Qatar has ample facilities and staff to treat critically-ill COVID-19 patients: HMC ICU Chairman

Dr. Ahmed Al Mohammed, Acting Chairman of Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Intensive Care Units (ICU) says Qatar has more than sufficient healthcare facilities and staff to cope with the current number of COVID-19 patients who require intensive treatment and advanced respiratory support, and he says the country is prepared, should the number rise.

“Late last month Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital was designated as a dedicated COVID-19 treatment center due to its state-of-the-art facilities, which allowed us to quickly convert it into a hospital able to provide the highest level of care to critically ill COVID-19 patients,” said Dr. Al Mohammed, who is also Acting Medical Director of Hazm Mebaireek General Hospital (HMGH).

“We have almost tripled the overall bed capacity of the hospital, increasing from 118 beds to 330 beds. And we can further increase to 560 beds (ICU and non-ICU), through the use of a field hospital,” added Dr. Al Mohammed.

Dr. Al Mohammed says to date, over 135 patients with COVID-19 have been treated in the hospital’s 150-bed ICU, with more than half of those patients having recovered enough to be transferred to a non-critical care unit or released into home quarantine, or a designated quarantine facility. He says Qatar has been able to cope so well with the pandemic because of widespread testing and ample capacity to treat patients who require hospital-level care.

“Patients at HMC receive world-class care from experienced, highly-qualified medical, nursing, and allied healthcare professionals. HMGH is one of five COVID-19 treatment facilities, with The Cuban Hospital, the Communicable Disease Centre, Mesaieed Hospital, and the newly opened Ras Laffan Hospital also being dedicated COVID-19 treatment facilities, each able to provide ICU-level care. Here at HMGH, we have a team of over 250 doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, clinical pharmacists, dietitians, and social workers, all specialists in caring for critically ill patients. Working together the whole health system took the time to prepare for this crisis. We ensured staff had the proper training and, where necessary, we re-purposed existing resources and facilities to ensure optimal care for all patients, especially the seriously ill,” said Dr. Al Mohammed.

“Should the number of COVID-19 patients who require ICU-level care rise, HMC has contingency plans in place which would enable us to redeploy manpower from other parts of the healthcare system. Severely ill COVID-19 patients require sophisticated treatment and we have not only sufficient numbers of staff and equipment but also the specialized skills and experience required to care for the sickest patients,” added Dr. Al Mohammed. 

A shortage of ventilators – mechanical breathing machines needed to keep people with severe pneumonia and respiratory failure alive – has been a challenge faced by many countries in caring for COVID-19 patients, but Dr. Al Mohammed says there is no shortage of qualified staff or equipment in Qatar.

To date, most COVID-19 patients treated in the ICU at HMGH have been between the ages of 35 and 70 years old, with many having existing medication conditions, namely high blood pressure. Dr. Al Mohammed says the average length of stay for COVID-19 patients in the ICU has been between two and three weeks, but he noted patients with existing medical conditions often take longer to recover from the virus. He says it is essential that the entire country continues working together to stop the spread of COVID-19.

“Because of the thoughtful actions and early defensive steps taken by Qatar’s leadership, it is unlikely that we will see the very high numbers of deaths they are seeing in other regions of the world. However, the public must remember this is a very serious virus; it can be fatal. We must continue to adhere to infection prevention measures, which include social distancing. While we are fully prepared to care for the sickest patients, we need to continue working together to ensure that our hospital system, and specifically our ICUs, are not overwhelmed. The horrific scenarios we have seen around the globe need not apply here, but we must all work together to stop the spread of this virus,” added Dr. Al Mohammed.

أكد الدكتور أحمد المحمد رئيس قسم العناية المركزة في مؤسسة حمد الطبية بالوكالة، والمدير الطبي لمستشفى حزم مبيريك العام بالوكالة، أن دولة قطر تمتلك المرافق والكوادر الطبية الكافية لتقديم الرعاية الصحية للأعداد الحالية من المصابين بفيروس كورونا «كوفيد – 19»، ممن يحتاجون إلى العناية الطبية الحرجة والعلاج التنفسي المتقدم.

