Infantino: “Every World Cup Should Have a Maradona Day”

Doha: President of the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) Gianni Infantino, proposed dedicating a day in the upcoming versions of the World Cup to celebrate the achievements of Argentine soccer legend Diego Armando Maradona.

Infantino said at an event held on the sidelines of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 to mark the second anniversary of Maradona’s death “The mercurial figure should be remembered at each subsequent tournament for his significant impact on football”.

“Diego is immortal, he is with us,” Infantino said. “We not only need to pay tribute but to celebrate also Diego. I would like that from now on, at every World Cup we would take one day to celebrate Diego Armando Maradona, because he made so many people fall in love with our sport, football.

“Diego came back to be with us at the World Cup in Russia, and personally I had the chance to speak to him many times and start a friendship, and it was then when I realized his depth”.

Infantino pointed out that Maradona was distinguished by sincerity and a unique charismatic personality, he Sometimes said things that were very simple, but had a very big impact.

Diego was a great leader in Argentina, South America and in all the world. We need to keep celebrating him. I feel great emotion, we would have liked him to be here at this World Cup, but he is in all our hearts.” said Infantino.

الدوحة: اقترح جياني إنفانتينو رئيس الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم /فيفا/ تخصيص يوم في النسخ المقبلة لكأس العالم للاحتفال بإنجازات أسطورة كرة القدم الأرجنتيني دييجو أرماندو مارادونا.

وقال إنفانتينو في فعالية أقيمت على هامش بطولة كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022 بمناسبة الذكرى الثانية لوفاة مارادونا “ينبغي تذكر دييجو مارادونا في كل بطولة مقبلة لتأثيره الملحوظ على كرة القدم”.

وأضاف: “دييجو لا يموت فهو حاضر معنا، لا يجب فقط أن نقوم بإحياء ذكراه بل الاحتفال به، من الآن فصاعداً علينا أن نخصّص يوماً في كل نسخة من نسخ كأس العالم للاحتفال بدييجو أرماندو مارادونا، لأن ما فعله هذا الرجل لجعل الناس يعشقون كرة القدم، رياضتنا، لم يفعله سوى القلة القليلة أو ربما لا أحد”.

واسترجع جياني إنفانتينو ذكريات “كيف أنه جعل دييجو مارادونا أكثر قرباً من /فيفا/”، وقال في هذا الإطار: ” كان معنا في كأس العالم في روسيا 2018، وكان لي شرف الحديث معه شخصياً والالتقاء به في بعض المرات وإقامة علاقة صداقة معه”.

وأشار إنفانتينو إلى أن مارادونا كان يتميز بالإخلاص وشخصية كاريزمية فريدة، وقال: “كان يقول أموراً في بعض الأحيان تكون بسيطة للغاية إلا أن تأثيرها كبير جداً”.

ووصف رئيس الـ/فيفا/ مارادونا بأنه أيضاً “قائد عظيم في الأرجنتين وأمريكا الجنوبية”، وقال: “كنا نأمل لو كان دييجو معنا هنا جميعاً في هذه النسخة، إلا أنه في قلوبنا، وأود مرة أخرى أن أهنئ جميع الأبطال الحاضرين هنا من أجل تقاسم هذه اللحظة الجيّاشة، عاش دييجو”.
