Doha: Qatar National Library (QNL) is a beacon of creativity, culture and research that carries a cultural and intellectual message, rather than being just a bookstore though it has more than one million books in its collections, along with more than 500,000 e-books, periodicals and newspapers, and special collections, in addition to full-text online resources.

The QNL project was announced on Nov. 19, 2012 by HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, to act as a steward of Qatars national heritage by collecting, preserving and making available the countrys recorded history.

Qatar National Library has been serving as a research library since it was inaugurated by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on April 16, 2018. The Library fosters and promotes greater global insight into the history and culture of the Gulf region.

As a public library, QNL provides equal access for all of Qatar’s residents to an environment that supports creativity, independent decision-making, and cultural development. Through all its functions, the Library provides leadership to the countrys library and cultural heritage sector.

Qatar National Library will serve as an important reference for visitors and fans of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 to obtain all the information related to cultural heritage both in Qatar and in the Arab region and the Middle East.

The building of the Library was designed by World-renowned architect Rem Koolhaas to be accessible environment for all users, including persons with special needs. The Library features innovative technologies that are seamlessly integrated throughout the building, such as automated self-checkout and return stations, and a wide range of computer systems, tablets, interactive screens and audiovisual equipment throughout the building.

Books at Qatar National Library are distributed in three main areas covering all subjects of literature, humanities, social and natural sciences, including more than 150,000 books and magazines in the Children and Young Adults Library. The Library also provides more than 200 electronic sources in various disciplines.

The National Library supports Qatar’s transformation journey from relying on natural resources to diversifying the sources of the economy and maintaining its sustainability, by providing students, researchers and all people residing in Qatar alike with the knowledge resources needed to promote lifelong learning opportunities, empower individuals and the society, and contribute to a better future for all.

The library pays special attention to children and young adults, offering them a huge range of books, references and electronic resources, in addition to organizing many events that address their minds, develop their passion for reading and learning, fuel their curiosity, and arouse their interest in science and technology and its tools.

The heart of Qatar National Library, the Heritage Library is a unique contribution to Qatars cultural landscape. Its growing collection includes rare and valuable archival documents related to the Arabic and Islamic history in general, and the history of the State of Qatar in particular. The library has more than 50,000 historic and heritage materials, more than 1400 historic maps and dozens of atlases, historical photographs, instruments and tools related to travel, and others.

Qatar National Library offers many historical and heritage manuscripts and books in Qatar Digital Library, where nearly 13 million materials have been digitized, containing the largest digital archive specialized in the history of the Middle East globally, including documents, photographs, and a unique collection of the most important reports, manuscripts, maps, historical photographs and audio recordings related to the Gulf region, the Arabian Peninsula and neighboring regions.

The Digital Library also houses thousands of historical photographs from the beginning of the photographic era until now, including unique maps and photographs taken by members of scientific and archaeological expeditions, portraits of the characters, other images reflecting the first attempts to press photographs, and unique documentary photographs covering important historical events in the region, such as the First and Second World Wars, colonial rule, and the development of infrastructure in the region, in addition to examples of amateur photos that offer a unique perspective on everyday life in the Middle East.

Over two million visitors benefited from Qatar Digital Library this year, as it offers free access for all users around the world to the digitized materials from the Library’s heritage holdings as well as some of the collections from the Library’s partners; demonstrating the global impact of Qatar National Library as a leader in the dissemination of knowledge, the preservation of heritage and the provision of free access to information for all locally and regionally.

Qatar National Library has succeeded in preserving the cultural heritage in the Arab region and the Middle East since it was selected in 2015 by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), to be the IFLA Regional Center for Preservation and Conservation (PAC) in the Arab world and the Middle East, before its official opening in March 2018.

As a result of the Library’s efforts in preserving heritage, the agreement with IFLA to host the regional center was renewed for another three years, extending the Library’s role in preserving the heritage of Qatar and the region for six years.

