Qatar Museums Adds Collection of 40 New Artworks to ‘Public Art Program’

Doha: Qatar Museums (QM) announced Wednesday a program of new public artworks by celebrated Qatari, regional and international artists that will be presented throughout Doha and the nation, as part of the year-round initiative titled “Qatar Creates – a National Cultural Movement” curates, promotes, and celebrates the diversity of cultural activities in Qatar.

Qatar Museums said in a statement that the country and its public spaces will be transformed into a vast open-air art museum stretching from its desert to the bustling Souq Waqif. The collection includes around 40 new artworks to bring the total number of public artworks to more than 100 on view for locals and the 1.5 million visitors who are expected to travel to Doha for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

HE Chairperson of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani comments: “The addition of 40 new, major works of public art this fall is a significant milestone for Qatars public art program. Public art is one of our most prominent demonstrations of cultural exchange, where we present works from artists of all nationalities and backgrounds. From the arrivals at the best airport in the world ‘Hamad International Airport’ to every neighborhood in our nation, public art is there to make your experience unique.” “These works vary in size and form, and they encompass a wide range of subject matter, but all further our mission to make art more accessible, engage our publics, celebrate our heritage, and embrace the cultures of others. More importantly, artists from every corner of the world – representing all continents – have been invited to express their artistic creativity with our very own diverse population,” HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani added.

“Our longstanding commitment to public art is visible across Qatar, and we hope these works will be welcomed by locals and enhance the experiences had by the millions of visitors we expect to welcome to Doha this year,” Her Excellency stressed.

The statement added that Qatar Museums is working on accomplishing the project in cooperation with various state organizations including the Hamad International Airport, Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, Public Works Authority (Ashghal) to display the artworks in a variety of densely-populated public spaces and unexpected public spots designed to surprise and please passers-by including parks, shopping malls, educational and sports facilities, the Hamad International Airport, Metro stations as well as stadiums to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Among the most prominent public artworks to be displayed are multi-colored, granite-made Sculptures of Maqam I, Maqam II and Maqam III by Lebanese artist Simone Fattal; Dugong (2022), a massive, approximately 21 metre high and 31 metre wide polychromed mirror-polished stainless-steel sculpture by American artist Jeff Koons in the form of a Dugong, the marine mammal that has inhabited the waters surrounding Qatar’s peninsula for centuries, on view at Al Masrah Park; along with Iraqi sculptor Ahmed Al Bahranis Dugong Family installation in Al Ruwais celebrating the dugong, an endangered marine mammal native to Qatars waters.

The newly introduced artworks also include a collection of contemporary sculptures and pieces by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, including “My Soul Blooms Forever”, “Flowers that speak all about my heart, “Dancing Pumpkin” and “Daffodil Garden”, along with a sculpture specially created for the desert by Olafur Eliasson and is set to be displayed in the vicinity of the Islamic Art Museum Park.

Among the new additions also come German artist Catarina Fritsch’s “The Rooster” at the Sheraton Doha, and the sculptures by Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto, including an artwork in the Qatari desert entitled “Lazy Turtle and a Model of the Earth”, and “Earth Cocoon, Our Goal is Life” in tandem with KAWS’ “The Promise 2022”, Depicting the American artists companion figures in a tender gesture suggesting a parent carefully passing the globe to the hands of a child.

“Mountains of Doha” by Swiss Ugo Rondinon, will go on view on the facade of Ras Abu Aboud Beach in Doha near Stadium 974, along with US Rashid Johnson’s mosaic artwork “Qatari Walls – Village of the Sun” .

Inspired by a group of four major modern buildings in Doha, Shezad Dawood’s “Doha Modern Games” will be exhibited in the Theater Park, in addition to “Naseem” (Breeze) by Kuwaiti artist Munira Al Qadiri, a huge diorama of microscopic organisms in the fossilized algae in the Arabian Peninsula, which will go on view along the northern shore of the Western Gulf.

The “Rock on Top of Another Rock” Sculpture by Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss will be displayed in the National Theater. The sculpture depicts two stacked rocks weighing about 30 tons balanced without a mainstay.

At the Corniche Park, a series of sculptures by Korean artist Suki Seokyeong Kang under the title of “Here, We Hear” will motivate onlookers to gather and interact with each other, while “I Live Under Your Sky,” by Indian Shilpa Gupta will be exhibited at the 974 Stadium along with American Lawrence Weiner’s “All Stars in the Sky Have the Same Face”.

