Qatar Increases Solar Power Plants Investments to QR 4 Billion to Diversify Production

Doha: The State of Qatar announced pumping QR 2.3 billion into solar power plants in Mesaieed and Ras Laffan industrial cities during this year, doubling the value of its total solar energy projects from QR1.7 billion to about QR 4 billion in a bid to boost its solar energy investments.

This reflects government policies and plans to diversify energy sources, by encouraging investment in renewable energy, given the climatic data and Qatar’s financial and technical potentials.

HE Minister of State for Energy Affairs Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi affirmed, in a statement, that the Mesaieed and Ras Laffan plants are a major step to enhance reliance on highly efficient renewable energy.

Founder and Chairman of the Friends of Environment Center (FEC) Dr. Saif Ali Al Hajari told Qatar News Agency (QNA) that Qatar’s decision to increase electricity production from solar energy came at the right time as the increasing demand for energy from various sources reached its peak.

The urgent need for energy made Qatar play regional and international roles to solve the issue of global demand, prompting the diversification of its sources and the increase of its production capacities from alternative energy through the establishment of an 800-MWp huge solar power plant in Al Kharsaah. The project will account for about 10 percent of the country’s production capacity, Dr. Al Hajari said.

The Al Kharsaah solar plant, inaugurated today, will cover nearly 10 percent of Qatar’s electricity needs, while the cost of the 10 km square plant, is about QR 1.7 billion.

The project comes as part of the country’s efforts to preserve energy and the environment, ensuring a balance between benefits of the current and future generations in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.

It also reflects Qatar’s policies to diversify energy production sources and increasingly rely on renewable energy as well as its commitments pertaining to FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The project was presented in a competitive manner to international companies to provide the best technology for generating electricity from solar energy. The cost of electricity from solar energy is competitive compared to that generated from fossil fuel.

Al Hajri stressed that Qatar is continuing to raise its capabilities of alternative energy by announcing two huge projects in this field in Mesaieed and Ras Laffan , adding that this trend copes with Qatar’s commitments seeking to bring carbon footprint to zero by 2050.

In this context, he stressed the need to take into account the challenges facing this industry in Qatar, especially amid the extremely high temperatures, levels of humidity and dust that affect the carbon emissions.

In Qatar, there is awareness of the need to shift to alternative energy in a number of projects, such as the Lusail and Msheireb projects, Dr. Al Hajri said, adding that Qatari nationals tend to establish individual solar energy plants in the agricultural, industrial and household sectors.

Expected to start production by the end of 2024, the two plants in Mesaieed and Ras Laffan will contribute to increasing the country’s renewable energy generation capacity to 1.67 GW by the end of 2024.

South Korea’s Samsung C&T Corporation will implement the project with a total investment of QR 2.3 billion (USD 600 million).

الدوحة: تتجه دولة قطر إلى تعزيز استثماراتها في مجال إنتاج الكهرباء من الطاقة الشمسية، مع مضاعفة قيمة إجمالي مشاريعها في هذا القطاع من 1.7 مليار ريال إلى نحو 4 مليارات ريال، وذلك بعد الإعلان عن ضخ استثمارات بقيمة 2.3 مليار ريال في محطتي /مسيعيد/ و/رأس لفان/ خلال العام الحالي.

ويعكس هذا التوجه السياسات والخطط الحكومية لتنويع مصادر الطاقة، من خلال التشجيع على الاستثمار في الطاقة المتجددة، بالنظر إلى المعطيات المناخية والإمكانات المادية والتقنية المتاحة في قطر.

وقد أكد سعادة المهندس سعد بن شريدة الكعبي وزير الدولة لشؤون الطاقة، في تصريح له، أن محطتي /مسيعيد/ و/رأس لفان/ تعدان خطوة رئيسية على طريق الاعتماد المتزايد على الطاقة المتجددة عالية الكفاءة.

