“Coffee for Two – Cultures in Dialogue” Exhibition Opens in Katara

Doha: Amid an atmosphere full of the aroma of fine Arabic coffee, activities of the exhibition “Coffee for Two – Cultures in Dialogue” opened at the Cultural Village Foundation – Katara on Sunday evening.

The exhibition, which is held building 47 until Sept. 21, is part of the cultural initiative launched by the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al-Thani Museum in 2018 dubbed “The Majlis Cultures in Dialogue”. It was launched in France and has toured various European capitals, including Paris, Vienna, and Valletta, among others.

The opening of the exhibition was attended by Katara General Manager Prof. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, Doha-based UNESCO Gulf States and Yemen Office Director Salah Khaled, Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Museum officials, a number of Their Excellencies Ambassadors accredited to the State, and a group of interested people.

The exhibition, which is held within the framework of the cultural partnership between Katara and the UNESCO Regional Office in Doha, celebrates the culture and traditions of coffee as a symbol of generosity and a universal language that connects people around the world, and promotes cultural exchange and social cohesion. It features a selection of around 50 artefacts related to the preparation and making of ancient coffee, as well as a collection of photos and videos, which explore cultural practices related to Arabic coffee roasted at home.

The exhibition “Coffee for Two – Cultures in Dialogue” searches into the history of the well-known drink with maps that trace the route of coffee starting from Ethiopia, then the Arabian Peninsula and Egypt, passing through the prosperous plantations of Latin America before becoming a dominant drink in Europe in the seventeenth century.

Moreover, the exhibition highlights the evolution of coffee over time and its adaptation to modern times, where archival photographs from the collection of the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al-Thani Museum, in comparison with contemporary snapshots of coffee consumption on the go, show how knowledge and traditions are constantly merging to create culture and social interaction.

HE Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim bin Faisal Al-Thani, Founder and Chairman of the Museum’s Board of Trustees, said that we aim from this exhibition, which is being held this year in coincidence with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, to bring the exhibition “The Majlis Cultures in Dialogue” to Qatar, starting with this special exhibition in Katara because it symbolizes the culture of hospitality in general and Arab hospitality in particular.

His Excellency added that visitors from all over the world are invited to sit in the Majlis to listen to stories, engage in dialogues and exchange ideas about what they see, by sharing impressions of the exhibition and getting to know cultures to strengthen international, Arab and Islamic relations, through art and antiques in order to spread the message of peace and prosperity and expand our understanding of other people and places.

For his part, Katara general manager Prof. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti praised the exhibition and its valuable and rich exhibits, which shed light on coffee as a common culture, not only in the Arab region, but among the peoples of the entire world.

Al Sulaiti added that coffee has its customs, traditions and symbolism that differ from one country to another, yet regardless of culture, coffee spreads a culture of celebration and social cohesion.

He affirmed Katara’s keenness to support, sponsor and host events that enhance its humanitarian mission of building bridges of communication amongst peoples, noting that it is not the first time that the Cultural Village Foundation has cooperated with the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al-Thani Museum; previous cooperation has taken place in past exhibitions and participations in Katara festivals annually.

On the sidelines of the exhibition, a discussion session was held in a central space in the exhibition; forming a Majlis discussing the importance of coffee in different cultures, and with the participation of a number of attendees such as Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Doha for the Gulf States and Yemen Salah Khaled. The Director explained that by including an element “Arabic coffee; a symbol of generosity” as well as the concept of Majlis in 2015 on the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UNESCO is emphasizing the cultural functions of Arabic coffee as an expression of hospitality, generosity, and social etiquette. Moreover, Arabic Coffee encourages dialogue, exchange of knowledge and experiences, as well as mutual respect amongst cultures, religions and societies. Also, Khaled stressed that coffee is an important component of a common culture transmitted from generation to generation, giving societies a sense of identity and continuity.

In turn, HE Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Qatar Karin Fichtinger Grohe talked about coffee and how it is present in so many different world cultures.

Director of the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al-Thani Museum Claudio Cravero also gave a speech on the history and importance of Arabic coffee, so much so that it was inscribed on the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

The Majlis provides an opportunity to broaden our understanding of other people’s tastes and coffee habits, bringing people together, socially networking and exchanging ideas for a constructive intercultural dialogue.

