HBKU Showcases Innovative Approach to Self-Assembled Molecular 3D Printing

Doha: A research team at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) has successfully demonstrated the world’s first Self-Assembled Molecular 3D printing approach.

This pioneering approach seamlessly integrates the concept of molecular self-assembly (the spontaneous organization of organic molecules) with additive manufacturing technology to produce a new class of hybrid metal/organic materials with unique properties. This achievement paves the way for the development of new devices and systems with advanced and augmented functions, such as a new generation of electronics, sensors, and solar cells.

Being at the forefront of this field of research, HBKU aims at furthering the development of this technology for the international marketplace. Recently, HBKU entered into a research collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to jointly develop a full-scale system that utilizes this Self-Assembled Molecular 3D printing approach in real-world applications.

Commenting on this achievement, Senior Planning and Research Director, Office of HBKUs Vice President for Research (OVPR) Dr. Rachid Zaffou said: “Molecular Self-Assembly in 3D printing is a novel and disruptive approach that could define new frontiers. We are excited to collaborate with MIT to accelerate the development of this technology and collaborate toward building a full-scale system that can be used for practical applications.” This research, led by Dr. Hicham Hamoudi, Founder of the Disruptive Technology research program at HBKU, was borne out of HBKUs Thematic Research Grant Program, which is organized by OVPR. The innovative 3D printing method successfully passed its proof-of-concept stage, securing various patents in the process. It has also been recognized by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) as the first in the world demonstration of Self-Assembly molecular 3D printing.

الدوحة: نجح فريق بحثي في معهد قطر لبحوث البيئة والطاقة بجامعة حمد بن خليفة، في عرض أول نهج لطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد تعتمد على التجميع الذاتي الجزيئي في العالم.

ويدمج هذا الأسلوب المبتكر، بسلاسة، بين مفهوم التجميع الذاتي الجزيئي (التنظيم التلقائي للجزيئات العضوية) مع تكنولوجيا التصنيع المضافة، لإنتاج نوع جديد من المواد المعدنية العضوية أو الهجينة ذات الخصائص الفريدة، حيث يمهد هذا الإنجاز الطريق لتطوير أجهزة وأنظمة جديدة ذات وظائف متقدمة ومعززة، مثل إطلاق جيل جديد من الإلكترونيات وأجهزة الاستشعار والخلايا الشمسية.

وتسعى جامعة حمد بن خليفة لتعزيز وتطوير هذه التكنولوجيا لنشرها في الأسواق العالمية، من خلال انضمامها في تعاون بحثي مع معهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا لتطوير نظام شامل، يستخدم أسلوب الطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد التي تعتمد على التجميع الذاتي الجزيئي في مجالات مختلفة على مستوى العالم.

وتعليقا على هذا الإنجاز، قال الدكتور رشيد زافو مدير أول التخطيط والبحوث بمكتب نائب رئيس جامعة حمد بن خليفة للأبحاث، إن التجميع الذاتي الجزيئي في الطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد، يعد أسلوبا جديدا وفريدا يمكن أن يدشن لمرحلة جديدة في هذا المجال، معربا عن سعادته بالشراكة مع معهد ماساتشوستس للتكنولوجيا لتسريع تطوير هذه التكنولوجيا، والتعاون من أجل بناء نظام واسع النطاق يمكن استخدامه في الحياة العملية.

يأتي هذا العمل البحثي الذي قاده الدكتور هشام حمودي مؤسس برنامج بحوث التكنولوجيا الإحلالية بجامعة حمد بن خليفة، في إطار برنامج المنح البحثية المتخصصة، الذي يشرف عليه مكتب نائب رئيس الجامعة للبحوث، حيث اجتاز هذا النهج البحثي المبتكر للطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد، بنجاح، مرحلة إثبات المفهوم، مما أدى إلى ضمان الحصول على براءات اختراع مختلفة في هذا المجال، كما اعترفت به هيئة البحوث الأسترالية (CSIRO) بصفتها الأولى عالميا في تطوير تقنية التجميع الذاتي الجزيئي للطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد.