The Library has maintained its leading role in preserving the heritage through a group of equipped with world-class technology dedicated to handle all kinds of conservation and preservation activities. The Library also provides the “Seek Advice from a QNL Conservator ” service to help families seeking to preserve their heritage materials such as old books and documents.

Since 2015, Qatar National Library has carried out a leading role in coordinating the conservation and conservation efforts and initiatives among the Arab countries in the MENA region by capacity-building and technical support through training courses it provides frequently at its headquarters to learn about the most important new technologies in conservation and preservation. QNL also provides grants to many libraries and organize training causes in various countries.

QNL collaborated with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO to implement a joint project to supporting documentary heritage libraries in the Arab region. Under the agreement, QNL provided support to public and private libraries in Yemen, Algeria and various Arab countries.

QNL also launched an important project to monitor heritage exposed to danger or natural disasters in the region, in fulfillment of its role in monitoring disasters and threats to the documentary heritage in the region through cooperation with institutions and concerned authorities to take the necessary and rapid measures and provide support.

Qatar National Library has been keen on strengthening its international partnerships by concluding many agreements with libraries and national archival institutions, in order to serve knowledge and make available its cultural and heritage content to citizens of Qatar and the Gulf, and to provide access to digital resources in the fields of history, heritage and culture in Arabic and English for researchers, scientists, scholars and other interested people from all over the world.

Among the most important prominent partnerships was the cooperation with The British Library to digitize its collections of documents and images related to the history of Qatar and the Gulf. The launch of Qatar Digital Library is one of the most prominent fruits of this partnership.

QNL also signed memorandums of understanding with a number of libraries in Arab, Islamic and Central Asian countries, as well as the National Library of the Netherlands, the Nationaal Archief in the Netherlands, the National Library of France, and New York University. The agreements aimed at promoting digitization of documents and manuscripts about Qatar, the region and the Arab and Islamic world, and the exchange of sources of knowledge.

Qatar National Library seeks to be one of the world’s centers of excellence in the fields of learning, research and culture, to preserve the heritage of the region, unleash imagination and encourage exploration.

The Library will open from 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM only on World Cup matchdays (22, 24, 26, 28 and 30 November and 6 December) at Education City Stadium, and cars will not be allowed in or out of Education City from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Visitors of the Library on those days have to use the Metro’s Green Line, or have someone to drop them off in front of the station. The Library will be closed on Friday 2 and 9 December.

الدوحة: ليست مكتبة قطر الوطنية مجرد مستودع لأكثر من مليون كتاب مطبوع وأكثر من 500 ألف مادة إلكترونية متنوعة بين الكتب والدوريات والصحف وغيرها، بل تحمل رسالة ثقافية وفكرية وبحثية جعلت منها منارة للإبداع على المستوى الإنساني والوطني.

وتضطلع مكتبة قطر الوطنية، منذ أن أعلنت صاحبة السمو الشيخة موزا بنت ناصر رئيس مجلس إدارة مؤسسة قطر، عن هذا المشروع في 19 نوفمبر 2012، بمسؤولية الحفاظ على التراث الوطني لدولة قطر من خلال جمع التراث والتاريخ المكتوب الخاص بها والمحافظة عليه وإتاحته للجميع.

كما تقوم المكتبة بوظيفتها كمكتبة بحثية منذ أن افتتحها حضرة صاحب السمو الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني، أمير البلاد المفدى، في 16 أبريل 2018، وتعمل على نشر وتعزيز رؤية عالمية أعمق لتاريخ وثقافة منطقة الخليج.

وانطلاقًا من وظيفتها، تتيح المكتبة لجميع المواطنين والمقيمين في دولة قطر فرصًا متكافئة للاستفادة من مرافقها وتجهيزاتها وخدماتها التي تدعم الإبداع والاستقلال في اتخاذ القرار لدى روادها وتنمية معارفهم الثقافية، ولذلك فإن المكتبة تلعب دورًا رياديًا في قطاع المكتبات والتراث الثقافي في قطر.

