Qatar Museums Inaugurates Olafur Eliasson’s the Curious Desert Exhibition

Doha: HE Chairperson of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani inaugurated the curious desert, a new exhibition conceived by Olafur Eliasson for a site in the desert outside of Al Thakhira Mangrove Reserve.

The exhibition includes new site-specific works that continue to explore the Icelandic-Danish artists abiding interests in light and colour, geometric studies, ecological awareness and more-than-human relationships.

The exhibition is presented as part of Qatar Creates, the year-round national cultural movement that curates, promotes, and celebrates the diversity of cultural activities in Qatar.

HE Chairperson of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani said in a statement on the ocassion: “The curious desert by Olafur Eliasson illustrates the power and problem-solving ability of art. Olafurs profound body of work, including the new installations in the Qatari desert, opens an important dialogue about the environment, one of the most pressing topics of our time, in the context of our nations natural landscapes.” Her Excellency added: “This exhibition is unique in its presentation, which exists both inside and outside of the National Museum of Qatar, to further demonstrate how art is not confined to galleries, but is around us, everywhere, to inspire and educate.” For his part, Artist Olafur Eliasson said: “It is an extraordinary opportunity to create artworks for the sabkha near Al Thakhira Mangrove Reserve. The sun, the wind, the nearby lagoon saltwater they all help co-produce the artworks that visitors will encounter here. I hope the artworks in turn may sensitise people to the singular landscape and to the more-than-human agencies at work. The other half of my exhibition, at the National Museum of Qatar, is an assembly of embodied thoughts and actions from over 25 years of working as an artist. These two natural and cultural sites enrich each other together they make up The curious desert.” During the media tour in the exhibition, Head of Exhibitions Department at the National Museum of Qatar Buthaina El Beltagy explained that the exhibition is located in a sabkha habitat some 64 kilometres northeast of Doha, near the Al Thakhira Mangrove Reserve, where twelve temporary pavilions enclose a series of new, experimental artworks that respond to the ephemeral natural phenomena of the local environment, such as sunlight, wind and water.

The first three outdoor pavilions explore optical phenomena, making use of rainbows, shadows and mirrors to create mesmerizing effects, while pavilions five through seven contain innovative drawing machines that enlist the elements of the sabkha habitat to create artworks that will later be displayed within the exhibition at the National Museum of Qatar.

The final three pavilions bring this environment into dialogue with others, with materials such as obsidian and glacial mud from Iceland.

Among the projects located in the twelve desert pavilions are: Rainbow incubator 11 prisms, arranged along the top of a reflective sphere according to the path of the sun at Al Thakhira, bend and break the daylight entering the sphere, causing it to appear at different times of the year as a perfectly circular rainbow.

Saltwater-drawing observatory Two circular canvases one white and the other black turn slowly on motors as water, mixed with black and white pigments respectively, drips down onto the spinning surfaces. The wind causes the drawing utensil to move across the surface of the turning page, leaving undulating marks upon the surface. The drawings, portraits of the weather conditions at the location, are then periodically shown at The National Museum of Qatar.

Solar incense burner A single glass sphere uses the rays of the sun to ignite a selection of scents typical of Qatar and the region oud, musk, and amber, among others. Each burns for exactly one hour, functioning as a clock by marking the times of day in a variety of scents.

Your obsidian garden Inspired by Eliassons hikes through volcanic obsidian fields in the Icelandic highlands, the artwork in this pavilion features black, shiny obsidian that stands out in stark contrast to the sandy ground, appearing to have erupted from beneath the desert.

The living lighthouse, 2023 a new installation comprising broad bands of colorful light that crawl across the walls of this circular room, wrapping visitors in a vibrant, ever-changing light installation.
The Research map, 2019- a sprawling pin wall that charts the research and ideas that have inspired Eliasson and his studio in recent years. The map can be seen as a space of micro-storytelling, where seemingly unrelated contents vibrate next to each other and create new meaning.

Photography series depicting the natural landscapes of Iceland including The glacier melt series, 1999/2019, 2019, The inner cave series, 1998, and The horizon series, 2002 selected by the artist with the landscape of Qatar in mind.

