Over 1,000 emergency calls made in Qatar each day as demand for ambulances jumps 30%

The number of calls the Hamad Medical Corporation’s Ambulance Service gets on a daily basis has gone up by 30 percent from nearly 700 to more than 1,000 amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Even during the pandemic, Dr Robert Owen, CEO of the Ambulance Service, said it responds to hundreds of emergency calls not associated with the coronavirus infection.

“The outbreak of Corona Virus (Covid-19) presented many challenges that we had not faced before, but we have planned and prepared well for such crises during the past years,” Dr Owen said.

Over the past decade, work was undertaken to expand the capacity of ambulance services and develop the quality of care provided, he said, adding that ensuring the availability of equipment and expertise required to manage crises such as the coronavirus outbreak was part of that development.

Planning and preparing for crises is reflected in the ability to provide services fully, including the safe transportation of confirmed or suspected cases, and the provision of medical services within different regions, he added.

Brendon Morris, the Executive Director of the Ambulance Service, said, “The coronavirus outbreak reflected our ability to respond to a high number of emergency calls, as we witnessed an increase of 30 percent of our daily activity during the (Covid-19) pandemic. Before that, we used to receive about 700 calls a day, and this number continued to increase until it reached nearly 1,000 calls per day in recent months.”

He added that hundreds of calls arrive to the ambulance service daily from people suffering from medical emergencies that are not related to the Coronavirus (Covid-19), and that its employees are fully prepared to provide assistance for any situation that requires emergency medical intervention.

تواصل خدمة الإسعاف التابعة لمؤسسة حمد الطبية دورها المهم في تنفيذ إجراءات الوقاية من فيروس كورونا «كوفيد – 19»، والاستجابة يومياً لمئات مكالمات الطوارئ غير المرتبطة بحالات الفيروس، كما تلعب دوراً محورياً في تنفيذ الإجراءات التي وضعها قطاع الرعاية الصحية في دولة قطر لوقاية السكان من فيروس كورونا «كوفيد – 19».

وقال الدكتور روبرت أوين، الرئيس التنفيذي لخدمة الإسعاف بمؤسسة حمد الطبية: «إن تفشي فيروس كورونا «كوفيد – 19» طرح العديد من التحديات التي لم يسبق لنا مواجهتها من قبل، ولكننا قمنا بالتخطيط والاستعداد الجيد لمثل هذه الأزمات خلال السنوات الماضية».

وأوضح أنه جرى العمل طوال العقد الماضي على توسيع سعة خدمات الإسعاف، وتطوير جودة الرعاية المقدمة.. مشيراً إلى أن ضمان توافر المعدات والخبرة المطلوبة لإدارة أزمات مثل تفشي فيروس كورونا «كوفيد – 19» يمثل جزءاً من هذا التطوير.

بدوره قال السيد بريندون موريس، المدير التنفيذي لخدمة الإسعاف: «إن أزمة تفشي فيروس كورونا «كوفيد – 19» عكست قدرتنا على الاستجابة لعدد مرتفع من المكالمات الطارئة، حيث شهدنا زيادة بنسبة 30 % من نشاطنا اليومي خلال جائحة «كوفيد – 19». حيث كنا قبلها نتلقى حوالي 700 مكالمة في اليوم عادة، واستمر هذا العدد بالتزايد إلى أن وصل إلى ما يقارب 1000 مكالمة يومياً خلال الأشهر الأخيرة».

وأضاف أن مئات المكالمات تصل لخدمة الإسعاف يومياً من الأشخاص الذين يعانون من حالات طبية طارئة لا تتعلق بفيروس كورونا «كوفيد – 19»، وأن العاملين فيها على أتم الاستعداد لتقديم المساعدة لأية حالة تتطلب تدخلاً طبياً طارئاً.

من جانبه أوضح السيد علي درويش، مساعد المدير التنفيذي لخدمة الإسعاف بمؤسسة حمد الطبية، أنه مع قدوم آلاف المسافرين إلى دولة قطر يومياً، في بداية الأزمة قامت خدمة الإسعاف بنقل أي مسافر يعاني من الحمى ولديه سجل سفر سابق إلى إحدى الدول المتضررة من الفيروس، إما إلى المرافق الطبية أو إلى مركز الحجر الصحي بعد إجراءات الفحص عليه في المطار وظهور أعراض فيروس كورونا «كوفيد – 19»، عليه.