وستكون مكتبة قطر الوطنية بمثابة مرجع مهم لزوار وجماهير كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022، للحصول على جميع المعلومات التي تخص التراث الثقافي سواء لدولة قطر أو المنطقة العربية ومنطقة الشرق الأوسط.

وتحقيقًا وانسجامًا مع أهداف المكتبة تم تجهيز المبنى لها، الذي صمّمه المهندس المعماري الهولندي الشهير رِم كولهاس، ليكون مناسبًا لجميع الزوار بمن فيهم ذوو الاحتياجات الخاصة، كما أنه مزود بتقنيات عالية مثل نظام فرز الكتب الآلي، وشاشات الوسائط التفاعلية، ومحطات الاستعارة والإعادة التلقائية التي تمكن أعضاء المكتبة من استعارة الكتب وإرجاعها بسهولة ويسر.

وتتوزع الكتب في مكتبة قطر الوطنية على ثلاث مناطق رئيسية في جميع الموضوعات، من الآداب والعلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية والعلوم الطبيعية، منها أكثر من 150 ألف كتاب ومجلة في مكتبة الأطفال واليافعين، كما توفر المكتبة أكثر من 200 مصدر إلكتروني يمثل كل منها نافذة على أحدث ما وصلت إليه المعرفة الإنسانية من كتب ومجلات ودوريات أجنبية في مختلف التخصصات.

وتدعم المكتبة مسيرة دولة قطر في الانتقال من الاعتماد على الموارد الطبيعية إلى تنويع مصادر الاقتصاد والحفاظ على استدامته، وذلك من خلال إتاحة المصادر المعرفية اللازمة للطلبة والباحثين وكل من يعيش على أرض دولة قطر لتعزيز فرص التعلم مدى الحياة، وتمكين الأفراد والمجتمع، والمساهمة في توفير مستقبل أفضل للجميع.

وقد أولت المكتبة عناية فائقة للأطفال واليافعين وخصصت لهم مئات الآلاف من الكتب والمراجع، وعشرات المصادر الإلكترونية، كما تنظم لهم العديد من الفعاليات التي تخاطب عقولهم وتنمي شغفهم بالقراءة والتعلم وتذكي جذوة الفضول لديهم، وتثير اهتمامهم بالعلوم والتكنولوجيا وأدواتها.

وتمثل المكتبة التراثية، التي تقع في منتصف المبنى، قلب مكتبة قطر، بتصميم معماري متميز، يجعلها تشبه المواقع الأثرية، وتضم مخطوطات نادرة مرتبطة بتاريخ الحضارة العربية والإسلامية عامة وتاريخ دولة قطر خاصة، حيث تحتوي على أكثر من 50 ألف مادة تاريخية وتراثية، منها أكثر من 4 آلاف مخطوط وأكثر من 1400 خريطة تاريخية وعشرات الأطالس والأدوات الفلكية والآلات الملاحية والصور التاريخية، وغيرها من المقتنيات التراثية.

وتفاعلًا مع تكنولوجيا العصر، أتاحت مكتبة قطر الوطنية الكثير من المخطوطات والكتب التاريخية والتراثية في مكتبة قطر الرقمية، حيث تمت رقمنة ما يقرب من 13 مليون مادة، لتحتوي بذلك على أكبر أرشيف رقمي متخصص في تاريخ الشرق الأوسط على مستوى العالم للوثائق والصور الفوتوغرافية، ويضم مجموعة فريدة من أهم التقارير والمراسلات والمخطوطات والخرائط والصور التاريخية والتسجيلات الصوتية المتعلقة بمنطقة الخليج وشبه الجزيرة العربية والمناطق المجاورة.

