Qatargas sets world record with Q-Flex transit of Panama Canal

Qatargas has achieved a milestone when ‘Al Safliya’ became the first Q-Flex type LNG vessel, and largest LNG vessel by cargo capacity, to transit the Panama Canal.
The Q-Flex vessel ‘Al Safliya’, with a cargo carrying capacity of 210,000 m3 of LNG, a length of 315m and breadth of 50m, successfully completed the 82km transit on May 12 according to plan, and established the “new world record”.
Commenting on the milestone, HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, who is also the President & CEO of Qatar Petroleum, said: “We are extremely proud of this achievement by Qatargas, which adds yet another benchmark to its capabilities as a safe and reliable LNG company. We wish to congratulate Qatargas and the Panama Canal Authority on achieving this historic milestone. Qatar is committed to enhancing the depth and flexibility of our global LNG supply portfolio even further, and this milestone achievement will undoubtedly lead to future business opportunities.”
Qatargas Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa al-Thani said: “Qatargas has a rich tradition of setting records, and we are very pleased to announce that the ‘Al Safliya’ has successfully transited the Panama Canal. This achievement illustrates our commitment to premier performance and leading the LNG industry. At Qatargas, we continuously strive to innovate and optimise our business to meet the needs of current and future customers.”
This remarkable achievement followed many months of careful planning by Qatargas and the vessel Operator, Pronav Ship Management, as well as close collaboration with the Panama Canal Authority (ACP).
The Panama Canal was expanded in 2016 through the completion of new ‘Neopanamax locks’, thereby allowing LNG vessels to pass through the canal. In April 2018, the ACP announced it would accommodate vessels up to 51.25m wide, opening the prospect for Qatargas’ Q-Flex vessels to transit.
The successful transit of ‘Al Safliya’ through the Panama Canal creates future triangulation opportunities for the 31 Qatari Q-Flex vessels, allowing them to discharge cargoes in the Pacific Basin and then proceed to the Atlantic basin to load their next cargo, a Qatargas release said.
أعلنت «قطر غاز» -الشركة الرائدة في مجال صناعة الغاز الطبيعي المسال في العالم- عن إنجاز تاريخي عندما أصبحت «السافلية» -أول ناقلة للغاز الطبيعي المسال من طراز «كيو فليكس» (Q-FLEX) وأكبرها من حيث سعة الحمولة- تعبر قناة بنما.
تبلغ قدرة حمولة «السافلية» الإجمالية 210 آلاف متر مكعب من الغاز الطبيعي المسال، كما يبلغ طولها 315 متراً وعرضها 50 متراً. وقد أكملت «السافلية» رحلة العبور بنجاح في 12 مايو 2019، بمسافة بلغت 82 كيلومتراً، وفقاً للبرنامج الزمني المحدد، محققة رقماً قياسياً عالمياً
جديداً.
وتعليقاً على هذا الإنجاز، قال سعادة المهندس سعد بن شريده الكعبي وزير الدولة لشؤون الطاقة العضو المنتدب والرئيس التنفيذي لـ «قطر للبترول»: «نحن فخورون جداً بهذا الإنجاز لـ (قطرغاز)، والذي يضيف معياراً جديداً إلى قدراتها بوصفها شركة غاز طبيعي مسال موثوقة وآمنة. ويسعدني أن أهنئ (قطرغاز) وهيئة قناة بنما على تحقيق هذا الإنجاز التاريخي.
إن قطر ملتزمة بتوسيع قدراتها ومرونتها في تسليم الغاز الطبيعي المسال إلى نطاق أوسع وإلى أكبر عدد من العملاء في أنحاء العالم، وبلا شك فإن هذا الإنجاز المهم سيفتح المجال أمام مزيد من الفرص التجارية الجديدة».
إنجازات بارزة
وقال الشيخ خالد بن خليفة آل ثاني، الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة قطرغاز: «يوجد لدى (قطرغاز) سجل حافل بإنجازات بارزة غير مسبوقة. والآن يسرّنا أن نعلن أن ناقلة الغاز (السافلية) عبرت قناة بنما بنجاح. ويوضّح هذا الإنجاز المهم مدى التزامنا بالأداء المتميّز والريادة في مجال صناعة الغاز الطبيعي المسال على مستوى العالم. ونحن في (قطرغاز) نسعى باستمرار إلى الابتكار وتحسين أدائنا؛ لتلبية احتياجات عملائنا الحاليين والمستقبليين».
هذا، وقد جاء هذا الإنجاز بعد عدة شهور من التخطيط الدقيق من قِبل شركة قطرغاز ومشغّل الناقلة شركة «بروناف شيب مانجمنت» (Pronav Ship management)، بالإضافة إلى تعاون وثيق مع هيئة قناة بنما.
يُذكر أنه قد تم توسيع قناة بنما عام 2016، من خلال استكمال «أقفال نيوبنماكس» (Neopanamax Locks) الجديدة؛ مما يسمح لناقلات الغاز الطبيعي المسال كبيرة الحجم بالمرور عبر القناة. وقد أعلنت هيئة قناة بنما في أبريل 2018 أنها ستستوعب السفن التي يصل عرضها إلى 51.25 متر؛ مما فتح المجال أمام ناقلات «كيو فليكس» التابعة لـ «قطرغاز».
عبور «السافلية» الناجح عبر قناة بنما الجديدة يتيح في المستقبل فرص زيادة المرونة لناقلات «كيو فليكس» القطرية الإحدى والثلاثين، بتسليم الشحنات إلى أكثر من زبون في سواحل المحيط الهادي، ثم الانتقال إلى المحيط الأطلسي لتحميل حمولتها التالية.