The program will exhibit Qatar artist Shuaa Ali’s “Equilibrium” in Msheireb (Downtown Doha) and “Ma’alem” (Features) in the Grand Hamad Courtyard along with “We, She and He” by Lebanese artist Najla Al Zein in Al A’alam Yard on the Corniche Road and US artist Vai Togod’s “Clay Square”, which comprises 17 hand-made sculptures, in the vicinity of the National Theater.

Late Austrian artist Franz West’s biggest piece “Gekrose”, a giant bright-colored aluminum sculpture carved in 2011, will definitely lure and stun spectators at the theater Park on Corniche Road.

On the interface of the Arab Museum of Modern Art, Iraqi artist Adel Abidin’s visual piece “They Asked me to Change it and I Agreed” along with ‘The Ship’ by Egyptian artist Adam Hanin and ‘Fertile Crescent Guard’ by late Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah will be exhibited. Qatari artist Shouq Al-Mana’s “Egal” will be installed along the Lusail Marina Promenade as a tribute to Qatars history and traditions.

Director of Public Art Management at Qatar Museum, Abdulrahman Al Ishaq said that the introduction of more than 40 artworks to the public Art Program will transform Doha and other Qatari cities into a dynamic urban painting to assure that the program boosts the existence of art everywhere, not only at museums and exhibitions.

Qatar has been among the pioneering countries in the Arabian Gulf to launch a comprehensive program for public art with the aim of making art part of everyday life. The program includes more than 100 artworks created by more than 60 artists from Qatar and the Middle East, North Africa and worldwide.

Among the most outstanding artworks come “Sculpture 7” and Sculpture “East-West, West-East” by Ritchard Sierra at the Islamic Art Museum Park; “Hawk” (2021) by Tom Klassen at the Hamad International Airport; “A Blessing in Disguise” by Ghada Al Khater at the Fire Station Museum along with Bruce Nauman’s “Untitled” at M7 and Ahmed Al Bahrani’s “Banner of Glory” at Qatar National Museum; “Lamp Bear” by Swiss artist Urs Fischer at the Hamad International Airport; “Ghandhi’sThree Monkeys” by Subodh Gupta at Qatara; Louise Bourgeois’ “Maman” at Qatar National Convention Centre; Damien Hirsts “The Miraculous Journey” in front of Sidra Medicine Center, Saloua Raouda Choucair’s “Seat” at the Islamic Art Museum Park and “The Flying Man” by Diaa Al Azzawi at the Hamad International Airport.

الدوحة: أعلنت /متاحف قطر/ عن برنامج لأعمال الفن العام الجديدة التي تم تكليف فنانين قطريين وإقليميين وعالميين بتصميمها، بحيث يتم تقديم أعمالهم في مدينة الدوحة ومختلف أنحاء الدولة، وذلك في إطار مبادرة /قطر تبدع – الحركة الثقافية الوطنية/ التي تستمر على مدار العام، وترعى وتروج وتحتفي بتنوع الأنشطة الثقافية في دولة قطر.

وأوضحت /متاحف قطر/ في بيان، أن الأماكن والساحات العامة في البلاد من الصحراء إلى مركز المدينة ستتحول إلى متحف فني مفتوح في الهواء الطلق، حيث تضيف المتاحف حوالي 40 عملا فنيا جديدا، لتصل مجموعة أعمال الفن العام إلى أكثر من 100 عمل فني في مختلف أرجاء البلاد، وستعرض للمجتمع القطري والزائرين، حيث يتوقع قدوم 1.5 مليون زائر إلى الدوحة للمشاركة في بطولة كأس العالم FIFA قطر 2022.

وقالت سعادة الشيخة المياسة بنت حمد آل ثاني رئيس مجلس أمناء متاحف قطر: “تعد إضافة 40 عملا فنيا رئيسيا جديدا هذا الخريف علامة بارزة لبرنامج الفن العام في متاحف قطر، والذي يعد من أبرز مظاهر التبادل الثقافي لدينا، حيث نقدم أعمالا لفنانين من مختلف الجنسيات والخلفيات الثقافية”.مضيفة: “الفن العام موجود لإثراء تجربتكم أينما توجهتم، من وصولكم إلى أفضل مطار في العالم، مطار حمد الدولي، إلى كل حي من أحياء البلاد”.

وأضافت سعادتها أن هذه الأعمال الجديدة تختلف من حيث حجمها وشكلها، وتشمل مجموعة واسعة من الموضوعات، ما يعزز مهمة /متاحف قطر/ لجعل الفن أكثر قربا من الجماهير، وتشجيعهم على المشاركة فيه والاحتفال بتراثنا، واحتضان ثقافات الآخرين.