كما تضم المكتبة الرقمية آلاف الصور الفوتوغرافية التاريخية منذ بدء عصر التصوير الفوتوغرافي وحتى الآن، منها خرائط وصور فريدة التقطها أعضاء البعثات العلمية والأثرية، وصور بورتريه للشخصيات، وصور أخرى تعكس المحاولات الأولى لصحافة الصور الفوتوغرافية، وصور وثائقية فريدة تغطي أحداثًا تاريخية مهمة شهدتها المنطقة (مثل الحربين العالميتين الأولى والثانية والحكم الاستعماري وتطور البنية التحتية في المنطقة)، وأمثلة لصور الهواة التي تقدم منظورًا فريدًا عن الحياة اليومية في منطقة الشرق الأوسط.

وقد تجاوز عدد المستفيدين من الأرشيف الرقمي للمكتبة هذا العام حاجز المليونين، من زائري مكتبة قطر الرقمية، حيث تتيح المكتبة الرقمية لجميع المستخدمين في أنحاء العالم الاطلاع المجاني على المواد المرقمنة من مقتنيات المكتبة التراثية، بالإضافة إلى بعض المختارات من مجموعات الشركاء، ما يؤكد التأثير العالمي لمكتبة قطر الوطنية التي تبوأت منذ اللحظة الأولى الصدارة في قطاع المكتبات محليًا وإقليميًا في نشر المعرفة والحفاظ على التراث وإتاحة وصول المعلومات للجميع.

وقد نجحت المكتبة في الحفاظ على التراث الثقافي في المنطقة العربية ومنطقة الشرق الأوسط وذلك منذ اختيارها عام 2015 من قبل الاتحاد الدولي لجمعيات ومؤسسات المكتبات (الإفلا)، لتكون المركز الإقليمي لصون المواد التراثية في العالم العربي والشرق الأوسط والمحافظة عليها، وذلك قبل افتتاحها رسميًا في مارس عام 2018.

ونتيجة لجهودها في حفظ هذا التراث جاء تجديد الاتفاق بين “الإفلا” ومكتبة قطر الوطنية هذا العام، لفترة جديدة مدتها ثلاث سنوات تعزيزًا لجهودها على مدى ست سنوات في المحافظة على التراث العربي وتراث المنطقة.

واستطاعت المكتبة أن تؤدي دورها في الحفاظ على التراث سواء تراث المكتبة أو المكتبات العربية أو الإقليمية، عبر مجموعة من المختبرات التي تعمل على تحقيق هذه المهام، فهناك مختبر للصيانة والحفظ ومختبر علمي، بالإضافة إلى مختبرين آخرين تستخدم فيهما تقنية حديثة جدًا لإزالة الحموضة من الأوراق والمقتنيات بكميات كبيرة، حيث تعتبر الحموضة من أهم المشاكل التي تؤثر على الحفظ للمقتنيات التراثية، وتعمل هذه المختبرات على صيانة مقتنيات المكتبة الوطنية، كما تقدم عبر موقعها الإلكتروني خدمة باسم “اسأل أخصائي الصيانة” يتم فيها الإجابة بشكل فني عن المشكلات التي يتعرض لها التراث الخاص بالعائلات والمخطوطات والوثائق القديمة، وتقديم المعلومات الفنية التي يمكن من خلالها الحفاظ على التراث.

وتقوم المكتبة بدور ريادي في تنسيق جهود ومبادرات الحفظ والصيانة بين الدول العربية في الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا، حيث جاء اختيار المكتبة لهذا الدور بعد منافسة مع عدد من المؤسسات في مختلف الدول وذلك منذ 2015، ثم تم التجديد في 2018، وليتجدد الاتفاق مرة أخرى هذا العام حتى عام 2024، وذلك بناء على المشاريع التي قدمتها مكتبة قطر.

