Sidra Medicine to host free epilepsy workshop for school nurses

DOHA: Sidra Medicine will host free workshops as part of an Epilepsy Awareness Day for school nurses and care givers on Wednesday.
Organised by the Pediatric Neurology Division at Sidra Medicine, the workshops in English and Arabic, are aimed at educating school nurses and care givers about caring for students with epilepsy.
The workshop is also open to health care providers interested in epilepsy among school age children as well as primary care nurses.
Epilepsy is a condition that affects the brain and causes repeated seizures. As a result, cells in the brain get disrupted during a seizure causing the body to behave in an unusual way.
Workshop organiser and attending Physician in Neurology, Dr Rana Al Shami, said, “Children with epilepsy should be able to enjoy the same opportunities at school as any other student.
We encourage schools in Qatar to send their nurses and care givers to the three hour workshops. They have been designed to ensure that school nurses are given the right information about students with epilepsy who are under their care and supervision.
Each child will have different needs and we have a segment related to instructions on giving appropriate first aid or emergency medicine if they have a seizure at school.”
Workshop in Arabic will be held on Wednesday between 8am and 11 and the English session from 12 noon to 3pm at the Sidra Auditorium in the main hospital.
سيستضيف سدرة للطب، الأربعاء المقبل، ورشة عمل مجانية، كجزء من فعاليات يوم التوعية بمرض الصرع للممرضات ومقدمي الرعاية في المدارس. تهدف ورشة العمل، التي ينظّمها قسم طب الأعصاب للأطفال في سدرة للطب باللغتين الإنجليزية والعربية، إلى تثقيف الممرضات ومقدمي الرعاية في المدارس بشأن رعاية الطلاب المصابين بالصرع. كما ترحّب ورشة العمل أيضًا بمشاركة مقدمي الرعاية الصحية المهتمين بمرض الصرع لدى الأطفال في سن المدرسة، فضلاً عن ممرضات الرعاية الأولية.
يُعد الصرع حالة مرضيّة تؤثر على الدماغ، وتسبب نوبات تشنج متكررة. ونتيجة لذلك، يحدث خلل لخلايا المخ أثناء نوبة التشنج، مما يتسبب في تصرُّف الجسم بطريقة غير معتادة.
وقالت الدكتورة رنا الشامي، المسؤولة عن تنظيم ورشة العمل والطبيبة المعالجة في قسم طب الأعصاب: «يجب أن يتمتع الأطفال المصابون بالصرع بنفس الفرص المتاحة للطلاب الآخرين في المدارس. ونحن نشجع المدارس في قطر على إرسال ممرضاتهم ومقدمي الرعاية لديهم لحضور ورشة العمل التي تستغرق ثلاث ساعات. لقد صُممت ورشة العمل لضمان حصول ممرضات المدارس على المعلومات الصحيحة بشأن الطلاب المصابين بالصرع والخاضعين لرعايتهن وإشرافهن».
