WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging applications. However, there are several other clones or fake versions of the app available for download. In fact, many people have downloaded a software called Hey WhatsApp. However, you should know that these are fake apps and they look absolutely normal. However, if you use them, they can harm you in a number of ways, including stealing your personal details. Will Cathcart, head of WhatsApp at Meta Platforms, informed the same via his official Twitter account.
“Reminding @WhatsApp users that downloading fake or modified versions of WhatsApp is never a good idea. These apps sound innocuous, but they may bypass WhatsApp’s privacy and security guarantees. One thread:” tweeted Cathcart. In a series of tweets, he further informed that security teams had recently discovered hidden malware in apps – available outside of the Google Play Store – from developers called “HeyMods”, which included “Hey WhatsApp” Wait.
He informed the apps that promised new features but were scams to steal personal information stored on people’s phones. The WhatsApp chief also said the details were shared with Google and his team has worked with them to combat the malicious apps. “Google Play Protect on Android can now detect and disable previously downloaded malicious fake versions of WhatsApp. We thank Google for their help as they continue their efforts to prevent malicious apps from spreading on Android devices,” he tweeted.
He further added: “We will of course continue to work hard to detect and block these types of apps. We will also take enforcement action against HeyMods to deter future harm and will further explore the legal options for holding HeyMods and other apps like them. Responsible.”
He also said that mobile phone malware is a harmful threat that must be addressed, and the security community will continue to develop new ways to prevent its spread. Cathcart asks WhatsApp users if they see their friends or family members using different forms of WhatsApp, then encourages them to only use WhatsApp from trusted app stores or the official website http://WhatsApp.com/dl.

طالب تطبيق واتساب أصحاب هواتف أندرويد بحذف أحد التطبيقات فوراً بعد اكتشاف برامج ضارة يحملها تسرق معلومات حساسة.
وأرسل واتساب تحذيرات عاجلة لمستخدمي أندرويد بشأن تطبيق يسمى “هاي واتساب” (Hey WhatsApp)، بحسب موقع إكسبريس، حيث نبّه رئيس “واتساب” ويل كاثكارت المستخدمين عبر تغريدة بموقع تويتر، بشأن التطبيق المليء بالبرامج الضارة، محذراً من أن تطبيق “هاي واتساب” -الذي قد يبدو غير ضار في البداية- مصمم لسرقة البيانات الشخصية الحساسة المخزنة على هواتف أندرويد، وفق موقع الجزيرة نت.
وعثر على التطبيق خارج متجر “غوغل بلاي” (Google Play) ولكن لحسن الحظ يمكن لبرنامج “غوغل بلاي بروتيكت” (Google Play Protect) الآن اكتشاف وتعطيل هذه الإصدارات الضارة والمزيفة من واتساب.
ويأتي ذلك بعد تعاون غوغل وواتساب للعمل معا على إيقاف هذا البرنامج الخطير.

وفي حديثه عن التهديد، قال كاثكارت “ينبغي تذكير مستخدمي واتساب بأن تنزيل نسخة مزيفة أو معدلة من التطبيق ليست فكرة جيدة أبداً. وتبدو هذه التطبيقات غير ضارة ولكنها قد تعمل على الالتفاف حول شروط الخصوصية والأمان في واتساب”.
وتابع “اكتشف فريق الأمان لدينا مؤخراً برامج ضارة مخفية داخل التطبيقات -المعروضة خارج (غوغل بلاي)- من مطور يدعى (هاي مودز) والتي تضمنت (هاي واتساب) وغيرها. وتعد هذه التطبيقات بميزات جديدة ولكنها مجرد خدعة لسرقة المعلومات الشخصية المخزنة على هواتف الأشخاص”.
وأضاف “شاركنا ما وجدناه مع غوغل وعملنا معه لمكافحة التطبيقات الضارة. ويمكن لـ (غوغل بلاي بروتيكت) الآن اكتشاف وتعطيل الإصدارات الخبيثة المزيفة من واتساب التي حملت”، مؤكداً أن واتساب سيستمر في العمل على حظر هذه الأنواع من التطبيقات من أجهزة أندرويد.
