Doha: The Financial Times speculates about Qatar’s plans after hosting the 2022 World Cup, recognizing the country’s limitless ambitions in hosting major events and attracting knowledge-based investments. The newspaper reveals discussions regarding Qatar’s potential bid to host the 2036 Olympics.

In its report, the newspaper acknowledges that while the jubilant football fans have left the streets, the memories of Qatar’s hosting of the global event still linger in Doha after seven months. The report emphasizes the presence of magnificent stadiums that hosted the previous World Cup, some of which will be downsized or repurposed for new ventures. It highlights the concept of “legacy,” suggesting the transformation of these stadiums into wedding venues, shopping centers, or hotel complexes.

The report describes the transformed Corniche, once a fan zone during the tournament, with advertisements promoting the global football festival still on display. Additionally, a sculpture of the 2022 FIFA World Cup stands overlooking the Gulf, while sailboats glide through the calm waters.

The Financial Times suggests that Qatar is determined to hold onto the landmarks of the tournament and is contemplating how to export the success of becoming the first Arab or Islamic country to host such a significant sports event. The newspaper notes that Qataris tend to focus on the next stage of development rather than dwelling on the past. There is a desire to establish a “knowledge-based economy” and play a role in solving international problems. Hosting the 2036 Olympics is also under discussion.

According to the newspaper, over the past 12 years, the preparations for the World Cup have consumed a considerable amount of attention in Qatar. The country has developed its infrastructure, addressed allegations regarding workers’ rights, and overcome regional challenges, turning Doha into a bustling construction site. With the completion of the latest metro lines, highways, hotels, and residential towers, the report suggests that only a few construction sites remain, indicating a shift towards the next phase of development.

وتقول الصحيفة – في تقرير لها – “على الرغم من أن حشود مشجعي كرة القدم المبتهجين اختفت من الشوارع، إلا أن ما يذكر دولة قطر بلحظات استضافتها للحدث العالمي مازالت تنتشر في الدوحة بعد سبعة أشهر من كأس العالم”.

وتوضح: هناك الملاعب الرائعة التي استضافت كأس العالم العام الماضي، والتي ينتظر بعضها إما تقليص حجمها أو إعادة توظيفها في مجالات جديدة، لافتة إلى “الإرث” الذي ستتركه الملاعب وتوظيفها كمجمع لحفلات زفاف أو مراكز التسوق أو مجمعات للفنادق.

وتضيف: على طول الكورنيش الذي تم تحويله إلى منطقة للمشجعين خلال البطولة، لا تزال لوحات الإعلان التي تروج للمهرجان الكروي العالمي القدم في مكانها، كما أن هناك منحوتة كأس العالم لكرة القدم 2022 تطل على الخليج، بينما تبحر المراكب الشراعية على مياه الخليج الهادئة.

ووفق الصحيفة، فعلى مدار 12 عاماً، استحوذت الاستعدادات لكأس العالم على الكثير من تركيز الدولة الخليجية التي طورت البنية التحتية، وتخلصت من مزاعم بشأن العمال وكذلك تخطت التحديات الإقليمية، وأصبحت الدوحة موقع بناء عملاق يعج بالنشاط.

وتابعت: اليوم، ومع استكمال أحدث خطوط المترو والطرق السريعة والفنادق والأبراج السكنية، لم يتبق سوى عدد قليل من جيوب البناء، تتدلى الرافعات المنفردة فوق المباني التي تنتظر الانتهاء، وخفف الازدحام.. لتعود لتساؤلها المستقبلي وماذا بعد؟

تحد اقتصادي

يقول المحللون – بحسب الصحيفة – إن التحدي يكمن في تجنب التراخي وإقناع المستثمرين الأجانب بأن الدولة يجب أن تكون وجهة استثمارية مفضلة بالنسبة لهم.

ونقلت الصحيفة عن معالي الشيخ محمد بن عبد الرحمن آل ثاني، رئيس مجلس الوزراء ووزير الخارجية – في تصريحات سابقة – إن “كأس العالم بداية وليست نهاية”