وأشارت رئيس مجلس أمناء متاحف قطر إلى أنه جرى دعوة فنانين من كل بقاع العالم ليمثلوا مختلف القارات؛ للتعبير عن إبداعهم الفني منضمين في ذلك إلى مجتمعنا المتنوع أصلا.

وأكدت أن التزام /متاحف قطر/ بالفن العام واضح في جميع أنحاء البلاد، معربة عن أملها في ترحيب المجتمع القطري بهذه الأعمال، التي تسهم في إثراء التجارب التي سيعيشها ملايين الزوار، الذين نتوقع استقبالهم في الدوحة هذا العام.

وذكر البيان أن /متاحف قطر/ تعمل على إنجاز برنامج الفن العام بالتعاون مع عدة جهات في الدولة، بما في ذلك مطار حمد الدولي، واللجنة العليا للمشاريع والإرث، وهيئة الأشغال العامة (أشغال) لعرض الأعمال الفنية في مجموعة متنوعة من الأماكن العامة المكتظة بالناس والفضاءات العامة غير المتوقعة والمصممة لمفاجأة المارة وإسعادهم، بما في ذلك الحدائق، ومناطق التسوق، والمرافق التعليمية والرياضية، ومطار حمد الدولي، ومحطات المترو، بالإضافة إلى الملاعب التي ستستضيف مباريات كأس العالم.

ويتضمن برنامج الفن العام عرض أعمال فنانين عالميين وإقليميين وقطريين، وتشمل أبرز الأعمال الفنية العامة الجديدة: منحوتات مقام 1، ومقام 2، ومقام 3 للفنانة اللبنانية سيمون فتال، من الغرانيت باللون الأزرق بأشكال متنوعة، وبقرة البحر “دوجون”، وهو تمثال ضخم يبلغ ارتفاعه حوالي 21 مترا وعرضه 31 مترا من الفولاذ المقاوم للصدأ المصقول متعدد الألوان، من تصميم الفنان الأمريكي جيف كونز، على شكل بقرة البحر “الأطوم”، وهي من الثدييات البحرية التي سكنت المياه المحيطة بشبه جزيرة قطر لعدة قرون، وسيعرض العمل الفني في حديقة المسرح، بالإضافة إلى قطعة النحات العراقي الفنية، أحمد البحراني “عائلة بقر البحر” في الرويس.

كما تتضمن الأعمال الجديدة مجموعة من المنحوتات والأعمال الفنية المعاصرة من إبداع الفنانة اليابانية يايوي كوساما، بما في ذلك “روحي تزهر للأبد”، و”الوردة التي تروي حكاية قلبي”، و”اليقطينة الراقصة، و”حديقة النرجس”، ومن بين أعمال أخرى معروضة في المساحات المحيطة بمتحف الفن الإسلامي وحديقته، عمل فني مصمم خصيصا للصحراء من تصميم الفنان أولافور إلياسون.

ومن الأعمال القطعة الفنية الزرقاء التي تم عرضها مؤخرا للفنانة الألمانية كاتارينا فريتش “الديك” في شيراتون الدوحة، وأعمال الفنان البرازيلي إرنستو نيتو، بما في ذلك عمل فني في الصحراء القطرية بعنوان “السلحفاة الكسولة ونموذج للأرض”، و”شرنقة الأرض، هدفنا هو الحياة”، وعمل الفنان KAWS بعنوان “الوعد 2022″، ويصور الشخصيات المصاحبة لأعمال الفنان، حيث يقوم أحد الوالدين بتمرير الكرة الأرضية بعناية إلى يدي طفل، وهذا العمل الفني بتكليف من المشروع المستقبلي /دد، متحف الأطفال في قطر/، وسيعرض في حديقة المتحف.

أما العمل الفني “جبال الدوحة” للسويسري أوغو روندينون، فيعرض على واجهة شاطئ راس أبو عبود في الدوحة بالقرب من استاد 974، بالإضافة إلى عمل فني تركيبي من الفسيفساء مكون من أربعة جدران بعنوان “الجدران القطرية – قرية الشمس” للأمريكي رشيد جونسون.

ويعد العمل الفني “ألعاب الدوحة الحديثة”، بمثابة ألعاب أطفال من وحي مجموعة من أربعة مبان عصرية رئيسية في الدوحة، من تصميم الفنان شيزاد داود في حديقة المسرح، إلى جانب العمل الفني /نسيم/ للكويتية منيرة القديري، وهو مجسم ضخم لكائنات حية مجهرية موجودة في الطحالب البحرية المتحجرة في شبه الجزيرة العربية، والذي سيعرض على طول الشاطئ الشمالي للخليج الغربي، فيما تعرض آخر أعمال الثنائي السويسري بيتر فيشلي وديفيد فايس منحوتة “صخرة فوق الأخرى”، وهي عبارة عن صخرتين يبلغ وزنهما حوالي 30 طنا مكدستين ومتوازنتين دون أي دعامة في المسرح الوطني.