The presentation of The curious desert follows Qatar Museums October 2022 unveiling of Eliassons outdoor installation commissioned for the desert near the Ain Mohammed heritage site in Northern Qatar. The artwork, Shadows traveling on the sea of the day (2022), continues the Icelandic-Danish artists longstanding exploration of the interplay between human perception and the natural world.

A two-part film created by Tigerlily Production for Studio Olafur Eliasson and Qatar Museums captures the development of Eliassons installation Shadows traveling on the sea of the day and his exhibition The curious desert.

The film created for Shadows traveling on the sea of the day will be on view at the Mohammed Jassim Al Khulaifi Library of The National Museum of Qatar, together with a special reading room dedicated to Eliasson, that collects a broad selection of catalogues covering the artists production, starting from the his first solo exhibition in the nineties running up to the present.

The screening of the premier of the film about The curious desert will be announced during the course of the exhibition.
A discussion session was held at the National Museum of Qatar, to acquaint the public with Eliasson’s exhibition.

The discussion session was moderated by HE Chairperson of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani and HE Minister of Environment and Climate Change Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al-Thani, together with Artist Olafur Eliasson, in addition to representatives from the Doha Film Institute, Reach Out to Asia, Qatar Leadership Center, and CEO of Al Hosh Gallery Ghanem Jassim al Ghanem.

الدوحة: افتتحت سعادة الشيخة المياسة بنت حمد آل ثاني رئيس مجلس أمناء متاحف قطر، الجزء الخاص من معرض /الصحراء تعانق الخيال/، الذي صممه الفنان الآيسلندي -الدنماركي، أولافور إلياسون خارج منطقة الذخيرة.

وصمم إلياسون هذا المعرض، خصيصًا لموقع صحراوي خارج منطقة الذخيرة ولصالات العرض داخل متحف قطر الوطني في الدوحة، ويستمر إلى الخامس عشر من أغسطس المقبل.

ويتضمن المعرض سلسلة من الأعمال الفنية التي يقدمها الفنان خصيصا لتلك المواقع الجديدة، وذلك استكمالا لرحلة استكشاف اهتمامات الفنان بالأضواء والألوان والدراسات الهندسية والوعي بالبيئة والعلاقات بين الكائنات الأخرى. ويأتي هذا المعرض في إطار مبادرة /قطر تبدع/، وهي حركة ثقافية وطنية على مدار العام ترعى وتروج وتحتفي بتنوع الأنشطة الثقافية في قطر.

وقالت سعادة الشيخة المياسة بنت حمد آل ثاني رئيس مجلس أمناء متاحف قطر في تصريح لها بالمناسبة، إن معرض /الصحراء تعانق الخيال/ يصور مدى تأثير الفن وقدرته على حل المشاكل، ويشمل ذلك أعمال الفنان الجديدة المنصوبة في الصحراء القطرية التي تفتح بابا للحوار حول البيئة، أحد أشد المواضيع أهمية في عصرنا الحالي، في سياق مشاهد بلدنا الطبيعية.

وأوضحت أن هذا المعرض ينفرد بأسلوب عرض أعماله الفنية، التي تتواجد داخل متحف قطر الوطني وخارجه في الوقت ذاته، ويقدم برهانا على أن الفن غير منحصر في صالات العرض، وإنما متواجد حولنا في كل مكان يلهمنا ويثقفنا.

من جهته، قال الفنان أولافور إلياسون:” إنها فرصة رائعة أن أقدم أعمالا فنية للسبخة الواقعة بالقرب من غابة القرم في منطقة الذخيرة.. الشمس، والرياح، ومياه البحيرة المالحة – جميعها عناصر ساهمت في إنتاج الأعمال الفنية التي سيشاهدها الزوار هنا”، معربا عن أمله في أن تدفع الأعمال الفنية الزوار لاستشعار المحيط الطبيعي والعلاقة التعاضدية بين الإنسان والطبيعة في إنتاج الأعمال الفنية، منوها في الوقت نفسه بأن الجزء الآخر من معرضه في متحف قطر الوطني، يتمثل في الأفكار والممارسات المتجسدة منذ أكثر من 25 عاما من مسيرته المهنية كفنان، حيث يثري الموقعان الطبيعيان الثقافيان بعضهما البعض، ويشكلان معا /الصحراء تعانق الخيال/.

