Expo 2023 Doha and GORD Sign Agreement to Support Sustainably

Doha: The Organizing Committee of the International Horticultural Expo 2023 Doha Qatar signed an agreement with the Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD), with an aim to provide the necessary needs to support Expo 2023’s sustainable aspect.

The signing ceremony was held at the Expo Pavilion at the Doha International Book Fair in DEC Center, and in the presence of Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Exhibition and Director of the Public Parks Department at the Ministry of Municipality Mr. Mohammed Ali Al Khoury and Chairman of GORD Dr. Yousef bin Mohammed Al Horr.

According to the agreement, GORD will supervise various aspects of planning and implementation of the event, supervising the installation and dismantling operations, as well as handling the legacy of Expo 2023 after its conclusion. An integral part of GORD’s role will be providing technical support to the working teams of the event and to make sure they comply with the requirements of the GSAS EcoLeaf certification for exhibitions and festivals.

GSAS EcoLeaf is a new certificate revealed by GORD which follows the global system for sustainability assessment to enhance sustainability and environmental performance during major events, and is aimed to reduce the carbon footprint of temporary facilities, while ensuring the safety and well-being of people and protecting the environment.

GORD will also contribute in creating a sustainability strategy and legacy plan for Expo 2023, and then provide a detailed plan for an effective implementation of the strategy. In addition to developing education in the field of sustainability, communication and participation plans, and preparing management system reports, the organization will also present reports on sustainability performance pre and post Expo 2023.

Through GORD, Expo 2023 Doha is aiming to fulfill its commitment of leaving a long-lasting positive impact on the environment and the future of sustainable event management.

Mr. Mohammed Ali Al Khoury said that sustainability has always been part of Expo 2023, and the organizing committee has been aiming to align its actions and initiatives with the vision of a greener future. He noted that to achieve this goal, cooperation with the most prominent experts in the field of sustainability, such as GORD, is a pivotal step, especially with the organization’s experience and commitment to environmental sustainability, which reflects positively on the event and allows to provide a unique sustainable experience.

He added that the committee is looking forward to organize an event that will have an impact of the efforts made to address the effects of climate change, and sets an example to follow and reference.

Dr. Yousef bin Mohammed Al Horr said that the organization of Expo 2023 Doha is a strategic step that allows focusing on the crucial role of sustainability and green initiatives, which also aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030. He stressed that GORD feels pride in participating in supporting the organizers of Expo 2023 and help implement the sustainability requirements that had been set by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH).

He pointed out that this cooperation makes this event an opportunity to address climate challenges, and to also enable and inspire future organizations and events to follow the best practices that will be applied in Expo 2023 Doha.
International Horticultural Expo 2023 Doha is an international horticultural exhibition held in the Middle East and North Africa region. The event, under the slogan “Green Desert, Better Environment”, aims to inspire and introduce people to innovative solutions aimed at reducing desertification and limiting its effects. Expo 2023 Doha will be held from October 2, 2023 to March 28, 2024, during the mild winter season and on a 170 hectares area.

The Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD) is a non-profit organization and the forefront in the sustainability field in the Middle East and North Africa region. الدوحة: وقعت اللجنة المنظمة لمعرض “إكسبو 2023 الدوحة للبستنة”، اتفاقية مع المنظمة الخليجية للبحث والتطوير (جورد)، توفر الأخيرة بموجبها الدعم اللازم لدعم الجانب المستدام من إكسبو 2023 الدوحة.

وقد أقيم حفل التوقيع في جناح إكسبو في معرض الدوحة الدولي للكتاب في مركز الدوحة للمعارض والمؤتمرات، وذلك بحضور السيد محمد علي الخوري، الأمين العام لإكسبو 2023 الدوحة ومدير إدارة الحدائق العامة بوزارة البلدية، والدكتور يوسف بن محمد الحر، رئيس مجلس إدارة المنظمة الخليجية للبحث والتطوير.

وبحسب الاتفاقية، سوف تشرف المنظمة الخليجية للبحث والتطوير على جوانب مختلفة من التخطيط والتنفيذ، بالإضافة إلى إشرافها على عمليات التركيب والتفكيك والإرث الذي سيخلفه الإكسبو بعد اختتام فعالياته. وسيتمثل جزء أساسي من دور المنظمة في تقديم الدعم الفني لفرق عمل إكسبو 2023 الدوحة للامتثال لمتطلبات شهادة جي ساس “Ecoleaf” للمعارض والمهرجانات وهي شهادة جديدة كشفت عنها المنظمة الخليجية للبحث والتطوير ضمن إطار المنظومة العالمية لتقييم الاستدامة لتعزيز الاستدامة والأداء البيئي خلال الفعاليات الكبرى حيث تهدف الشهادة إلى الحد من البصمة الكربونية للمرافق المؤقتة، مع ضمان سلامة ورفاهية المستخدمين وحماية البيئة.