وتحفز سلسلة منحوتات للفنانة الكورية سوكي سيوكيونغ كانغ بعنوان “نسمع هنا” في حديقة الكورنيش المتفرجين على التجمع والتفاعل مع بعضهم البعض، أما “أعيش تحت سمائك”، فهو عمل فني ضوئي للهندية شيلبا غوبتا على شكل جملة متحركة يتألق خط يدها بكتابة جملة من كتاب بالاسم نفسه في ثلاث لغات متشابكة، ويعرض هذا العمل الفني في ملعب 974، والذي يحتضن كذلك عمل الأمريكي لورانس وينر “كل النجوم في السماء لها نفس الوجه”.

وتقدم القطرية شعاع علي ضمن هذه الإبداعات عملين هما “توازن” ويعرض في مشيرب، و”معالم” ويعرض في ساحة حمد الكبير، كما يعرض عمل اللبنانية نجلاء الزين “نحن، هي وهو” في ساحة الأعلام على الكورنيش، والعمل الفني “ساحة الصلصال” للأمريكية فاي توغود، وهو عبارة عن عرض لـ 17 منحوتة يدوية، حول موقع المسرح الوطني.

ويعتبر العمل الفني “جيكروز”، الذي أبدعه الفنان النمساوي الراحل فرانز ويست في عام 2011 وهو أكبر أعماله، وهو منحوتة ضخمة من الألومنيوم الملحوم، مهيبة وغريبة في آن واحد، بألوان وردية زاهية، تجذب المشاهدين وتذهلهم في حديقة المسرح.

وعلى واجهة متحف: المتحف العربي للفن الحديث، يعرض العمل الفني الضوئي للعراقي عادل عابدين “طلبوا مني أن أغيرها ووافقت”، إلى جانب العملين الفنيين الموجودين بالمكان عينه، وهما “السفينة” للمصري آدم حنين، و”حارس الهلال الخصيب” للفنان العراقي الراحل إسماعيل فتاح، ليتم تثبيت العمل الفني “عقال” للفنانة القطرية شوق المانع، على ممشى مرسى لوسيل، وهو بمثابة تكريم لتاريخ دولة قطر وتقاليدها.

وبدوره، قال المهندس عبد الرحمن أحمد آل إسحاق، مدير إدارة الفن العام في متاحف قطر: إن إضافة أكثر من 40 عملا جديدا للفن العام يحول الدوحة وغيرها من المدن القطرية إلى لوحة حضرية ديناميكية، ليؤكد أن برنامج الفن العام في متاحف قطر يعزز حضور الفن في كل مكان حولنا، ولا يقتصر على المتاحف والمعارض.

جدير بالذكر أن دولة قطر أصبحت من أولى الدول في الخليج العربي التي أنشأت برنامجا شاملا للفن العام المعاصر، حتى الآن؛ بهدف جعل الفن جزءا من الحياة اليومية، وقد نما البرنامج ليشمل ما يقرب من 100 عمل فني لأكثر من 60 فنانا من قطر، ومنطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا ومختلف أرجاء المعمورة.

وتشمل أبرز الأعمال الحالية منحوتة “7” في حديقة متحف الفن الإسلامي و”شرق – غرب / غرب – شرق” في زكريت لريتشارد سيرا، و”صقر” (2021) لتوم كلاسن في مطار حمد الدولي، و”رب ضارة نافعة” لغادة الخاطر في مطافئ -مقر الفنانين ، وعمل لبروس نومان “بدون عنوان” (خندق، عمود، حفرة، نفق وحجرة) في مركز قطر الإبداعي للابتكار وريادة الأعمال (M7)، و”راية المجد” لأحمد البحراني في متحف قطر الوطني، ودمية “الدب المصباح” لأورس فيشر في مطار حمد الدولي، و”قردة غاندي الثلاثة” لسوبود غوبتا في الحي الثقافي /كتارا/، و”ماما” للفنانة لويز بورجوا في مركز قطر الوطني للمؤتمرات، و”الرحلة المعجزة” لداميان هيرست أمام /سدرة للطب/، و”مقعد” لسلوى روضة شقير في حديقة متحف الفن الإسلامي، و”الرجل الطائر” لضياء العزاوي في مطار حمد الدولي.