وتقوم المكتبة بدورها في تحقيق هذا الأمر عبر بناء القدرات والدعم الفني من خلال الدورات التدريبية التي تقدمها بشكل دائم بمقرها للتعرف على أهم التقنيات الجديدة في الصيانة والحفظ، إلى جانب تقديم منح للعديد من المكتبات، فضلًا عن الانتقال بالدورات إلى مختلف البلاد، حيث قامت المكتبة بالتعاون مع منظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والعلم والثقافة “اليونسكو” بحصر معظم المكتبات التي لديها تراث وثائقي، سواء كانت مكتبات عامة أو حكومية أو قطاعًا خاصًا، فقدمت المكتبة دعمها لمكتبات عامة وخاصة في اليمن والجزائر ومختلف الدول العربية.

ولعل من أهم مشاريع المكتبة في الحفاظ على التراث العربي وفي المنطقة مبادرة “حماية” التي تعزز دور المكتبة في نشر الوعي في قطر والمنطقة بأهمية مكافحة الاتجار غير المشروع بالممتلكات التراثية، لا سيما التراث الوثائقي والمخطوطات.

وكذلك مشروع “المرصد” الذي يترقب التراث المعرض لأي خطر أو كوارث طبيعية بالمنطقة، لتقوم المكتبة الوطنية بمسؤوليتها في رصد الكوارث والأخطار التي تهدد تراث المنطقة الوثائقي عبر التعاون مع المؤسسات والجهات المعنية لاتخاذ الإجراءات الضرورية والسريعة وتقديم الدعم المتاح.

وقد حرصت المكتبة على تعزيز شراكاتها الدولية عبر إبرام العديد من الشراكات الدولية مع المكتبات والمؤسسات الأرشيفية الوطنية؛ لخدمة المعرفة وإتاحة المحتوى الثقافي والتراثي لديها لشعوبنا في قطر والخليج، ما يعزز قدرة الباحثين والعلماء والدارسين وسائر المهتمين من جميع أنحاء العالم على الوصول للمصادر الرقمية حول التاريخ والتراث والثقافة في دولة قطر ومنطقة الخليج، كما أن وثائق المكتبة ليست مقصورة على اللغة العربية بل هناك وثائق بالإنجليزية، ومن أبرز هذه الشراكات كان التعاون مع المكتبة البريطانية في رقمنة محتوياتها من الوثائق والصور ذات الصلة الوثيقة بتاريخ قطر والخليج، وكان من أبرز ثمار هذه الشراكة إطلاق مكتبة قطر الرقمية.

كما تم توقيع مذكرات تفاهم مع عدد من المكتبات العربية والإسلامية وفي آسيا الوسطى، ومكتبة هولندا الوطنية، والأرشيف الهولندي الوطني، والمكتبة الفرنسية الوطنية، وجامعة نيويورك، كل هذا من أجل تعزيز رقمنة الوثائق والمخطوطات حول قطر والمنطقة والعالم العربي والإسلامي وتبادل مصادر المعرفة.

وفي النهاية يمكن القول، إن رؤية مكتبة قطر الوطنية تسعى إلى جعلها من المراكز المتميزة عالميًا في مجالات التعلم والبحوث والثقافة، وإلى أن تحافظ على تراث المنطقة وتطلق الخيال وتشجع الاستكشاف، كما تهدف رسالة المكتبة إلى الحفاظ على تراث الدولة والمنطقة.

جدير بالذكر أن مكتبة قطر ستفتح أبوابها للجمهور في أيام مباريات كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022 التي تقام على استاد المدينة التعليمية (22، و24، و26، و28، و30 نوفمبر و6 ديسمبر) من الساعة الثامنة صباحًا حتى الثانية ظهرًا فقط، ولن يُسمح للسيارات خلال تلك الأيام بالدخول أو الخروج من المدينة التعليمية من الساعة 11:00 صباحًا حتى الساعة 8:00 مساءً، وقد أوصت المكتبة الزائرين باستخدام المترو (الخط الأخضر) للوصول إلى محطة مكتبة قطر الوطنية، أو منطقة نزول الركاب بالمحطة، فيما ستكون المكتبة مغلقة يومي الجمعة 2 و9 ديسمبر.
