“Qatar Creates” Brings Indian Comedy-Drama “Monsoon Wedding Musical” in Doha

Doha: The stage musical production of Mira Nair’s successful 2001 Indian comedy-drama, Monsoon Wedding will premiere in Doha on 15 November at the Abdul Azizi Nasser Theatre in Souq Waqif.
The musical will be presented by Qatar Creates events and the Qatar-MENASA 2022 Year of Culture, part of the lively cultural program under Qatar Creates for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and beyond.
Based on the Golden Globe-nominated film of the same name by Prolific filmmaker Mira Nair launched, Monsoon Wedding continues to enchant global audiences since its release over two decades ago.
Commenting on the upcoming global premiere, HE Chairperson of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani, the leading force behind Qatar Creates, said, “‘Monsoon Wedding’ is a story that inspires debate about the nature of life, identity and our place within an ever-changing world. It will be a pleasure to welcome director Mira Nair and the talented cast to Doha to inspire a sense of joy and unity among young and old as part of our Qatar Creates program.” Nair, whose independent films have earned her global recognition including an Academy Award nomination, said, “Following in the footsteps of the original film, ‘Monsoon Wedding Musical’ strikes a beautiful balance between silence and music, darkness and joy. At its core, this is a story about the love that we want to understand and that we all yearn for. I am deeply honored to stage its opening performances in Doha, at a time when the country turns into a meeting spot for global culture and entertainment during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.” Saad Al Hudaifi, executive director of Qatar Creates, noted, “We are delighted to bring the musical production of ‘Monsoon Wedding’ to Qatar audiences, especially those who love Bollywood and Indian dramas. الدوحة: تعرض في الخامس عشر من نوفمبر المقبل المسرحية الموسيقية من الفيلم الدرامي الكوميدي الهندي /زفاف مونسون/، وذلك على مسرح عبد العزيز ناصر في سوق واقف.
وتأتي المسرحية ضمن برنامج /قطر تبدع/ والعام الثقافي قطر ـ الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا وجنوب آسيا 2022، وذلك في إطار البرنامج الثقافي الزاخر بمناسبة استضافة قطر بطولة كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022 وما بعدها.
وتعيد المسرحية الموسيقية إحياء الفيلم العالمي المرشح لجائزة غولدن غلوب /زفاف مونسون/ للمخرجة ميرا ناير، الذي لا يزال منذ إطلاقه قبل أكثر من عشرين عاما يستحوذ على اهتمام الجماهير العالمية من خلال توليفة قوية تجمع بين التقاليد والحداثة.
وقالت سعادة الشيخة المياسة بنت حمد آل ثاني رئيس مجلس أمناء متاحف قطر، والتي تقام مبادرة /قطر تبدع/ تحت رعاية سعادتها: إن /زفاف مونسون/ قصة ملهمة تحاكي طبيعة الحياة، والهوية، والانتماء في ظل هذا العالم المتغير بشكل مستمر، مرحبة بالمخرجة ميرا ناير وفريق العمل من المواهب المبدعة في قطر، لإضفاء طابع من الفرح والوحدة بين الصغار والكبار، وذلك كجزء من مبادرة /قطر تبدع/.
من جانبه، أعربت ميرا ناير، مخرجة الفيلم عن سعادتها بأن يقام العرض الأول للمسرحية الموسيقية في الدوحة، في وقت تتحول فيه دولة قطر إلى مكان تلتقي فيه مختلف الثقافات والفعاليات الترفيهية العالمية أثناء إقامة بطولة كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022.
وفي السياق ذاته، قال سعد الهديفي المدير التنفيذي لمبادرة /قطر تبدع/: إن المسرحية الموسيقية تحاكي تحديات الحياة والرؤية الاجتماعية للاختلافات بين الشرق والغرب بأسلوب فريد ومعاصر؛ ليصبح هذا العرض الموسيقي أحد أبرز العروض الفنية في البرنامج المعد ليناسب الجماهير ومحبي بوليوود والأفلام الهندية من جميع الأعمار بمناسبة كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022.