وأثناء جولة للإعلاميين في المعرض، أوضحت السيدة بثينة بلتاجي رئيس قسم المعارض والمقتنيات التراثية بمتحف قطر الوطني، أن العمل الفني الصحراوي المكون من اثني عشر جناحا مؤقتا، ويقع على بعد 64 كيلومترا شمال شرق الدوحة بالقرب من محمية الذخيرة، داخل سبخة، يتألف من أعمال فنية مختلفة في شكل تجارب تستغل العناصر الطبيعية للمنطقة كأشعة الشمس والرياح والمياه.

وتستكشف الأجنحة الثلاثة الأولى في المنطقة الخارجية الظواهر البصرية، مستفيدة من قوس قزح والظلال والمرايا لخلق تأثيرات ساحرة، بينما تستكشف الأجنحة من الجناح الخامس إلى السابع عناصر السبخة لإنتاج أعمال فنية تعرض لاحقا في متحف قطر الوطني.

أما الأجنحة الثلاثة الأخيرة فتضع هذه البيئة في تناغم مع الأعمال الأخرى، باستخدام مواد مثل الطين الجليدي من أيسلندا.

ومن بين المشاريع التي تحتضنها الأجنحة الصحراوية الاثنا عشر: قوس قزح، ويتألف من 11 موشورا ضوئيا مرتبا على طول الجزء العلوي من كرة عاكسة وفقا لمسار الشمس في منطقة الذخيرة، وتنحني هذه المواشير وتكسر ضوء النهار، وفي أوقات مختلفة من العام تشكل قوس قزح في دائرة مكتملة. ومرصد رسومات ملح البحر – لوحتان دائريتان على قماش – واحدة بيضاء والأخرى سوداء – تدوران ببطء بواسطة المحركات، حيث تتقطر المياه، ممزوجة بأصباغ سوداء وبيضاء على التوالي على الأسطح الدوارة. تتسبب الرياح في تحرك أداة الرسم على سطح الصفحة المقلوبة، تاركة علامات متموجة على السطح. ثم تعرض الرسوم، وهي صور لأحوال الطقس في الموقع، بشكل دوري في متحف قطر الوطني. ثم مبخرة شمسية، كرة زجاجية واحدة تشعل مجموعة مختارة من العطور التي تعرف بها دولة قطر ودول المنطقة – العود والمسك والعنبر وغيرها – كل منها يحترق لمدة ساعة واحدة بالضبط، بفعل أشعة الشمس، وتعمل المبخرة كساعة تشير إلى أوقات اليوم بروائح متنوعة.

كما تتكون المشاريع التي تحتضنها الأجنحة الصحراوية الإثنا عشر أيضا، حديقة حجر السبج، حيث يبرُز حجر السبج الأسود اللامع في هذا الجناح والمستوحى من نزهات إلياسون عبر الحقول البركانية في مرتفعات أيسلندا في تباين واضح مع الأرض الرملية، يظهر وكأنه ينبثق من تحت رمال الصحراء. وعمل إلياسون ومتاحف قطر مع خبير بيئي لإجراء مسح شامل للموقع بالقرب من الذخيرة من أجل ضمان حماية النباتات المحلية والكائنات التي تعيش في المنطقة مثل الثعلب الأحمر العربي.

وتدعو مجموعة الأعمال الفنية الموسعة داخل متحف قطر الوطني، والتي تعود لفترات مختلفة من مسيرة الفنان المهنية، الزوار لإيجاد رابط يربطهم بالأعمال الضوئية المديدة، والدراسات الهندسية المعقدة، وسلسلة الصور من أيسلندا، والألوان المائية، والأجهزة البصرية، والخريطة البحثية الكبيرة.

