Doha: The Earth has experienced a new record-breaking average temperature, marking the third occurrence within a week and earning the title of the hottest temperature ever recorded. According to a prominent scientist quoted by the Associated Press, this week may be the hottest in the past 120,000 years.
On Thursday, the average temperature surpassed the previously set mark of 17.18 degrees Celsius, which was determined on Tuesday and matched on Wednesday. This data comes from the “Climate Analysis Indicator Tool” at the University of Maine, which utilizes satellite data and computer simulations to measure global temperatures.
Notably, for the past 44 years, the 17-degree Celsius threshold had not been exceeded in any records. However, the average temperature for the week ending on Thursday reached a new high of 17.23 degrees Celsius.
Johan Rockström, the director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, described the 17-degree mark as an “exception,” indicating that the Earth has become warmer than the average over the past 12,000 years.
In response to these extreme temperatures, experts warn of potentially hazardous events, including floods, droughts, heatwaves, and storms.
Michael Mann, a climate scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, stated, “It is certain that the past few days and the previous week have been the warmest on a global scale in the past 120,000 years.”
Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist from the “Berkeley Earth” temperature monitoring organization, added that it would not be surprising if this week’s weather turns out to be the warmest in 120,000 years. However, he cautioned that long-term measurements are not always precise.
The average temperature for this week encompasses locations with extreme heat, such as Jingxing, China, where a temperature of 43.3 degrees Celsius was recorded. Additionally, temperatures in the Antarctic Peninsula were 4.5 degrees Celsius above the normal average this week, according to the U.S.-based Alhurra TV network.
Moreover, on Thursday, Adrar, Algeria experienced extremely high temperatures, with the mercury never dropping below 39.6 degrees Celsius, even during the night when temperatures typically decrease. Weather historian and climate scientist Maximiliano Herrera noted that this was the highest recorded nocturnal minimum in Africa to date.
