British supermarket Sainsbury’s launches exclusively at Al Meera

Customers can now buy products by Sainsbury’s in Qatar with the launch of the leading British supermarket chain at Al Meera.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony of Sainsbury’s shop-in-shop in Qatar took place at Al Meera’s flagship hypermarket, Hyatt Plaza Mall, under the patronage of Marakez Holding chairman Sheikh Suhaim bin Khalid al-Thani and British ambassador Ajay Sharma, along with representatives from Al Meera Group and Sainsbury’s UK.

An exclusive distribution agreement was signed between Marakez Trading Co and Sainsbury’s in May 2019. Thanks to the agreement, shoppers in Qatar will be able to find a range of products by the famous UK brand at selected Al Meera outlets, according to a press statement.

Ambassador Sharma noted that trade between the UK and Qatar continues to grow. “I am delighted to see another example of our successful trading relationship with the opening of the first Sainsbury’s store in Qatar in partnership with Al Meera Group. The UK has some of the highest food standards in the world and I hope that all customers enjoy the quality and variety of the food that Sainsbury’s offers,” he said.

“Our teams are constantly working hard to bring new shopping experiences to customers and we’re delighted to have signed this agreement to offer both locals and expatriates living in Qatar exclusive products from Sainsbury’s,” said Abdelkarim al-Zoubi, chief executive officer, Marakez Trading Co.

Sainsbury’s shop-in-shop at Al Meera’s Hyatt Plaza Mall store carries a wide range of distinctive own-brand food lines that will also be available in these selected Al Meera outlets: Al Markhiya, Azghawa 1, Bin Omran, Jeryan, Onaiza 2, Gulf Mall, Jeryan, Al Qutaifeya, Leabaib 1 and Al Mirqab (Al Nasr), the statement notes.

“We are pleased to serve our customers with a variety of Sainsbury’s products at some of our major branches as well as the shop-in-shop in the Hyatt Plaza branch. At Al Meera, we are always looking for ways to provide our customers with a unique shopping experience,” the Al Meera statement added.

Richard Hodges, head of Sales and Wholesale Buying at Sainsbury’s, said Al Meera is one of Qatar’s leading retailers and “we are delighted to be launching over 350 great-quality Sainsbury’s own-brand products across its supermarket network”. “Our offer will bring more choice and innovation to customers in Qatar and includes our best-selling brands, such as by Sainsbury’s, our premium Taste the Difference range, Be Good To Yourself, Deliciously FreeFrom, SO Organic, Little Ones and OraCare,” he added.

Also present at the opening were Sheikh Khalifa bin Khalid al-Thani, Marakez Holding; Yousef Ali al-Obaidan, CEO, Al Meera; Feroz Moideen, Group CEO, Marakez; Mohamed Hussain al-Ali, managing director, Marakez Holding; and Olivier Latour, commercial director, Al Meera.
