Qatar Welcomes Middle East’s First Pandas in Al Khor Ahead of World Cup

Doha: The Ministry of Municipality represented by the Public Park Department announced the arrival of two giant pandas “Soraya” and “Suhail” to Qatar as a gift from China to Qatar on Wednesday on the occasion of hosting the World Cup 2022, within the framework of strengthening the relationship between the two countries.

What distinguishes this event is that Qatar is considered the first country in the Middle East in which the giant pandas arrives. Qatar is the 20th country in the world that has the giant pandas. The giant pandas are going to be taken care of by an international team of doctors and specialists in Giant Panda Medicine.

In this connection, the Director of the Public Parks Department, Eng. Mohammed Ali Al Khori revealed the role of the Ministry of Municipality in building the park of the two giant pandas near Al Khor Park, Al Bayt Stadium and both municipalities of Al Khor and Al Thakhira in line with the highest international specifications and standards. It is 35 km away from Doha.

He mentioned that the total area of the park project reaches 120 thousand square meter. It includes a giant panda display and shelter, in addition to the green areas and service buildings. A medical facility is attached to the giant panda park to meet the needs of the animals at all times.

Mohammed Al Khori pointed out that the public will have the opportunity to visit the giant panda park at the time of the near launch of the World Cup 2022, after the period of health quarantine decided for the two pandas after arriving in Qatar.

He also pointed out that the panda park was designed in application of the idea from (home to home) since it is similar to the mountains inspired by the the configuration of the panda original homeland which is Minshan Mountains in the Chinese Province Sichuan, considering keeping a separate level for the pandas to preserve their special living nature. It was taken into consideration while designing the panda park that it should be convenient to the climatic conditions of the panda and to provide parks and fun areas for them, in addition to providing paths for the visitors to watch the panda. (2814) of Bamboo on which the pandas feed were cultivated in a part of the park. Trees from Chinese forests were brought and cultivated inside the shelter.

It is expected that the panda park will be one of the most important tourist and leisure destinations that will attract visitors from inside and outside Qatar.

On his part, the Acting Director of Building Projects Department in Ashghal Eng. Jarallah Mohammed Al Marri said that the works of the panda park were completed in coordination with the Ministry of Municipality. Ashghal achieved about 2 million work hours. About 75% of the used materials were local such as iron and steel, electrical and mechanical tools, glass and other materials.

He added that the park was designed in line with the highest standards of quality and safety in accordance with the standards of the Global System of Assessing Sustainability (GSAS), since the designing and operational considerations were applied to achieve an environmental quality of 3 stars of energy preserving and Keeping the environment (Ging Ging) Panda meaning in Chinese language Shining Crystal, is the male panda. It was born on Sep. 19, 2018, it given the Arabic name Suhail which means the star in the sky.

(Si Hi) Panda meaning in Chinese “four seas” is the female panda. It was born on July 26, 2019, its Arabic name is Soraya which means ( a group of shining stars ). These two names have great significance in the Qatari culture.

الدوحة: أعلنت وزارة البلدية، ممثلة بإدارة الحدائق العامة، يوم أمس، عن وصول زوج من حيوان الباندا العملاق “ثريا” و”سهيل” إلى دولة قطر، هديةً من قبل جمهورية الصين الشعبية الصديقة؛ بمناسبة استضافة بطولة كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022، وفي إطار تعزيز أواصر الصداقة بين البلدين.

وما يميز هذا الحدث أن قطر أول دولة في الشرق الأوسط يصلها الباندا العملاق من جمهورية الصين الشعبية، وتعتبر الدولة رقم 20 على مستوى العالم التي يتواجد فيها حيوان الباندا العملاق، وسيتم رعايته من قبل فريق عالمي من الأطباء والخبراء المختصين في طب الباندا العملاق.

وبهذه المناسبة، كشف المهندس محمد علي الخوري، مدير إدارة الحدائق العامة، عن دور وزارة البلدية في بناء حديقة بيت زوج الباندا وفق أعلى المواصفات والمعايير العالمية، والكائن بالقرب من منتزه الخور واستاد البيت، وكل من بلدية الخور والذخيرة، ويبعد حوالي 35 كيلو مترا عن مدينة الدوحة.

