Amir to open 24th Arabian Gulf Cup today

Doha: Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will open the 24th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup, which will begin at the iconic Khalifa International Stadium today.
Asian champions Qatar is all set to take on Iraq in the opening match of the eight-nation tournament. The match will kick off at 7.30pm.
Three-time champions Qatar, have enjoyed a good form in recent months and will go all out for full points in their first Group A match.
“First game in a group of four is always important and we are fully focused on it,” Qatar coach Felix Sanchez told a press conference yesterday. “Iraq have a strong team and it is going to be a tough match,” said Sanchez.
The other Group A teams – the UAE and Yemen – will also square off in second match of the day at Al Duhail Stadium.
Group B includes 10-time champions Kuwait, defending champions Oman, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and UAE teams received official welcome upon their arrival in Doha, yesterday.