It is worth noting that “Arabic coffee; the symbol of generosity” was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015, based on the nomination submitted by the State of Qatar and a number of Arab countries, namely Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman. In fact, coffee serves as an important aspect of hospitality in Arab societies, as well as a ceremonial act of generosity, where coffee is prepared in front of guests, and enjoyed by men and women from all segments of society, especially in their homes or in the Majlis, which is the social space found in every Arab home.

Additionally, there are as many forms and flavors of coffee in different countries and cultures, as there are ways to prepare and drink it. Some drink it fast, whilst others do so slowly. Some types of coffee are free from any additives, while there are others with additives such as cardamom or other special flavorings, be it with sugar only, or with both milk and sugar. Furthermore, some coffee types are hot and some are cold. Some are served in large glasses whereas others in smaller glasses.

الدوحة: وسط اجواء مفعمة برائحة القهوة العربية الزكية ،انطلقت مساء الأمس، فعاليات معرض /قهوة لشخصين – حوار الثقافات/ بالمؤسسة العامة للحي الثقافي /كتارا/ والذي يستمر حتى 21 سبتمبر المقبل.

ويعتبر المعرض الذي يقام في المبنى 47 جزءا من المبادرة الثقافية التي أطلقها متحف الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم آل ثاني، باسم المعرض الدولي المتنقل /المجلس – حوار الثقافات/ في عام 2018، والذي وصل إلى ست عواصم أوروبية.

حضر افتتاح المعرض الدكتور خالد بن إبراهيم السليطي مدير عام المؤسسة العامة للحي الثقافي، والسيد صلاح خالد مدير مكتب منظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والعلم والثقافة /اليونسكو/ الإقليمي في الدوحة لدول الخليج واليمن،ومسؤولو متحف الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم وعدد من أصحاب السعادة السفراء المعتمدين لدى الدولة وجمع من المهتمين.

ويأتي هذا المعرض، في إطار الشراكة الثقافية بين المؤسسة العامة للحي الثقافي ومكتب منظمة /اليونسكو/ الإقليمي في الدوحة لدول الخليج واليمن، ليحتفي بالثقافة والتقاليد حول مشروب القهوة كلغة عالمية تربط الناس حول العالم، ويعزز التبادل الثقافي، والتماسك الاجتماعي.

ويضم المعرض حوالي 50 قطعة تراثية تتعلق بإعداد وصناعة القهوة قديما، فضلا عن مجموعة من الصور ومقاطع الفيديو، التي تستكشف الممارسات الثقافية المتعلقة بالقهوة العربية المحمصة في المنزل.

وينقب معرض /قهوة لشخصين – حوار الثقافات/ في تاريخ المشروب المعروف مع الخرائط التي تتبع طريق القهوة بدءا من إثيوبيا ثم شبه الجزيرة العربية ومصر، مرورا بالمزارع المزدهرة في أمريكا اللاتينية قبل أن تصبح مشروبا مهيمنا في أوروبا في القرن السابع عشر.

علاوة على ذلك، يسلط المعرض الضوء على تطور القهوة بمرور الوقت وتكيفها مع العصر الحديث، حيث تُظهر الصور الأرشيفية من مجموعة متحف الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم آل ثاني، بالمقارنة مع اللقطات المعاصرة لاستهلاك القهوة أثناء التنقل، كيف تندمج المعرفة والتقاليد باستمرار لخلق الثقافة والتفاعل الاجتماعي.

وقال سعادة الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم بن فيصل آل ثاني مؤسس ورئيس مجلس أمناء متحف الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم آل ثاني في قطر، إننا نهدف من هذا المعرض الذي يقام هذا العام، بالتزامن مع بطولة كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022، إلى جلب معرض /المجلس – حوار الثقافات/ إلى قطر، بدءًا من هذا المعرض الخاص في الحي الثقافي /كتارا/، لأنه يرمز إلى ثقافة الضيافة بشكل عام والضيافة العربية بشكل خاص.

وأضاف سعادته أن الزوار من جميع أنحاء العالم مدعوون إلى الجلوس في /المجلس/ للاستماع إلى القصص والدخول في الحوارات وتبادل الأفكار حول ما يرونه، من خلال تبادل انطباعات المعرض والتعرف على الثقافات لتعزيز العلاقات الدولية والعربية والإسلامية، من خلال الفن والتحف بهدف نشر رسالة السلام والازدهار وتوسيع فهمنا للأشخاص والأماكن الأخرى.