كما أكد الدكتور المحمد، في تصريح لوكالة الأنباء القطرية «قنا»، جاهزية النظام الصحي في الدولة للتعامل مع هؤلاء المرضى في حال ارتفاع أعداد الإصابات بعدوى فيروس «كوفيد – 19»، موضحاً أن مؤسسة حمد الطبية قامت في نهاية الشهر الماضي، بتخصيص مستشفى حزم مبيريك العام كمرفق لعلاج مرضى فيروس كورونا «كوفيد – 19»، لما يتمتع به هذا المرفق الصحي من إمكانات متطورة لتوفير رعاية عالية الجودة لذوي الحالات الحرجة من المصابين بعدوى هذا المرض.

وقال إنه تمت زيادة السعة السريرية لهذا المستشفى إلى ما يقرب من ثلاثة أضعاف سعته السابقة، حيث ازداد عدد الأسرة من 118 سريراً إلى 330 سريراً، مع إمكانية زيادة هذا العدد إلى 560 سريراً «للعناية المركزة وغير المركزة»، وذلك من خلال استغلال مستشفى ميداني ملحق تم إنشاؤه لهذه الغاية.

وأشار الدكتور المحمد إلى أنه تم حتى الآن معالجة ما يزيد عن 135 من مرضى «كوفيد – 19» في قسم العناية المركزة بمستشفى حزم مبيريك العام، حيث تعافى أكثر من نصف هؤلاء المرضى، أو تحسنت أوضاعهم الصحية ولم يعودوا بحاجة للرعاية الصحية الحرجة، حيث تم نقلهم إما لأقسام الرعاية العادية، أو للعزل الصحي المنزلي، أو مرافق الحجر الصحي التي تم تخصيصها لهذه الغاية.

ونوه بأن النظام الصحي في الدولة تمكّن من مواكبة مستجدات جائحة «كورونا»، ومواجهة تحدياتها من خلال استراتيجية الفحوصات المكثفة للحدّ من تفشي الفيروس، ومن خلال توفير المرافق الصحية الكافية لاستيعاب المرضى الذين يكونون بحاجة للرعاية الصحية في المستشفيات.

وقال الدكتور أحمد المحمد، إن مرضى مؤسسة حمد الطبية يتلقون خدمات رعاية صحية ذات معايير عالمية، على أيدي كوادر طبية وتمريضية وطبية مساندة، حيث يعتبر مستشفى حزم مبيريك العام واحداً من خمسة مرافق تم تخصيصها لعلاج مرضى فيروس كورونا «كوفيد – 19» قادرة على توفير العناية الطبية المركزة التي قد يحتاجها هؤلاء المرضى، وهي المستشفى الكوبي، ومركز الأمراض الانتقالية، ومستشفى مسيعيد، ومستشفى راس لفان الذي تم افتتاحه مؤخراً.

وأفاد بأن مستشفى حزم مبيريك العام لديه ما يزيد عن 250 من كوادر الرعاية الصحية من أطباء، وكوادر تمريضية، واختصاصيي علاج طبيعي، واختصاصيي علاج تنفسي، وصيادلة إكلينيكيين، واختصاصيي تغذية علاجية، واختصاصيين اجتماعيين، لتقديم الرعاية اللازمة لذوي الحالات الحرجة من مرضى «كوفيد – 19»، لافتاً إلى أن جهود النظام الصحي بكامل مكوناته في دولة قطر تضافرت من أجل التجهيز والاستعداد لمواجهة هذه الأزمة، حيث بذل كثير من الوقت والجهد لتدريب الكوادر، كلما اقتضت الضرورة ذلك، وتحويل وتكييف الموارد والمرافق الطبية، لضمان تقديم أفضل رعاية صحية ممكنة للمرضى، خاصة ذوي الحالات الحرجة منهم.

وأوضح الدكتور المحمد أنه في حال ارتفاع أعداد المصابين بفيروس كورونا «كوفيد – 19» الذين يحتاجون إلى العناية المركزة، فإن لدى مؤسسة حمد الطبية خططاً مُعدّة سلفاً، تتمثل في إعادة نشر الكوادر الطبية من مختلف مرافق الرعاية الصحية الأخرى، بحيث تفي بمتطلبات الرعاية الطبية المرتبطة بجائحة «كورونا».

وقال: «ندرك درجة تعقيد معالجة الحالات الحرجة من مرضى «كوفيد – 19»، ولكن لدينا ما يكفي من المرافق الطبية المجهزة، وكوادر الرعاية الصحية القادرة على تقديم الرعاية اللازمة لمرضى الحالات الحرجة».