وتشمل الأعمال المعروضة في متحف قطر الوطني: المنارة الحية، 2023 يتألف من نطاقات عريضة من الضوء الملون تمتد عبر جدران غرفة دائرية، وتضع الزوار في تركيبات ضوئية نابضة بالحياة ومتغيرة باستمرار.. خارطة البحث، 2019، جدار مرن وكبير يرسم الأبحاث والأفكار التي ألهمت إلياسون والأستوديو الخاص به في السنوات الأخيرة. إذ يمكن النظر إلى الخريطة على أنها مساحة صغيرة لسرد القصص، حيث يتناغم فيها محتوى يبدو غير مترابط بجانب بعضها البعض ليخلق معاني جديدة.. سلسلة التصوير الفوتوغرافي التي تصور المناظر الطبيعية لأيسلندا – من ضمنها سلسلة ذوبان الأنهار الجليدية، من عام 1999 إلى 2019، سلسلة الكهف الداخلي، 1998، وسلسلة الأفق، 2022 – اختارها الفنان مع أخذ المناظر الطبيعية في قطر بعين الاعتبار.. الأعمال الفنية التي تم إنشاؤها بواسطة آلات الرسم والطلاء المثبتة في الخارج بالقرب من غابة القرم بالذخيرة.

ويأتي معرض /الصحراء تعانق الخيال/، عقب كشف متاحف قطر في أكتوبر 2022 عن عمل إلياسون في ساحة خارجية، تم تكليفه به ليُنصب في الصحراء بالقرب من موقع عين محمد التراثي في شمال قطر.

ويواصل العمل الفني /سفر الظلال في بحر النهار/ (2022) مسيرة استكشاف الفنان الأيسلندي- الدنماركي الطويلة في التفاعل بين الإدراك البشري والطبيعة.

كما يوثق فيلم من جزأين أنتجته شركة /تايغرليلي برودكشن/ لاستوديو أولافور إلياسون ومتاحف قطر، تطور عمل الفنان الموسوم بـ/سفر الظلال في بحر النهار/ ومعرضه /الصحراء تعانق الخيال/.

ويعرض فيلم /سفر الظلال في بحر النهار/ بمكتبة محمد جاسم الخليفي في متحف قطر الوطني، إلى جانب قاعة قراءة خاصة مكرسة لإلياسون، والتي تضم مجموعة واسعة من الكتالوجات التي تتضمن أعمال الفنان، بدءا من معرضه الفردي الأول في التسعينيات وحتى الآن. بينما سيتم الإعلان عن العرض الأول للفيلم المتعلق بمعرض /الصحراء تعانق الخيال/ خلال فترة المعرض.

ولتعريف الجمهور بأحدث معرض لإلياسون، نُظمت جلستان نقاشيتان في متحف قطر الوطني، الأولى حول المعرض وأدارها كل من سعادة الشيخة المياسة بنت حمد آل ثاني رئيس مجلس أمناء متاحف قطر، وسعادة الشيخ الدكتور فالح بن ناصر بن أحمد بن علي آل ثاني وزير البيئة والتغير المناخي، والفنان إلياسون وممثلين من مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام، و/أيادي الخير نحو آسيا/، ومركز قطر للقيادات، والسيد غانم الغانم، الرئيس التنفيذي لجاليري الحوش.

وتناولت الجلسة النقاشية متعددة التخصصات، السبل التي يسعى الفن والثقافة من خلالها إلى إحداث تغيير إيجابي في مواجهة أزمة المناخ الطارئة.

أما الجلسة النقاشية الثانية فكانت بعنوان /الفن والبيئة: وعي وعمل/، وأدارها الفنان إلياسون والسيد محمد عمر البدر من إدارة التغير المناخي بوزارة البيئة والتغير المناخي. والدكتور أسبا تشاتزيفثيميو، خبير بيئي ومستشار بيئي في متحف قطر الوطني؛ والسيدة ريم السهلاوي، المديرة المشاركة لحركة الشباب العربي للمناخ؛ ونيما غيتيري، كاتبة وفنانة ومنظرة شعبية من الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية / كينيا، وتمحورت الجلسة حول علاقتنا مع البيئات الطبيعية في سياق حالة الطوارئ المناخية، وتناولت الطرق المعقدة التي يمكننا من خلالها الاستماع والاستجابة لاحتياجات الكثيرين – البشر والكائنات الأخرى والطبيعة على حد سواء.