وذكر أن المساحة الإجمالية لمشروع الحديقة تبلغ 120 ألف متر مربع، حيث تشمل منطقة عرض وإيواء الباندا العملاق والمسطحات الخضراء والمباني الخدمية، كما تم توفير مرفق طبي ملحق ببيت الباندا؛ لتلبية احتياجات الحيوان في جميع الأوقات.

وأشار السيد محمد الخوري إلى أنه ستتم إتاحة الفرصة للجمهور لزيارة بيت الباندا العملاق، تزامنا مع اقتراب انطلاق بطولة كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022، وذلك بعد انتهاء فترة الحجر الصحي المقررة لزوج الباندا بعد وصوله إلى الدولة.

وأوضح أنه تم تصميم بيت الباندا تطبيقا لفكرة من (البيت إلى البيت) بحيث يحاكي شكل الجبال المستوحاة من تضاريس الأرض الأصلية للباندا، وهي جبال مينشان في مقاطعة سيتشوان الصينية، مع مراعاة الحفاظ على طبيعتها المعيشية الخاصة، كما روعي في تصميم بيت الباندا ملاءمته الظروف المناخية لحياة الباندا، وتوفير حدائق ومناطق مرحة له، وكذلك مسارات للزوار لمشاهدته، وقد تم زراعة جزء من الحديقة بعدد (2814) من نبات البامبو الذي يتغذى عليه الباندا، وتم جلب بعض الأشجار من غابات الصين وزراعتها في البيت من الداخل.

وتوقع المهندس الخوري أن يصبح بيت الباندا إحدى أبرز الوجهات السياحية والترفيهية بدولة قطر، والتي ستجذب إليها معظم الزائرين من الداخل والخارج.

من جهته، قال المهندس جارالله محمد المري، مدير إدارة مشروعات المباني بالإنابة في “أشغال”: إنه تم الانتهاء من أعمال بيت الباندا العملاق بالتنسيق مع وزارة البلدية، وحققت “أشغال” ما يقارب مليوني ساعة عمل، وقد تم الاعتماد على مواد محلية الصنع بنحو 75 بالمئة، مثل الحديد والصلب والأدوات الكهربائية والميكانيكية والزجاج وغيرها من المواد.

وأضاف أنه تم تصميم الحديقة طبقا لأعلى معايير الجودة والأمان، وبما يتوافق مع المعايير التابعة للمنظومة العالمية لتقييم الاستدامة (GSAS)، حيث تم الأخذ بالاعتبارات التصميمية والتشغيلية بما يلزم لتحقيق جودة بيئية بمعدل 3 نجوم من حيث توفير الطاقة والحفاظ على البيئة.

بدوره، عبر سعادة تشو جيان سفير جمهورية الصين الشعبية لدى دولة قطر عن سعادته بوصول الباندا الصيني العملاق إلى حديقته المكتملة والجميلة في الخور، مشيرا إلى أن الباندا العملاق هو الأول من نوعه في الشرق الأوسط، مما يعكس متانة العلاقات الصينية – القطرية وعمقها، ويكتب فصلا جديدا من الصداقة الصينية العربية.

وأعرب عن أمله أن يعزز وصول الباندا فكرة التعايش المتناغم بين الإنسان والطبيعة والحفاظ على التنوع البيولوجي العالمي، لافتا إلى أن التعاون بين البلدين في مجال حماية الحياة البرية يشجع الناس على المساهمة في حماية التنوع البيولوجي، وبناء مجتمع مستدام، كما يشجعهم على التعرف على حضارة الصين العريقة وصاحبة التاريخ الطويل والثقافة الرائعة، وذات التطور والتغير السريعين.

– الباندا (جينغ جينغ) ويعني باللغة الصينية “الكريستال اللامع”، وهو الباندا الذكر، وولد في 19 سبتمبر 2018، وقد حصل (جينغ جينغ) على الاسم العربي “سهيل” الذي يعني النجم في السماء.

– الباندا (سي هاي) وتعني باللغة الصينية “أربعة بحار”، وهي أنثى الباندا، وولدت في 26 يوليو 2019، واسمها العربي “الثريا”، وتعني “مجموعة ساطعة من النجوم”، وهذان الاسمان (سهيل وثريا) لهما معنى كبير في الثقافة القطرية.