من جانبه، رأى الدكتور سيف علي الحجري، المختص في مجال البيئة، في تصريح لوكالة الأنباء القطرية /قنا/، أن قرار قطر التوسع في إنتاج الكهرباء من الطاقة الشمسية أتى في الوقت المناسب بالتوازي مع ذروة تزايد الطلب على الطاقة من مختلف المصادر.

ولفت الدكتور الحجري إلى أن الحاجة الماسة للطاقة جعلت قطر تلعب أدوارا إقليمية ودولية لحل مسألة الطلب العالمي، وهو ما حدا بها إلى التوجه لتنويع مصادرها ورفع قدراتها الإنتاجية من الطاقة البديلة، من خلال الإعلان عن إنشاء محطة ضخمة لإنتاج الكهرباء من الطاقة الشمسية في /الخرسعة/ بقدرة 800 ميغاوات سنويا، والتي ستثمل نحو 10 في المئة من القدرات الإنتاجية للدولة.

وسيغطي مشروع محطة /الخرسعة/ الكبرى للطاقة الشمسية لإنتاج الكهرباء بتقنية الخلايا الكهروضوئية التي تم تدشينها اليوم، تقريبا نحو 10 بالمئة من احتياجات دولة قطر من الكهرباء، فيما تبلغ تكلفة المحطة التي تمتد على مساحة 10 كيلومترات مربعة نحو 1.7 مليار ريال.

ويأتي هذا المشروع ضمن جهود الدولة للحفاظ على الطاقة والبيئة، بما يضمن الموازنة بين منفعة الجيل الحالي ومنفعة الأجيال المقبلة، تماشيا مع رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030، كما أنه يعكس سياسات دولة قطر في تنويع مصادر إنتاج الطاقة، وزيادة الاعتماد على الطاقة المتجددة، والتزاماتها في ملف بطولة كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022.

يذكر أن هذا المشروع كان مطروحا بطريقة تنافسية على شركات عالمية لتقديم أفضل تقنية لتوليد الكهرباء من الطاقة الشمسية، وتعتبر الأسعار التي حصلت عليها الدولة لتوليد الكهرباء تنافسية والأفضل على مستوى العالم، بالإضافة إلى أن تكلفة إنتاج الكهرباء من هذه المحطة منافسة جدا، مقارنة بتوليد الكهرباء من الوقود التقليدي.

وأكد الدكتور الحجري أن قطر ماضية في رفع قدراتها من الطاقة البديلة عبر الإعلان عن مشروعين ضخمين في هذا المجال بـ /مسيعيد/ و/رأس لفان/، موضحا أن هذا التوجه يصب في خانة التزامات قطر بخصوص البصمة الكربونية والوصول بها إلى صفر في أفق العام 2050.

وشدد في هذا السياق إلى ضرورة الأخذ بعين الاعتبار التحديات التي تواجهها هذه الصناعة في قطر، خاصة في ظل الارتفاع الشديد لدرجات الحرارة، بالإضافة إلى مستويات الرطوبة والغبار التي تؤثر على الكميات المنتجة.

وأشار الدكتور الحجري إلى أن هناك وعيا في قطر بضرورة التوجه نحو استخدام الطاقة البديلة في عدد من المشاريع على غرار مشروعي /لوسيل/ و/مشيرب/، بالإضافة إلى توجه الأفراد في قطر إلى إنجاز محطات فردية لإنتاج الطاقة الشمسية في قطاعي الزراعة والصناعة والمنازل.

ومن المنتظر أن تدخل محطتا الطاقة الشمسية في “مسيعيد” و”رأس لفان” الصناعيتين طور الإنتاج نهاية 2024، ومن المتوقع أن تسهما في زيادة قدرة توليد الطاقة المتجددة في البلاد إلى 1.67 غيغاواط بنهاية 2024.

وستقوم شركة سامسونغ سي أند تي الكورية بتنفيذ هذا المشروع باستثمار بلغ 2.3 مليار ريال قطري أي (600 مليون دولار).
