Brown turtles appear for the first time in Qatar

Ten brown sea turtles have appeared for the first time in Qatar, according to the Center for Environmental Sciences at Qatar University.

The endangered Hawksbill sea turtles hatching of the Turtle Protection Project, implemented by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and represented by the Department of Protection and Wildlife at Fuerte Beach, continues with 23 nests and more than 2,000 small turtles have been released.

The team took the necessary measurements of the young turtles and re-launched them to the sea and followed them to make sure they entered the sea without the risk of predation.

The turtle protection project is being carried out under the auspices of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, funded by Qatar Petroleum and the implementation of the Center for Environmental Sciences at Qatar University, in collaboration with a team from the Department of Protection and Wildlife, covering the country’s northeastern beaches (Ras Laffan Beach, Hawila, Al-Jassasia, Al-Muroona, Fuerte, Al-Gharia, Al-Mafir), and islands (UmTis, Ras Rukn).

أعلن مركز العلوم البيئية التابع لجامعة قطر، عن ظهور عشرة من صغار السلاحف البحرية البنية اللون لأول مرة في قطر.

وتتواصل عمليات فقس السلاحف البحرية صقرية المنقار المهددة بالانقراض بمشروع حماية السلاحف، الذي تنفذه وزارة البلدية والبيئة ممثلة بإدارة الحماية والحياة الفطرية بشاطئ فويرط، حيث وصل عدد الأعشاش إلى 23 عشاً وتم إطلاق ما يزيد عن (2000) من صغار السلاحف.

وقد قام فريق العمل بأخذ القياسات اللازمة لصغار السلاحف وإعادة إطلاقها للبحر ومتابعتها للتأكد من دخولها البحر دون التعرض لخطر الافتراس.

ويجري العمل بمشروع حماية السلاحف تحت إشراف وزارة البلدية والبيئة وبتمويل من قطر للبترول وتنفيذ مركز العلوم البيئية بجامعة قطر، بالتعاون مع فريق من إدارة الحماية والحياة الفطرية، ويجرى فيه تغطية الشواطئ الشمالية الشرقية بالدولة (شاطئ راس لفان، حويلة، الجساسية، المرونة، فويرط، الغارية، المفير)، والجزر (أم تيس، رأس ركن).
