Bayt Aman hosted 20 expats since opening

Two years after opening, Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Bayt Aman is continuing to support expatriate labourers who have been released from hospital and are awaiting return to their home country.

Since opening in June 2016, Bayt Aman has hosted 20 residents, with nine successfully discharged and safely returned to their home countries, HMC said in a statement.

“The expatriate workers who are cared for at Bayt Aman no longer need the high-level of clinical supervision that is provided at HMC’s rehabilitation and long-term care units; but they do require some support. The majority of these individuals have sustained a traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury or injuries to multiple body parts and organ systems. While they have recovered from a serious injury and are clinically well enough to leave the hospital or a long-term care facility, they still require support. At Bayt Aman, we are able to provide them with this extra support and assistance,” said Dr Wafa al-Yazeedi, chairperson, Qatar Rehabilitation Institute (QRI).

Located in the Al Thumama area, Bayt Aman can accommodate up to 12 guests at any given time, with most residents spending several months at the facility before returning to their home country. Established in collaboration with Qatar Building Company, Bayt Aman provides safe and accessible accommodation for workers with disabilities who are awaiting repatriation to their home country, the statement notes.

“Some patients discharged from HMC hospitals no longer need hospital-based care but they are not yet ready to return home due to the severity of their injury or the unsuitability of their accommodation. Bayt Aman is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and was created with the vision of providing a space for discharged expatriate labourers to fully recuperate and re-adjust to their daily routine,” explained Mahmoud Saleh al-Raisi, chief, Continuing Care Group.

Dr Nasser al-Nabit, executive director (business development), Continuing Care Group, who oversees operations at Bayt Aman, said that guests of the facility are outpatients, with many receiving follow-up rehabilitation services at QRI on an outpatient basis. “While the facility is staffed by a charge nurse and patient care attendants, residents are encouraged to be independent,” he said.

“Our residents are considered outpatients with our facility acting as assisted-living accommodations. Patients are encouraged to be as independent as possible, particularly in terms of their daily self-care activities,” said Dr al-Nabit.

Calling Bayt Aman a safe and restorative environment for expatriate workers who have completed medical treatment and are waiting to return home, Dr al-Nabit says staff at the facility are focused on helping residents who have completed their medical treatment to fully recuperate and adjust to what may be a new normal routine.

“While waiting to be cleared for travel back to their home country, residents at Bayt Aman are kept busy by engaging in activities such as exercising, painting, cooking, taking care of plants, or socialising with visitors. Staff regularly organise events for our residents, such as painting classes recently held in collaboration with artists from the International Artists Doha,” added Dr al-Nabit.

Dr al-Nabit expressed gratitude to the National Human Rights Committee, Ministry of Interior and Jassim and Hamad Bin Jassim Charitable Foundation for their support in facilitating the safe repatriation of the nine former residents who have returned to their home countries.

وقالت الدكتورة وفاء اليزيدي- رئيس مركز قطر لإعادة التأهيل-: «لا يحتاج العمال الوافدون الذين نستقبلهم في «بيت أمان» إلى الإقامة في المستشفى للحصول على الرعاية والإشراف الطبي الذي تقدمه وحدات الرعاية المطوّلة وإعادة التأهيل في مؤسسة حمد الطبية، ولكنهم لا يزالون بحاجة إلى بعض الدعم والمساندة؛ لافته إلي أن غالبية نزلاء «بيت أمان» هم مرضى تعرضوا لإصابات في الدماغ أو العمود الفقري، أو لإصابات متعددة في أجزاء وأعضاء مختلفة من الجسم ناتجة عن تعرضهم لحوادث، إلا أنهم وبعد شفائهم من إصاباتهم البليغة وتقييم أوضاعهم الصحية بأنهم بحالة تسمح لهم بمغادرة المستشفى أو وحدة الرعاية المطوّلة التي يقيمون فيها، فإنهم يكونون لا يزالون بحاجة إلى الدعم. ولذلك فإننا نقوم في «بيت أمان» بتوفير الدعم والمساندة لهؤلاء المرضى».

وحول الهدف من إنشاء «بيت أمان» وطبيعة الحالات التي يستقبلها، قال السيد محمود صالح الرئيسي- رئيس مجموعة الخدمات الطبية المستمرة بمؤسسة حمد الطبية: «تم تجهيز «بيت أمان» لاستقبال العمال الذين يسمح لهم بمغادرة مستشفيات المؤسسة ولم يعودوا بحاجة إلى الحصول على مزيد من الرعاية في المستشفى، إلا أنهم لا يكونون جاهزين تماماً للعودة إلى منازلهم بسبب عدم وجود التجهيزات اللازمة في منازلهم التي تتناسب مع حدة الإصابة التي تعرضوا لها وحالاتهم الصحية؛ حيث يتواجد في «بيت أمان» موظفون متخصصون على مدار الساعة وطوال أيام الأسبوع لتقديم الدعم للنزلاء. إن الهدف الرئيسي من تأسيس هذا المرفق هو توفير مساحة مناسبة للعمال الوافدين الذين يغادرون المستشفى للتعافي بشكل كامل، واستعادة قدرتهم على ممارسة أنشطة حياتهم اليومية».

وأوضح الدكتور ناصر النابت- المدير التنفيذي لتطوير الأعمال بمجموعة الخدمات الطبية المستمرة والمشرف المسؤول عن «بيت أمان»- أن الكثير من نزلاء المركز يواصلون حضور مواعيد المتابعة الطبية كمرضى خارجيين في عيادات إعادة التأهيل بمركز قطر لإعادة التأهيل.

وأشار الدكتور النابت إلى أنه وعلى الرغم من تواجد كوادر تمريضية وكوادر مساعدة لكوادر التمريض بالمركز طوال الوقت، فإنهم يشجعون النزلاء دائماً على محاولة الاعتماد بشكل أكبر على أنفسهم والعيش باستقلالية وممارسة أنشطتهم اليومية بشكل طبيعي قدر الإمكان لمساعدتهم على العودة بشكل تدريجي إلى حياتهم الطبيعية.

وأضاف النابت : «يعتبر المرضى الذين نستقبلهم في «بيت أمان» مرضى خارجيون أي أنهم لا يحتاجون إلى الإقامة في المستشفى، ويعمل مركز «بيت أمان» بمثابة مرفق سكني مجهز لاستقبال هؤلاء المرضى بما يتناسب مع حالاتهم الصحية؛ حيث يتميز ببيئته الآمنة والهادئة التي تساعد النزلاء من العمال الوافدين على استكمال مراحل التعافي والتأهيل قبل العودة لبلادهم، مشيراً إلى أن الموظفين في هذا المرفق يبذلون أقصى جهودهم لمساعدة النزلاء على التعافي بشكل كامل والتأقلم مع وضعهم الصحي الجديد وممارسة أنشطة حياتهم اليومية بشكل طبيعي والاعتناء بأنفسهم».;
