Qatar Plays a Key Role in Enhancing Heathrow Airport’s Position

Doha: The Evening Standard recently published a report revealing the appointment of Danish executive Thomas Waldeby as the new CEO of Heathrow Airport, effective from the end of September. The search for a new leader for Europe’s busiest airport was endorsed by all the stakeholders, including the Spanish Ferrovial Group and the Qatar Investment Authority, which readily accepted the proposal due to Thomas Waldeby’s excellent reputation. He is expected to make a significant contribution to strengthening the airport in various aspects during the upcoming phase. Waldeby has previously succeeded in transforming and improving the conditions at Copenhagen Airport, significantly increasing its visitor numbers in the past eight years and now welcoming over 30 million passengers annually since 2022.

The report highlighted Qatar’s substantial role in enhancing Heathrow’s position as one of the busiest airports in Western Europe. Qatar has continuously participated in the airport’s development projects, including the approved third phase that resumed after resolving the legal issues that temporarily halted the expansion project due to a ruling by the UK Supreme Court. The report emphasized the significant benefits that these ongoing works, estimated to cost £14 billion and extend until 2028, would bring to London’s capital airport from all perspectives. These benefits include improving regular travel operations within the airport and towards various destinations worldwide, as well as facilitating commercial activities through diverse cargo shipments to continents worldwide.

Multiple Investments

The report revealed that Qatar is among the investors in London. Apart from the stakes held by the Qatar Sovereign Wealth Fund in various projects, Qatar has significant real estate investments in the British capital. The Qatari investments in London amount to approximately $17 billion, with the Qatar Investment Authority partnering with Ascott Group. This collaboration has enabled Doha to acquire several projects, including the Citadines Apart hotel in April 2016, and most recently, the acquisition of The Ritz hotel for £800 million. These investments demonstrate that London is one of the top European capitals attracting Qatari capital.
