Qatar Economic Forum.. Experts Praise Qatar’s Experience in Biomedicine

Doha: In a session on “Disrupting Healthcare: The Radical Changes Shaping the Biomedical Industry” held within the activities of the ongoing Qatar Economic Forum in Doha, a number of experts, researchers and academics praised the Qatari experience and the steps taken by the countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf in advancing the field of biomedicine and attracting the latest relevant technologies.

The session’s speakers attributed this to the optimal use of physical and human capital in attracting companies operating in this field and stimulating the private sector to invest in it, stressing that this region can play a major and pioneering role in the development of biomedical technology building on its network of relations with developed Western countries in this area.

Stressing the importance of cooperation, teamwork, and the exchange of experiences and information about diseases to facilitate the process of discovering them and benefiting from technology in providing effective and rapid treatments for them, they said that the twenty-first century is the “century of biomedicine” because of the ability to discover new treatments for intractable diseases and improve health care and developing it through innovation and scientific discoveries in the areas of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the population. Despite the beginning of reliance on biomedicine many years ago, progress in it still requires greater effort and more focus in order to bear the desired fruits with the need to harness technology in this sector to accelerate its growth and development, they noted.
Touching on the importance of stem cell laboratories and genome technology in developing new biomarkers, diagnostic and therapeutic solutions, facilitating early diagnosis and treatment of diseases, managing specific diseases, and improving personalized medicine and health care, the speakers noted the necessity of establishing partnerships with prestigious national and international institutions, transcending geographical borders and facing various medical challenges along with attracting eminent scientists to transform research into medical practices faster and more efficiently, and making use of innovation and modern genetic technologies.

The speakers also expressed their admiration for the adoption of genome projects in the Gulf countries, the free health care network that covers the entire population, the large investment in research infrastructure, genetic research efforts in them and the focus on capacity building at the national level, stressing that these new projects can achieve a major qualitative transformation in health care in the region.

The participants also noted the important and vital role of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating new treatments and accelerating the discovery of medicines and vaccines for incurable diseases, including the Coronavirus, as the use of technology, modern devices and innovative algorithms had the greatest role in producing vaccinations for this virus in huge quantities and eliminating it in record time. They called for a long-term global plan that will be gradually implemented based on cooperation, sharing and exchanging experiences and information across borders, and innovating AI-based devices to overcome health challenges and incurable diseases facing people around the world.

الدوحة: أشاد عدد من الخبراء والباحثين والأكاديميين المشاركين في جلسة “تعطيل الرعاية الصحية: التغيرات الجذرية التي تشكل صناعة الطب الحيوي”، التي عقدت ضمن فعاليات منتدى قطر الاقتصادي الذي يقام حاليا في الدوحة، بالتجربة القطرية، وبالخطوات التي اتخذتها دول مجلس التعاون لدول الخليج العربية بشكل عام في النهوض بمجال الطب الحيوي، واستقطاب أحدث التكنولوجيات المرتبطة به.

وأرجع المتحدثون في الجلسة ذلك إلى الاستخدام الأمثل لرأس المال المادي والبشري في استقطاب الشركات العاملة في هذا المجال، وتحفيز القطاع الخاص على الاستثمار فيه، مؤكدين أن هذه المنطقة يمكن أن تلعب دورا كبيرا ورائدا في تطوير تكنولوجيا الطب الحيوي اعتمادا على شبكة علاقاتها مع الدول الغربية المتقدمة في هذا المجال.

وشدد المتحدثون على أهمية التعاون والعمل الجماعي وتبادل الخبرات والمعلومات حول الأمراض لتسهيل عملية اكتشافها والاستفادة من التكنولوجيا في توفير علاجات ناجعة وسريعة لها، مؤكدين أن القرن الحادي والعشرين هو “قرن الطب الحيوي” لما له من قدرة على: اكتشاف علاجات جديدة لأمراض مستعصية وتحسين الرعاية الصحية وتطويرها من خلال الابتكار، واكتشافات علمية في مجالات الوقاية والتشخيص وعلاج الأمراض التي تؤثر على السكان، مشيرين في الوقت ذاته إلى أنه رغم بداية الاعتماد على الطب الحيوي قبل أعوام طويلة إلا أن التقدم فيه لا يزال يحتاج إلى جهد أكبر وتركيز أكثر حتى يؤتي ثماره المرجوة مع ضرورة تسخير التكنولوجيا في هذا القطاع للإسراع بنموه وتطوره.

وتطرق المتحدثون إلى أهمية مختبرات الخلايا الجذعية، وتكنولوجيا الجينوم، في تطوير مؤشرات حيوية جديدة وحلول تشخيصية وعلاجية وتسهيل التشخيص المبكر للأمراض وعلاجها وإدارة أمراض محددة وتحسين الطب الشخصي والرعاية الصحية، منوهين بضرورة عقد شراكات مع مؤسسات وطنية وعالمية مرموقة، وتجاوز الحدود الجغرافية ومجابهة التحديات الطبية المختلفة. واستقطاب العلماء البارزين لتحويل الأبحاث إلى ممارسات طبية بشكل أسرع وأكثر كفاءة والمزج بين الابتكار والاستفادة من التقنيات الجينية الحديثة.

كما أعرب المتحدثون في الجلسة عن إعجابهم بتبني مشاريع الجينوم في دول الخليج وشبكة الرعاية الصحية المجانية التي تغطي جميع السكان والاستثمار الكبير في البنية التحتية البحثية، وجهود البحث الوراثي فيها والتركيز على بناء القدرات على المستوى الوطني، مؤكدين أن بوسع هذه المشاريع الجديدة تحقيق تحول نوعي كبير في الرعاية الصحية بالمنطقة.

ونوه المشاركون في الجلسة إلى الدور الهام والحيوي للذكاء الاصطناعي في ابتكار علاجات جديدة والإسراع باكتشاف أدوية ولقاحات لأمراض مستعصية ومنها فيروس كورونا، حيث كان لاستعمال التكنولوجيا والأجهزة الحديثة والخوارزميات المبتكرة الدور الأكبر في إنتاج تطعيمات لهذا الفيروس بكميات هائلة والقضاء عليه في وقت قياسي، داعين إلى ضرورة تبني خطة عالمية طويلة الأمد يتم تنفيذها تدريجيا تعتمد على التعاون والتشارك وتبادل الخبرات والمعلومات عبر الحدود وابتكار أجهزة تعتمد على الذكاء الاصطناعي للتغلب على التحديات الصحية والأمراض المستعصية التي تواجه البشر حول العالم.
