Doha: Winners of an art competition to raise awareness of the effects of plastic-use have been announced. The art competition was held by Qatar Foundation’s Earthna Center for a Sustainable Future, in collaboration with the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH), in an effort to encourage positive climate action towards building healthier cities.
A total of six winners of the WISH – Earthna Plastics Art Competition were selected by a panel of judges comprising representatives from across Qatar Foundation that assessed the entries for creativity, educational and awareness value, adherence to competition criteria, and relevance to the WISH summit theme “Healing the Future”. The winning entries were showcased at a gallery during WISH 2022 that took place from October 4-6.
The winners in the Adults Category are: first place: Doha Quest for ‘Still Sprint’; second place: Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha for ‘Whale’; third place: Dr. Yasser Al Hamidi Team; Texas A&M University at Qatar and Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar students for ‘Plastic Lungs Sculpture.’ In the Juniors Category, winners are, first place: Kamla Bu Qarara and Bayan Arabi from Michael E. DeBakey High School in Qatar for ‘Embryonis Venenum’; second place: Minha Zulfiqar and Mohammed Abdulla from Michael E. DeBakey High School in Qatar for ‘Microplastics and Tap/Bottled Water Contamination’; third place: Activists in Action from Qatar Academy Doha Primary School for ‘What’s for Dinner?/You are what you eat.’ “Art and culture will always be integral parts of sustainable development. They capture, through storytelling, the attention of people to solidify the reality and realization that climate change and health are connected to us all, and that it is within our reach to be part of the solution,” said Dr. Gonzalo Castro de la Mata, Executive Director of Earthna.
He added: “Building on our efforts towards advocating for and enabling sustainable mindsets and behaviors, we hope that this competition will move the community towards more positive environmental action. We are proud that the exhibit was a resounding success at WISH 2022.” The WISH – Earthna Plastics Art Competition, that opened earlier this year, involved the local community in creating artworks focused on climate change and health one of the topics that was discussed at WISH 2022.
The competition saw participation from a diverse range of community members including activists, artists, students, educators, health professionals, and engineers. Entries covered a broad spectrum of health implications resulting from plastic usage, including water pollution, microplastics and fetal development, threats to marine environment, and the challenge of non-biodegradable materials, among others.
All submissions were created with reused or recycled plastic materials, and were specifically designed to highlight the value of individual effort and commitment to conscious, environmentally-friendly practices.
Sultana Afdhal, CEO of WISH, highlighted that it had been exciting to see the thought, enthusiasm and originality of the submissions. She said: “This competition has provided us with an innovative way to show the importance of acknowledging the serious problems we will face if we continue to ignore the links between our health and protecting our planet.”

الدوحة: أعلن مركز /إرثنا/، عضو مؤسسة قطر للتربية والعلوم وتنمية المجتمع، ومؤتمر القمة العالمي للابتكار في الرعاية الصحية /ويش/ أسماء الفائزين في مسابقتهما الفنية /ويش – إرثنا/ التي تهدف لرفع مستوى الوعي بآثار استخدام البلاستيك على الصحة في جميع أنحاء العالم، وتشجيع العمل المناخي الإيجابي نحو بناء مدن صحية.
واختارت لجنة التحكيم، التي تألفت من ممثلين عن عدد من الكيانات التابعة لمؤسسة قطر، ثلاثة فائزين من فئة البالغين وثلاثة فائزين من فئة اليافعين، بناء على مستوى إبداع مشاركاتهم وقيمتها الفنية وتفرد محتواها ومدى ارتباطها بشعار قمة ويش 2022 “نحو مستقبل مفعم بالحياة”، والتزامها بمعايير المسابقة واشتراط الإسهام في الوعي والتثقيف.
وفاز بالمركز الأول في المسابقة عن فئة البالغين فريق /الدوحة كويست/ عن منحوتة /العدو الثابت/، وجاء في المركز الثاني فندق /راديسون بلو الدوحة/ عن تصميم “كن من مناصري الكوكب الأزرق، كن نقيا، ولا تدع البلاستيك يقتل الحياة تحت الماء”، بينما فاز بالمركز الثالث فريق الدكتور /ياسر الحميدي/ من جامعة تكساس إي آند إم في قطر، وطلاب جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث كلية فنون التصميم في قطر، عن تصميم /رئتان من البلاستيك/.
وفي فئة اليافعين، فاز بالمركز الأول كل من كاملة بو قرارة وبيان عربي من مدرسة /مايكل إي ديبكي/ الثانوية عن منحوتة /الجنين المسموم/، وجاء في المركز الثاني منحة ذو الفقار ومحمد عبدالله من المدرسة نفسها عن تصميم /البلاستيك الدقيق وتلوث الجهاز الهضمي/، بينما فاز بالمركز الثالث نشطاء أكاديمية قطر – الدوحة التابعة لمؤسسة قطر عن عملهم الفني /ماذا أعددنا للعشاء؟/.
وشهدت المسابقة مشاركة مجموعة متنوعة من أفراد المجتمع، لا سيما النشطاء في مجال حماية البيئة، والطلاب، والمعلمين، والعاملين في القطاع الصحي، والمهندسين، والفنانين. وسلطت المشاركات الضوء على الجوانب العديدة لتأثير استخدام البلاستيك على الصحة، ومنها تلوث المياه، والتهديدات التي تتعرض لها البيئة البحرية، والتأثيرات على نمو الأجنة، والتحديات الناجمة عن استخدام المواد غير القابلة للتحلل الحيوي، وغيرها من الجوانب.
وصنعت جميع الأعمال الفنية المشاركة من مواد بلاستيكية معاد استخدامها أو تدويرها، حيث تم تصميمها خصيصا لإبراز قيمة الجهود الفردية وأهمية الالتزام بالممارسات الواعية والصديقة للبيئة التي تساهم في تعزيز رفاه المجتمع ككل.
وأكد الدكتور غونزالو كاسترو دي لا ماتا المدير التنفيذي لمركز /إرثنا/، أن الفن والثقافة جزء لا يتجزأ من التنمية المستدامة لقدرتهما على جذب اهتمام أفراد المجتمع من خلال ترسيخ الارتباط الوثيق بين قضيتي تغير المناخ والصحة وصلة ذلك بنا جميعا ودورنا في أن نكون جزءًا من الحل. وأعرب عن أمله أن تحفز هذه المسابقة أفراد المجتمع لاتباع سلوك بيئي أكثر إيجابية، وأن تستطيع الجهود المبذولة تغيير السلوكيات ودعمها لتكون مستدامة أكثر.
من جانبها، عبرت سلطانة أفضل الرئيس التنفيذي لـ /ويش/ عن سعادتها برؤية الأفكار المبتكرة للمشاركين في المسابقة، وحماسهم وأصالة أعمالهم، مشيرة إلى أن هذه المسابقة منحت المشاركين طريقة مبتكرة لتسليط الضوء على التحديات الخطيرة التي سنواجهها في حال تجاهلنا الروابط بين صحتنا وحماية كوكبنا.
وكانت مسابقة /ويش – إرثنا/ لتعزيز الوعي بآثار البلاستيك تم افتتاحها في وقت سابق من العام الجاري لإشراك أفراد المجتمع المحلي في إنشاء أعمال فنية حول تغير المناخ والصحة، وهو أحد الموضوعات التي تمت مناقشتها في قمة /ويش 2022/.
