First renal transplant surgeries performed at Sidra Medicine

Sidra Medicine, a Qatar Foundation entity, has reached yet another milestone by performing the first renal transplant surgeries in partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).

Surgeons from Sidra Medicine and HMC jointly performed the first live donor renal transplants, marking the launch of paediatric renal transplant services at Sidra Medicine. The first surgery took place on April 14 and a second child successfully received a renal transplant on May 8. Both surgeries involved adult-to-child transplantation.

A joint team from Sidra Medicine and HMC overseen by Dr Abu Bakr Imam, division chief of Paediatric Nephrology and Hypertension at Sidra Medicine, organised and prepared for two kidney transplant surgeries between mother and child.

The first renal transplant patient, Mohamed, aged five, was in the final stages of renal failure and undergoing dialysis. His mother donated one of her kidneys to make him lead a healthier, normal life.

Mohamed’s surgery was conducted by Sidra Medicine’s Prof Pippi Salle, division chief of Urology, and Dr Bruno Leslie, paediatric urologist. His mother’s kidney was harvested laparoscopically by Dr Omar Ali and Prof Bernhard Jonas Wadstrom, transplant surgeons from HMC. Both surgeries were done consecutively at Sidra Medicine.

Mohamed’s surgery has been deemed a success and he no longer requires dialysis. After an 11-day stay at Sidra Medicine, Mohamed was discharged on April 25 and he went back to his family. His mother was discharged four days after the surgery.

Dr Abdulla al-Kaabi, chief medical officer at Sidra Medicine, said: “Our first patient, Mohamed, was incredibly fortunate to have the surgery done within the same facility, saving precious time. His surgery was a wonderful example of collaboration between our teams here at Sidra Medicine and HMC as we specialise in children’s surgeries while the expert HMC team handle adult transplantations. The collaboration also marks the official launch of the renal transplant service at Sidra Medicine.”

“These momentous surgeries were the product of ongoing cooperation between HMC and Sidra Medicine and this milestone is the culmination of many months of meticulous planning by our multi-disciplinary transplant team, led by Dr Yousuf al-Maslamani. HMC has the benefit of over 30 years of kidney transplant experience, and we are proud of our role as a pioneer and innovator in the field of organ transplantation in Qatar,” noted Dr Abdulla al-Ansari, acting chief medical officer at HMC. “We’re honoured to be able to share our experience and expertise with our colleagues at Sidra Medicine in order to make lifesaving transplantation a viable option for more residents of Qatar.”

The activation of the paediatric renal transplantation surgeries at Sidra Medicine marks another specialty surgery service. It offers all required procedures including kidney transplant biopsies, diagnostic radiology, pathology, desensitisation, urinary tract reconstruction and nephrectomies.

Sidra Medicine works closely with HMC’s Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation (Hiba), which regulates and monitors the country’s organ donation programme.

At HMC, we are committed to supporting a robust culture of organ donation and we are seeing the incredible impact that organ donation is having on multiple lives across our country,” explained Dr Yousuf al-Maslamani, director of the Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation.

Some 350,000 donors have registered since the Qatar Organ Donor Registry was launched in 2012.

“The launch of our renal transplant service with Mohamed’s life-saving surgery is an exciting clinical milestone for Sidra Medicine. We are incredibly proud of the collaboration with our peers from HMC and look forward to our continued partnership to improve the health outcomes for patients in Qatar,” added Dr Imam.

Mohamed’s father Taher Hassnein said, “I extend my sincere thanks to the Government of Qatar and its people as well as the medical and administrative staff at Sidra Medicine, HMC and the Hiba centre for organ transplantation for the excellent care my son received. I also want to thank my wife, for donating her kidney to save our son’s life. My faith is that God will grant our son a complete recovery to lead a fulfilling life without the need for renal dialysis or future medical complications.”

أجرى جراحو «سدرة للطب»، المركز التابع لمؤسسة قطر، ومؤسسة حمد الطبية بشكل مشترك أولى جراحات زراعة الكلى من متبرع حي. وتشهد الجراحات أيضاً إطلاق خدمات زراعة الكلى للأطفال في «سدرة للطب». وقد شملت كلا الجراحتين زراعة الكلى من شخص بالغ إلى طفل.

عكف فريق مشترك من «سدرة للطب» ومؤسسة حمد الطبية، على مدى أشهر، على تنظيم جراحتين لزراعة الكلى في طفلين، كل منهما حصل على الكلية من أمه، والتحضير لهما تحت إشراف د. أبو بكر إمام، رئيس قسم أمراض الكلى وارتفاع ضغط الدم لدى الأطفال في سدرة للطب.

وأُجريت أول جراحة بارزة في 14 أبريل 2019. وقد خضع الطفل الثاني لزراعة كلى في 8 مايو 2019 بنجاح.

وأجرى بروفيسور. بيبي سال، رئيس قسم المسالك البولية و د. برونو ليسلي، طبيب المسالك البولية للأطفال في سدرة للطب جراحة محمد (بصفته المتلقي).

وقام د. عمر علي، والبروفيسور بيرنارد جوناس وادستروم، جراحا زراعة الأعضاء بمؤسسة حمد الطبية، باستخلاص كلية والدته (بصفتها المتبرعة) من خلال جراحة تنظيرية، وهو نهج جراحي طفيف التوغل. وقد أجريت الجراحتان تباعًا في «سدرة للطب». ومن جانبه، قال د. عبد الله الكعبي، رئيس الإدارة الطبية في سدرة للطب: «بإمكان عمليات الزراعة الفعالة تغيير العمر المتوقع للمريض وجودة حياته، فالعديد من المرضى يستطيعون ممارسة حياتهم بصورة طبيعية دون الحاجة إلى غسيل كلوي. وقد كان مريضنا الأول محمد محظوظاً للغاية، حيث خضع للجراحة في المؤسسة نفسها، مما وفر وقتًا ثمينًا. فكانت جراحته مثالًا رائعًا على التعاون بين فريقينا هنا في سدرة للطب ومؤسسة حمد الطبية».

وصرّح الدكتور عبد الله الأنصاري، الرئيس الطبي بالوكالة لمؤسسة حمد الطبية، قائلاً: «جاءت هاتان العمليتان الجراحيتان ثمرة للتعاون المستمر بين مؤسسة حمد الطبية وسدرة للطب، وتتويجاً للجهود الكبيرة التي بذلها فريق زراعة الأعضاء متعدد التخصصات، تحت قيادة الدكتور يوسف المسلماني، على مدار عدة أشهر للتخطيط لهذه العمليات المهمة. وترجع خبرة مؤسسة حمد الطبية في مجال زراعة الكلى إلى ما يزيد عن الثلاثين عاماً».