وبالإضافة إلى تطبيق معايير شهادة جي ساس “Ecoleaf”، ستساهم المنظمة في صياغة استراتيجية الاستدامة وخطة إرث الإكسبو، يتبعها خطة مفصلة لتطبيق الاستدامة لتوفير خارطة طريق للتنفيذ الفعال للاستراتيجية. وإلى جانب تطوير التعليم في مجال الاستدامة وخطط التواصل والمشاركة وإعداد تقارير نظام الإدارة، ستقوم المنظمة الخليجية للبحث والتطوير أيضاً بتقديم تقارير حول أداء الاستدامة في المعرض ما قبل الإكسبو وبعده.

ويعمل معرض إكسبو 2023 الدوحة من خلال التعاون مع المنظمة الخليجية للبحث والتطوير، على الإيفاء بالتزامه بترك أثر إيجابي دائم على البيئة ومستقبل إدارة الفعاليات المستدامة.

وتعليقا على انضمام المنظمة إلى معرض البستنة الدولي، قال السيد محمد علي الخوري، الأمين العام لإكسبو 2023 الدوحة ومدير إدارة الحدائق العامة بوزارة البلدية: “لطالما كانت الاستدامة في تنظيم إكسبو 2023 الدوحة وحرصنا على توافق أعمالنا ومبادراتنا مع رؤيتنا لمستقبل أكثر اخضرارا في صميم جهودنا”، مشيرا إلى أنه لتحقيق هذا الهدف الطموح يأتي التعاون مع أبرز الخبراء في مجال الاستدامة، مثل المنظمة الخليجية للبحث والتطوير، كخطوة هامة في هذا الشأن، خاصة مع تمتع المنظمة بالخبرة والتزامها بالاستدامة البيئية مما ينعكس إيجابياً على المعرض، ويسمح لنا بتقديم تجربة مستدامة فريدة من نوعها.

وأضاف “نتطلع إلى تنظيم فعالية تترك أثراً في مساعي معالجة آثار التغير المناخي، وتشكل مثالاً يقتدى به ومرجعاً يشار إليه بالبنان”.

من جهته قال الدكتور يوسف الحر، رئيس مجلس إدارة المنظمة الخليجية للبحث والتطوير: “يعتبر تنظيم إكسبو 2023 الدوحة خطوة استراتيجية تسمح بالتركيز على الدور الحاسم التي تضطلع به الاستدامة والمبادرات الخضراء بما يتماشى مع رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030، مؤكدا اعتزاز المنظمة بالمشاركة في دعم منظمي إكسبو 2023 ومساعدتهم على تنفيذ متطلبات الاستدامة التي كانت قد وضعتها الرابطة الدولية لمنتجي البستنة.

وأشار أن هذا التعاون يجعل هذا الحدث فرصة للتصدي للتحديات المناخية من جهة، وتمكين المنظمات والفعاليات المستقبلية وإلهامها لاتباع أفضل الممارسات التي سيطبقها إكسبو 2023 الدوحة.” جدير بالذكر أن «إكسبو 2023 الدوحة، قطر» معرض دولي للبستنة يقام في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا. ويهدف الإكسبو الذي يحمل شعار «صحراء خضراء، بيئة أفضل» إلى إلهام الناس وتعريفهم بالحلول المبتكرة الرامية إلى التخفيف من حدة التصحر والحد من آثاره. وسيفتح «إكسبو 2023 الدوحة» أبوابه في 2 أكتوبر 2023 ويستمر لمدة 179 يوماً خلال فصل الشتاء معتدل الحرارة على مساحة 170 هكتاراً، حتى اختتامه في 28 مارس 2024.

أما المنظمة الخليجية للبحث والتطوير فهي منظمة غير ربحية تتصدر مسيرة الاستدامة في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا. ويقع مقرها في واحة قطر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا، التي تقود بدورها التحول في المجتمعات والصناعات والبيئة المبنية من خلال التأثير على الشركات، وتعزيز الابتكار، وتطوير القدرات لتمكين النمو المستدام منخفض الكربون للأجيال الحالية والقادمة.