ومن جانبه، أشاد الدكتور خالد بن إبراهيم السليطي مدير عام /كتارا/، بالمعرض وما يضمه من معروضات ومعلومات قيمة وثرية، تسلط الضوء على القهوة كثقافة مشتركة بين شعوب العالم أجمع وليس فقط في المنطقة العربية، مضيفا أن القهوة لها عادات وتقاليد ومدلولات تختلف من بلد إلى آخر، ولكنها تشترك في تعزيز ثقافة الاحتفاء والترابط الاجتماعي.

وأكد السليطي حرص /كتارا/ على دعم ورعاية واستضافة مختلف الفعاليات التي تعزز رسالتها الإنسانية في مد جسور التواصل بين الشعوب، مشيرا إلى أنها ليست المرة الأولى التي تتعاون فيها المؤسسة العامة للحي الثقافي مع متحف الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم آل ثاني فقد سبق هذا المعرض العديد من المعارض والمشاركات في مهرجانات /كتارا/ السنوية.

وعلى هامش المعرض عقدت جلسة نقاشية في مساحة مركزية مخصصة للمناقشات في المعرض على شكل /مجلس/ حول أهمية القهوة في الثقافات المختلفة شارك فيه عدد من الحضور، حيث أوضح السيد صلاح خالد مدير مكتب اليونسكو الإقليمي في الدوحة لدول الخليج واليمن أنه من خلال إدراج عنصر “القهوة العربية، رمز الكرم”، وعنصر المجلس في عام 2015 على قائمة التراث الثقافي غير المادي لمنظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والعلم والثقافة /اليونسكو/ شددت اللجنة الحكومية الدولية التابعة لليونسكو لصون التراث الثقافي غير المادي، على أن الوظائف الثقافية للقهوة العربية هي تعبير عن كرم الضيافة والكرم وآداب السلوك الاجتماعي، كما أنها تشجع الحوار وتبادل المعرفة والخبرات والاحترام المتبادل بين الثقافات والأديان والمجتمعات، مؤكدا أن القهوة عنصر مهم في الثقافة المشتركة تنتقل من جيل إلى جيل، مما يمنح المجتمعات إحساسا بالهوية والاستمرارية.

وبدورها، تحدثت سعادة السيدة كارين فيشتنجر غروهي سفيرة جمهورية النمسا لدى الدولة في الجلسة عن القهوة وحضورها في الثقافات العالمية المختلفة.

كما قدم السيد كلوديو كرافيرو مدير متحف الشيخ فيصل بن قاسم آل ثاني، كلمة مماثلة عن تاريخ وأهمية القهوة العربية حتى تم تسجيلها على قائمة التراث العالمي الثقافي غير المادي.

ويتيح /المجلس/، الفرصة لتوسيع آفاق فهمنا لأذواق الآخرين وعادات القهوة، وجمع الناس معا للتواصل الاجتماعي وتبادل الأفكار من أجل الحوار البناء بين الثقافات.

جدير بالذكر أنه تم إدراج “القهوة العربية، رمز الكرم” في قائمة اليونسكو التمثيلية للتراث الثقافي غير المادي للبشرية في عام 2015، بناء على الترشيح المقدم من دولة قطر وعدد من الدول العربية وهي المملكة العربية السعودية والإمارات العربية المتحدة وسلطنة عمان، وتعتبر القهوة جانبا مهما من جوانب الضيافة في المجتمعات العربية وعملا احتفاليا من الكرم، حيث يتم تحضير القهوة أمام الضيوف، ويستمتع بها الرجال والنساء من جميع شرائح المجتمع، ولا سيما في منازلهم أو في المجلس، وهو الفضاء الاجتماعي الموجود في كل منزل عربي.

وتتعدد أشكال القهوة ونكهاتها باختلاف الدول والثقافات، نظرا لوجود العديد من الطرق لتحضيرها واحتسائها، على سبيل المثال، بعضها سريع، وبعضها بطيء، وبعضها خالية من أية اضافات تكون مرة او مضافا لها الهيل أو مطيبات اخرى خاصة أو بالسكر أو بالحليب والسكر، وبعضها ساخن والبعض الآخر بارد، والبعض الآخر يتم تقديمه في أكواب كبيرة أو أكواب أصغر.
