Scientists from Scotland Develop E-Skin That Feels Pain

Edinburgh: A team of researchers from the University of Glasgow in Scotland developed a new electronic skin that can mimic natural skin in terms of feeling pain and reacting to external stimuli.
The team explained that the new type of processing system draws inspiration from the human nervous system in the e-skin. To build an electronic skin capable of a computationally efficient, synapse-like response, the researchers printed a grid of 168 synaptic transistors made from zinc-oxide nanowires directly onto the surface of a flexible plastic surface. Then, they connected the synaptic transistor with the skin sensor present over the palm of a fully-articulated, human-shaped robot hand.
When the sensor is touched, it registers a change in its electrical resistance – a small change corresponds to a light touch, and harder touch creates a larger change in resistance. This input is designed to mimic the way sensory neurons work in the human body.
The reduction in sensory data also allows efficient use of the communication channels needed to send data to the brain, which then responds almost instantly and the body reacts appropriately.
The team believes that the creation of the new prototype of the e-skin is a major advance in the field of touch-sensitive robotics.

ويسجل المستشعر تغييرا في مقاومته الكهربائية عند لمسه، بلمسة خفيفة تتوافق مع تغيير بسيط ولمسة أصعب تؤدي إلى تغيير أكبر، وهو ما أشار الباحثون إلى أنه تصميم يحاكي الطريقة التي تعمل بها الخلايا العصبية الحسية البشرية.
كما يسمح هذا التقليل من البيانات الحسية بالاستخدام الفعال لقنوات الاتصال اللازمة لإرسال البيانات إلى الدماغ، والذي يستجيب بعد ذلك على الفور تقريبا حتى يتفاعل الجسم بشكل مناسب.
ويعتقد الفريق أن التوصل إلى النموذج الأولي الجديد للجلد الإلكتروني يعتبر تقدما كبيرا في مجال الروبوتات الحساسة للمس.
