogue, and creates a motivating environment that makes the library a compelling place to explore books, cultural events, and the work of artists and illustrators.

Director of Research and Learning Services at QNL Abeer Al Kuwari said that artwork, which is located on the library’s wall in the spacious foyer, reflects Qatar’s commitment in preserving cultural heritage while keeping up with the developments in the contemporary world.

She noted that the implementation of this artwork came within QNL’s efforts of uplifting the Arabic language and spreading it locally and regionally. This is also reflected in the wide collection of Arabic books in the library and the digital resources that continuous to provide support to Arab writers and publishers.

Al Kuwari explained that this artwork expresses Shridal’s innovative and contemporary approach to Islamic calligraphy in the best way, as he uses a three-dimensional design of words from the Holy Quran in Arabic calligraphy. This gives spectators a sense of flow and continuous movement and they cannot help but feel awe and amazement. It is not only a great work of art, but also shows the power that art has in inspiring and uniting people, Al Kuwari said.

On his part, Ramin Shridal said that he tried to made sure in the past decade that his work falls between space and the world of things, and he uses flexible and streamlined shapes and sculptures to accomplish this. Shridal further explained that the idea behind the creation of the artwork was to give an aesthetic touch to QNL’s concrete wall by using Arabic calligraphy.

ويأتي هذا العمل المستوحى من الخط العربي الإسلامي والأنماط الهندسية المتدرجة المتشكل منها، ليكون أحد الأعمال القيمة والمتنوعة المتوزعة في كافة أرجاء مؤسسة قطر.

وتعزز الأعمال الفنية في المدينة التعليمية التفكير الإبداعي، وتشجع الحوار الثقافي، وتسهم في خلق بيئة ملهمة تجعل من المكتبة مكانا شيقا لاستكشاف عالم الكتب والفعاليات الثقافية وما تبدعه أنامل الفنانين والرسامين.

وفي هذا السياق، قالت عبير الكواري مدير شؤون البحوث وخدمات التعلم بمكتبة قطر الوطنية: “يرمز العمل الفني إلى التزام دولة قطر ‏بصون التراث الثقافي مع مواكبة تطورات العالم ‏المعاصر”، مشيرة إلى أن تنفيذ هذا ‏العمل الفني جاء ضمن جهود مكتبة قطر ‏الوطنية الحريصة على النهوض باللغة ‏‏العربية ونشرها على الصعيدين المحلي ‏والإقليمي، حيث تجلت من خلال مجموعة ‏المكتبة الشاملة ‏من الكتب العربية، بالإضافة إلى ‏مصادرها الرقمية المتنوعة ودعمها المستمر ‏للكتاب والناشرين العرب.

وأوضحت أن هذا العمل الفني يعبر عن نهج شريدال ‏المبتكر والمعاصر للخط الإسلامي خير ‏تعبير، إذ ‏يستخدم الفنان تصميما ثلاثي الأبعاد ‏لكلمات الآية القرآنية الكريمة بالخط العربي، ما ‏يعطي ‏المشاهدين والناظرين إحساسا يمتلئ ‏بالتدفق والحركة المستمرة، مبينة أنه عندما يقف الزائرون أمام هذا العمل الفني، لا يسعهم إلا الشعور بالمهابة والدهشة؛ ‏فهو ليس عملا ‏فنيا بديعا فحسب، بل شهادة تؤكد على قوة الفن في إلهام ‏الناس وتوحيدهم.

وأشارت الكواري إلى أن منحنيات وتدرجات هذا العمل الفني “تجسد رسالة المكتبة وجهودها البارزة في ‏صون ‏التراث الثقافي والحفاظ عليه”، إذ يتضافر ‏العمل الفني وموقعه الذي يزين جدار المكتبة المطل ‏على بهوها الرحب ‏الفسيح ليؤكد رسالة المكتبة الهادفة إلى حماية كنوز الماضي وإطلاق العنان ‏لخوض غمار آفاق ‏المستقبل اللانهائية.

من جهته، قال الفنان الإيراني رامين ‏‏شريدال: “خلال العقد الماضي، كنت أحرص على أن تشكل أعمالي الفنية نقطة التقاء وصلة وصل بين الفضاء وعالم الأشياء”، لافتا إلى أنه لأجل ذلك، استعان بالأشكال والمنحوتات المرنة والانسيابية، بعد أن كانت الفكرة وراء ابتكار هذا العمل الفني هو إضفاء لمسة جمالية على الجدار الخرساني باستعمال الخط العربي.
